Joy: Tales from the Joyseekers
Legend tells of a mysterious phenomenon, an elusive extension to the five senses, a sixth sense: Joy in its purest form.Concealed within a box, its origins unknown, its workings a mystery. For centuries people have tried to break open the box, though its lid remains bound, with a crank handle on its side that cannot be turned. Neither science nor brute force could unseal it.It now lies protected in a shrine created by the Joyseekers, the devout followers of this profound power. On every completed lunar cycle, the box calls out an enchanting jingle, the crank handle turns and unleashes its contents upon those who surround it. Pure joy.True believers make a pilgrimage to this site in search of its offering and to pay worship to its wonder.Though be warned, non-believers who attempt to benefit with sceptical souls will suffer a hellish curse should they not escape in time. All you have to do is believe.
The Total Joy of Travelling on Public Transport
Ah, the total joy of travelling on public transport. Do you love travelling with the delightfully varied public and their dubious electronic gadgets and often odious habits? Do you mind when the person behind you has a full blown argument on their mobile phone with the speaker positioned at extra loud, just so you are sure to get both argumentative sides of the mutual yelling? Is it OK for someone to apply their nail polish on a hot bus, thereby nearly choking the other passengers to death with the toxic fumes? Would special mobile confessionals built into modes of public transport ease the congestion of verbal diarrhoea from total strangers? Do you balk at getting up close and personal with the great unwashed? Are you the kind of person that finds the joys of travelling on public transport highly amusing, or would you rather just throw yourself under a bus?

DBA Version 3.0 updates the highly successful De Bellis Antiquitatis wargame rules for recreating ancient and medieval battles with miniature figures. De Bellis Renationis version 2.0
"De Bellis Renationis" is a set of wargames rules for Renaissance battles covering the period from 1494 AD to 1700 AD. DBR version 2.0 offers a combination of realism and excitement for this warfare using miniature figures in any scale from 2mm to 30mm. The creation of the experienced wargame designers Phil Barker and Richard Bodley Scott, DBR can be used to refight historical engagements or your own scenarios from small scale skirmishes to the largest battles of the period. With its command system using "player initiative points", DBR emphasizes the player's generalship rather than their ability to manipulate a set of rules. It allows players to fight actions from the whole period and across the whole world, from Japan to Europe and the Americas and from the Italian Wars to the Nine Years' War. This edition combines the 2002 edition of the rules with all three of the books of Army Lists and includes everything the wargemer needs to refight these battles in one single convenient volume.

Hoedowns, Reels, and Frolics

Phil Jamison

In Hoedowns, Reels, and Frolics, old-time musician and flatfoot dancer Philip Jamison journeys into the past and surveys the present to tell the story behind the square dances, step dances, reels, and other forms of dance practiced in southern Appalachia. These distinctive folk dances, Jamison argues, are not the unaltered jigs and reels brought by early British settlers, but hybrids that developed over time by adopting and incorporating elements from other popular forms. He traces the forms from their European, African American, and Native American roots to the modern day. On the way he explores the powerful influence of black culture, showing how practices such as calling dances as well as specific kinds of steps combined with white European forms to create distinctly "American" dances. From cakewalks to clogging, and from the Shoo-fly Swing to the Virginia Reel, Hoedowns, Reels, and Frolics reinterprets an essential aspect of Appalachian culture.

A practical handbook for accelerating innovation, both internally and externally, through engagement with innovation ecosystems. Leaders in large organizations face continuous pressure to innovate, and few possess all the internal resources needed to keep up with rapid advances in innovation, science, and technology. But looking beyond their own organizations, most face a bewildering landscape of external resources. In Accelerating Innovation, these leaders whether from the private, public, or nonprofit sectors will find a practical guide to this external landscape. Authors Phil Budden and Fiona Murray provide directions for navigating innovation ecosystems those hotspots worldwide where researchers, entrepreneurs, and investors congregate. While Silicon Valley and Greater Boston are popularly known for web-based digital technology and biotechnology, respectively, the logic of innovation ecosystems is not solely American so this guide takes in new locations and varied sectors such as Singapore (smart cities), Perth (mining), Cairo and Dubai (fintech), London and Lagos (fintech and media), Copenhagen (quantum computing), Rio de Janeiro (energy), Halifax (oceans), and Tel Aviv (cybersecurity). Drawing practical advice from a synthesis of works on tech, innovation, entrepreneurship, and strategic management, and from a decade of their own research and teaching at the intersection of these topics, Budden and Murray distill insights and interconnections from all these different worlds into a useful and globally applicable set of frameworks and models. Their approach provides leaders at every organizational level with a clear and workable roadmap for making the most of the unique resources of innovation ecosystems.

A Penny for the Governor, a Dollar for Uncle Sam

A Penny for the Governor, a Dollar for Uncle Sam

Phil Roberts

University of Washington Press
2002

In 1932, 60 percent of Washington State voters approved a state income tax. Within less than a year, the measure was struck down as unconstitutional by the state supreme court. Over half a century later, Washington remains one of only eight states without a state income tax. Yet Washington's conflicts and solutions were by no means unique.Through an examination of how Washingtonians reacted to federal tax policy, responded to national debates over tax issues, and opted for particular forms of taxation for themselves and their property, Phil Roberts elucidates the larger patterns of evolving tax policy in the United States. A Penny for the Governor, a Dollar for Uncle Sam explores the complex mix of factors underlying tax decisions and demonstrates how taxation politics influenced (and were influenced by) broader economic and cultural forces from the days of Lincoln to the New Deal. Tax systems are shaped by assumptions about economic development, social responsibility, and government influence, as well as cultural outlooks and political philosophies. This inquiry into the connections between politics and tax policy in the Pacific Northwest contributes to an understanding of the priorities that society holds about the place of government in relation to other institutions, the role government should play in the economic lives of its citizens, and t he relative influence of interest groups on the political process over time. A Penny for the Governor, a Dollar for Uncle Sam demonstrates the roles of governors, legislatures, courts, and average citizens in determining how income taxes were applied or resisted in the Northwest, and the important factors of class and geography in influencing taxation politics. The public debates on the subject are revealing of the role played by urban-rural conflicts in that most fundamental of political issues: taxes -- who decides, who pays, and how much.
