Deconstructing a Disciple's Doubt

Deconstructing a Disciple's Doubt

Deconstructing a Disciple's Doubt is one half philosophy of religion textbook; one half autobiography, and one half pop culture fish wrap for easy digestion. Perhaps the only comfort you can take from the previous statement is that this book for sure is not an advanced arithmetic (or even basic arithmetic) textbook. If that is what you are looking for go ask your local librarian to find it using the Dewey decimal system or type in "Books by guys who know something can't have 3 halves" into the Amazon search bar; this book is not for you. In fact, this book is NOT a lot of things. It is not a book for philosophers to continue in their circular self-congratulating co-misery of championing how much smarter they are than everyone else. Nor is it a book for those who treat reasonable questions of faith, existence, and the meaning of life like witchcraft. It is not for those who counter those who struggle with their beliefs with the platitude of "you just gotta believe brother " This book is not for the settled and the steady, the safe and the secure. It's not for the atheist who thinks people of faith are militant backwoods uneducated idiots who are fooled by fairytales nor is it for people of faith who just cannot fathom why and how someone might not believe in God. This book is for doubting Thomases and denying Peters; it's for atheists whose fondest memories are of their devout grandmothers reading them the old stories of the faith. This book is for the believer who does not understand for the life of them why certain things appear to be the way they are. This book is for the atheists who understand why their friend has faith and it is for the friend who understands how someone could be an atheist. This book is for the wonderers and wanderers. Those who not only doubt but are brave enough or plagued enough to doubt everything. This book is absolutely for those who doubt their doubt. This book is for those who ask the questions: why does existence exist at all? Is there a point and a purpose to the universe being the way it is? What is the true nature of truth? Why is there so much evil? Is there such a thing as evil if there is not purpose? Is there a difference truly between the world's religions that connects to ultimate reality?

It's a FDNY firefighter's first--and possibly last--week on the job. Charles Davids is a probationary firefighter working his first week out of the academy. For Charles, quietly battling his lack of confidence is a daily challenge as his new officers coach him on life as a New York City firefighter. The men love to tease and prank the new guy, but when it comes to drilling and training, they're clear that the job is no joke. As is said in the fire service: "let no man's ghost return to say my training let me down." Unfortunately for Charles, his first week is the same week that Alan Johnson, an unstable and soon-to-be-ex husband, gets kicked out and comes up with the idea to report fake fires at his wife's apartment every night. Alan laughs at the thought of her being awakened nightly by sirens and horns--if he can't sleep in their apartment, why the hell should she? But after days of crying wolf, Alan decides that fake fires aren't enough... Set on the hot summer streets of NYC and building to a fiery conclusion, No Man's Ghost is a vibrant and thrilling look at the people who keep a city safe--and the ones who want to watch it burn.

Hell-Bent: One Man's Crusade to Crush the Hawaiian Mob
World-class beaches, fragrant frangipani, swaying palms, and hula girls. Most folks think of Hawaii as a vacation destination. Mob-style executions, drug smuggling, and vicious gang warfare are seldom part of the postcard image. Yet, Hawaii was once home to not only Aloha spirit, but also a ruthless, homegrown mafia underworld. From 1960 to 1980, Hawaiian gangsters grew rich off a robust trade in drugs, gambling, and prostitution that followed in the wake of Hawaii's tourist boom. Thus, by 1980-the year Charles Marsland was elected Honolulu's top prosecutor-the honeymoon island paradise was also plagued by violence, corruption, and organized crime. The zeal that Marsland brought to his crusade against the Hawaiian underworld was relentless, self-destructive, and very personal. Five years earlier, Marsland's son had been gunned down. His efforts to bring his son's killers to justice-and indeed, eradicate the entire organized criminal element in Hawaii-make for an extraordinary tale that culminates with intense courtroom drama.Hawaii Five-O meets Wiseguy in author Jason Ryan's vigorously reported chronicle of brazen gangsters, brutal murders, and a father's quest for vengeance-all set against an unlikely backdrop of seductive tropical beauty.

Philosophical Biology in Aristotle's Parts of Animals

Philosophical Biology in Aristotle's Parts of Animals

Jason A. Tipton

Springer International Publishing AG

This book provides a detailed analysis of Aristotle’s Parts of Animals. It presents the wealth of information provided in the biological works of Aristotle and revisits the detailed natural history observations that inform, and in many ways penetrate, the philosophical argument. It raises the question of how easy it is to clearly distinguish between what some might describe as “merely” biological and the philosophical. It explores the notion and consequences of describing the activity in which Aristotle is engaged as philosophical biology. The book examines such questions as: do readers of Aristotle have in mind organisms like Ascidians or Holothurians when trying to understand Aristotle’s argument regarding plant-like animals? Do they need the phenomena in front of them to understand the terms of the philosophical argument in a richer way? The discussion of plant-like animals is important in Aristotle because of the question about the continuum between plant and animal life. Where does Aristotle draw the line? Plant-like animals bring this question into focus and demonstrate the indeterminacy of any potential solution to the division. This analysis of Parts of Animals shows that the study of the nature of the organic world was Aristotle’s way into such ontological problems as the relationship between matter and form, or form and function, or the heterogeneity of the many different kinds of being.?

Left-Behind Children’s Juvenile Delinquency and Substance Abuse in China
This book constructs the theoretical framework based on a range of prominent social theories to address how juvenile delinquency is socioeconomically constructed. Here the presentation of conceptual details is supported by Chinese literature that rationalises, problematises, and analyses how left-behind children are vulnerable to premature smoking, heavy drinking and drug abuse and. I critically review all the most recent publications to highlight the most updated socioeconomic structure of juvenile delinquency experienced by Chinese left-behind children. In addition, the author summarises and analyses all the most up-to-date policy recommendations and evaluations concerning the mitigation of left-behind children’s juvenile delinquency. The policymaking outputs help inform readers on how Chinese policymakers have specifically been endeavouring to intervene in left-behind children’s delinquent behaviours and what policy directions the corresponding policymakers are trending towards in the future.

In "An Aviator's Field Guide to Tailwheel Flying," author Jason Blair shares his experience in a variety of tailwheel-equipped aircraft. This book describes major phases of flight and considerations that transitioning or tailwheel pilots may find useful as they look to increase their proficiency. The discussion goes beyond the physical flying skills into other tailwheel aspects, such as operational differences in makes and models and ages of aircraft. Pilots of aircraft such as Cessna 180s, Cubs, Champs, Maules or other aircraft of similar type and size will find this content helpful. This book is the author's result of years of instructing and taking notes previously passed on to his own students, now compiled and shared with the broader aviation community.
