This book is the first volume about Artillery Regiment 1 of the 1st Waffen-SS Division Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler (LAH). The artillery batteries of the LAH during the whole of World War II faced some of the hardest combat, and probably no other artillery unit was used as often at critical spots on all fronts. While it had only three batteries of light field howitzers during the French campaign, when the full artillery regiment was set up in August 1940, it later received heavier guns and 88mm flak. In April 1941, at Lake Kastoria in Macedonia during a tremendous artillery battle, the full regiment fired as a unit for the first time. During the battles on the Russian Front the regiment’s artillery equipment was constantly upgraded. One of the artillery batteries was equipped from 1943 with Wespe and Hummel self-propelled guns and later with Nebelwerfer rocket launchers that gave the regiment its tremendous firepower. Especially during the difficult defensive battles in the winter of 1943-1944 in the Ukraine, every artillery piece – whether a heavy field howitzer, or 15cm rocket launcher – was often used at such close range that it was fired with barrels in a horizontal position. The battery was later attached to the reconnaissance unit in the vanguard of the LAH and experienced the hardest battles while using “Panzermeyer tactics” that required rapid marches and lightning fast deployment into firing positions. Nearly 300 photos, most never before published, document the bitter battles of the LAH artillery regiment.

Para fines de agosto de 1939, la Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler se hab a agrupado frente a los pasos fronterizos polacos, en espera del resultado de la Operaci n Reichsf hrer (v ase: Reinhard Heydrich). El 1 de septiembre de 1939, cruzaron la frontera y se les asign Krzepice, su primer objetivo en tiempos de guerra. Esta aldea fue convertida en ruinas por sus atacantes. Luego de tomar esta aldea, la LSSAH fue testigo de la famosa carga de caballer a Pomorska, donde jinetes armados a la antigua cargaron sobre los tanques de Guderian. Cuando se inicia la Invasi n de Polonia en Septiembre de 1939, la Leibstandarte es organizada a nivel de regimiento de infanter a motorizada; para esa poca el uniforme de las Waffen SS es de color gris como el usado por el Ejercito alem n. La Leibstandarte se puede distinguir de otras unidades de las Waffen SS por una banda bordada con su nombre que es usada en la manga izquierda del uniforme. Inicialmente dice Leibstandarte SS Adolf HitlerDal final se usan las iniciales LSSAH o LAH. El 1 de Septiembre se inicia la Invasi n de Polonia con las formaciones de las Waffen SS bajo el control del Ej rcito. La Leibstandarte en particular es asignada al 10 Ej rcito al mando de von Reichenau dentro del Grupo de Ej rcitos Sur bajo el mando de von Rundstedt. El cuadro visual result surrealista, al ver caballos enfrent dose a una divisi n blindada Panzer, con sus jinetes uniformados y orlados con plumas como si fueran a un desfile. La carga de caballer a no era un muestra de banal hero smo polaco, sino que los polacos supusieron que las unidades blindadas que ten an al frente eran maquetas de cart n para enga ar al enemigo, lo cual result mortalmente falso. Despu s de que los alemanes se recuperaran de esta impresi n, que los dej anonadados, la LSSAH abri primero el fuego contra los jinetes, y el imprudente acto de valent a polaca termin en una espantosa carnicer a.
