Blurbs for Always the Blue Tide TurningWith vivid sensory images and close attention to detail, Always the Blue Tide Turning draws the reader to many coasts: the high cliffs of loss, open stretches of childhood, and the literal ocean. Mary Shay McGuire writes poems deeply evocative of place. In many, nostalgia is lit by truth, and memory has the shadow of darker knowledge. Her endings often report these shadows with a quiet edge: "the liquor holding its own," "my mother bends taking our picture / as if everything is fine." The book carries us from Cape Cod to Pennsylvania and back again; through three parts, McGuire treats family fractures, death, losses, and love with lyrical thoughtfulness and reflection. ⸺Katherine Bode-Lang, author of The Reformation, winner of the American Poetry ReviewHonickman First Book PrizeAesthetic heir of Elizabeth Bishop, Mary Shay McGuire is also a painter. Her eye touches everything, feels deeply, and transforms each surface and anecdote with heart-rending restraint. Rich in the irrepressible objects and emotions of her Irish ancestry, near the sea in New England, and a life lived deliberately, her poems speak to our noisy days with wisdom, true beauty, and quiet art. Read this book more than once; let it teach you to see miracles.⸺Julia Spicher Kasdorf, author Poetry in AmericaMary Shay McGuire is an artist at recognizing the pattern in gardens, in a seaside cottage, and in behavior⸺the repetitions that create beauty and traditions as well as destroy lives. She takes on fearlessly the question of how to write about the past without nostalgia. In her poems, she works through the intricate relationships of mother, daughter, sister, and lover in language that is both precise and straightforward. Finishing this collection, I was surprised to look up and find myself somewhere other than in McGuire's landscape; it is so vividly drawn.⸺Charlotte Holmes, author of The Glass Labyrinth

The Dirty Knees of Prayer

The poems in THE DIRTY KNEES OF PRAYER are hot and dark as night rain. The new Honeywell fan blows whips of simmered air against Shay's glistening back. He suspects a dystopian future and apparently it has arrived. These poems shrug at death. A tide of smoke rises and hovers over the city. Shay's picture is taken for his collection of grief and apocalyptic love. These poems speak of sadness and self-fated things, how the heat blurs everything, the clouds send shrouds of water down. Here a thin gruel of hope is celebrated and dark elegies are showcased against the former truculence and lying promises of history, the placebo of mythology. The wry humour of mourning in an age of grief. Here is a picture of Shay against a green hedge. The poems do a rain dance. A five-step tango is executed with the ghost of Kubler-Ross. Songs of ruined breakfast are sung. Rags of pressed roses rise up from an old brittle Bible, its ochre pages ashen by exposure to the sudden light, become the dust on the roads of many summers.

This book is about the folk: the folk in folk dance, the folk in folklore, the folk in folk wisdom. When we see folk dance on the stage or in a tourist setting, which is the way in which many of us experience folk dance, the question arises are these the “real folk” performing their authentic dances? Or are they urban, well trained, carefully-rehearsed professional dancers who make their livelihood as representatives of a specific nation-state acting as the folk? Or something in between? This study delves more deeply into the folk, their origins, their identities in order to know the source of inspiration for ethno identity dances - dances prepared for the stage and the ballroom and for public performances from ballet, state folk dance ensembles and their amateur emulators, immigrant folk dance group performances, and tourist presentations. These dances, unlike modern dance, ballet, or most vernacular dances, always have strong ethnic references. It will also look at a gallery of choreographers and artistic directors across a wide spectrum of dance genres.
