An ex-cop, Finn was left literally blinded by violence. The one thing he can still see is the body of his wife, Dani, and a crime scene that won't fade from his mind's eye. Now a professor, Finn never would have guessed that an isolated girls' prep school could be every bit as dangerous as city streets. Especially when he stumbles upon a local girl lying in a graveyard in the middle of a raging blizzard. Finn may live in a world of total darkness, but it's about to get a splash of red. The memories that torment him still have the power to kill, and a group of innocent students has been put in harm's way by a pair of vicious criminals stalking Finn for unknown reasons. Secrets are creeping from the shadows around him--the kind that even a man with perfect vision never sees until it's too late. They're about to become terrifyingly clear to Finn--and it all begins with the scent of blood. BONUS: This edition contains an excerpt from Tom Piccirilli's The Last Kind Words.

Believing in a higher power doesn't come easy for some people. I always believed, But I guess I never thought He would be guiding me in the way He has, and never in my wildest dreams did I think He would talk to me. This book was written to share with you just some of the ways that God is with us. The events are all true and written to the best of my recollection.

Gilbert Hernandez

Faber Faber

In his first book with Faber, Hernandez tells the untold stories of these American comics legends' youth, and portrays the reality of life in a large family in suburban 1960s California. Told largely from the point of view of middle child Huey - who stages Captain America plays and treasures his older brother's comic book collection almost as much as his approval - Marble Season deftly follows these boys as they navigate their cultural and neighborhood norms. Set against the golden age of the American dream and the silver age of comics, and awash with pop-culture references - TV shows, comic books, super-heroes and music -Marble Season subtly details how their innocent, joyfully creative play changes as they grow older and encounter name-calling, abusive bullies, and the value judgments of others. A coming-of-age story both comic and moving, it will have timeless resonance for children and adults alike.

Marseilles, 1891: as Arthur Rimbaud lies dying in hospital, his mind wanders fitfully - taking him back to Commune-era Paris, and the scandalous life he led with Verlaine. But, above all, he is transported to Harar, Abyssinia, where he ventured in 1880 to seek his fortune, having chucking in the disreputable game of writing poetry...Paul Strathern's second novel, published in 1972, won a Somerset Maugham Award both for its superb evocation of the colour, squalor and hurlyburly of Harar and for its inspired 'impersonation' of Rimbaud - restless, ragged self-overcomer, would-be explorer-imperialist, and genius poet repulsed by his past literary life. In a new preface to this edition Strathern discusses the mercurial personality of Rimbaud, his novel's bold shifts between first and third person, and his own travels in East Africa that informed the book.

Shoulder Season: A funny romance in the Lake Michigan Lodge series
There are two problems with owning a family business. The first is when there's no family. The second is when there's no business. My parents left big shoes for me to fill when they passed away. In fact, they left me everything. Except any clue as to how to run their Lake Michigan lodge, or reasons to keep trying in the face of utter ruin. I love Kerby Lodge. But running it? Not so much. As far as I'm concerned, the best season begins when everyone packs up their sunscreen and novelty t-shirts and heads for home. But this year, instead of blissful solitude, I'm snowed in with my grumpy final guest, and a blizzard of unpaid bills. My only consolation? A sexy sweet man I've never met.My parents created a well-oiled machine. But all machines and daughters fall apart sometime, don't they? Now my future hangs on what I make of the broken pieces...

A Season of Seasons: Discovering God within Every Storm
Here's the truth. Nobody really knows what it's like to walk in your shoes. People are quick to judge, while others believe they have all the answers. Our loved ones sometimes put pressure on us without even knowing it, and regardless of their good intentions, we still bleed on the inside. At times we suffer either because we didn't do right by others or because we didn't do right by our own selves. Maybe we didn't listen, or maybe we refused to learn. Life can really suck. But what I've learned is that even the most pain can eventually produce great joy. Even the tallest tree started out small but grew because of sunshine and rain. We should embrace both the happiness and the pain. Our dark times can be so uncomfortable and cold, and we all desire the sun to shine on our faces again. For me, the sun is Jesus Christ. He taught me through all my struggles that He is the one who can make anything beautiful. Jesus' love opened my own heart and taught me that even the worst parts of me could transform into the best parts of me. He helped me to keep going, even though I gave up many times. I once convinced myself that because of my bad decisions I was disqualified from being loved unconditionally. The journey of finally loving myself showed me how wrong I was. But I've learned that there is a set time for everything. My pain once felt like it was never going to end, but I kept growing and changing until it eventually did. It's been a long time coming, but everything happens for a reason. Just as night turns to day, and winter into spring, change creates a new season.

When she arrives in Willow Bay, Annie is enamored by the charming house, the invigorating sea breeze, and the town's rich seasonal traditions. Not to mention, her neighbors receive her with open arms--that is, all except the surly nephew of the homeowner, whose grand plans for the property are at odds with her residency. As Christmas approaches, tensions and tides rise in Willow Bay, and Annie's future seems less and less certain. But with a little can-do spirit and holiday magic, the most difficult time of her life will become...a season for second chances.

An American food writer moves his family of unlikely expats to the French countryside, where the locals upend everything he knows about cooking and winemaking, in this delightful memoir from a winner of the James Beard M.F.K. Fisher Distinguished Writing Award. Steve Hoffman is a perfectly comfortable middle-aged Minnesotan man who has always been desperately, pretentiously in love with France, more specifically with the idea of France. To follow that love, he and his family move, nearly at random, to a small, rural, scratchy-hot village in the south of the country, and he immediately thinks he's made a terrible mistake. Life here is not holding your cigarette chest-high while walking to the cafe and pulling off the trick of pretending to be French, it's getting into fights with your wife because you won't break character and introduce your very American family to the locals, who can smell you and your perfect city-French from a mile away. But through cooking what the local grocer tells him to cook, he feels more of this place. A neighbor leads him into the world of winemaking, where he learns not as a pedantic oenophile, but bodily, as a grape picker and winemaker's apprentice. Along the way, he lets go of the abstract ideas he'd held about France, discovering instead the beauty of a culture that is one with its landscape, and of becoming one with that culture. It's a story told in transporting writing, humor, and delicious detail.

The first novel in the thrilling series featuring Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett from #1 New York Times bestselling author C. J. Box. Joe Pickett is the new game warden in Twelve Sleep, Wyoming, a town where nearly everyone hunts and the game warden--especially one like Joe who won't take bribes or look the other way--is far from popular. When he finds a local hunting outfitter dead, splayed out on the woodpile behind his state-owned home, he takes it personally. Even after the discovery of two more bodies, and the resolution of the case by local police, Joe continues to investigate. As Joe digs deeper into the murders, he soon discovers that the outfitter brought more than death to his backdoor: he brought Joe an endangered species, thought to be extinct, which is now living in his woodpile. But if word of this rare species gets out, it will destroy any chance of InterWest, a multi-national natural gas company, building an oil pipeline through the mountains and forests of Twelve Sleep. The closer Joe comes to the truth behind the outfitter murders, the endangered species, and InterWest, the closer he comes to losing everything he holds dear.
