What it is and what it isn't. This not a camera manual for the Leica M, nor is it a book that will teach you photography. Nevertheless, in Bertram Solcher's book you will learn a whole lot about your camera and how to use it, and about the art and craft of photography. This book contains a collection of illustrated essays that are meant to reveal the secrets of working with a rangefinder camera. To be more precise, with the best camera ever made. The book's ultimate goal is to ignite your passion for the kind of spontaneous, minimalist, and creative photography we admire in the works of Henri Cartier-Bresson, Joel Meyerowitz, and other great Leica photographers. All Leica M model cameras, both analog and digital, use rangefinder technology. Because of its design, working with a Leica M requires a more methodical style of photography where the photographer must slow down and exercise attention and purpose. Using these cameras is both challenging and rewarding. With a Leica M, you can mingle discretely within your environment to capture candid, exciting, insightful images.Bertram Solcher, a professional Leica M photographer for over 35 years, demonstrates how to use this unique camera in a practical and effective way.Solcher's enthusiasm, substantial experience, and technical expertise will help you learn the skills necessary for creating masterful photographs with any Leica M camera.
Early Beginnings of Anthroposophically Extended Medicine and Therapeutic Education in North America

How can healthcare providers strive to treat not just illness or disability, but the whole human being? Bertram von Zabern, MD, explores this question as he follows the historical thread of anthroposophically extended medicine in North America and weaves it into a tapestry illuminating the connections between the early pioneers of the field and the modern institutions, such as Weleda USA, which stand upon the foundations they laid.In a humble and conversational manner, von Zabern shares the stories of physicians who, inspired by the impulse given by Rudolf Steiner in his 1920 lecture series Introducing Anthroposophical Medicine, set out to create a regimen of care which recognizes the human being as a spiritual being, while still attending to physical health. Many of these young physicians, driven from their home countries by the rise of National Socialism, ended up founding their practices in North America. Those familiar with anthroposophical medicine will recognize the names of lauded doctors such as Sigfrid Knauer, Christoph Linder, Traute Page, and Franz Winkler. Early Beginnings also traces the trajectory of therapeutic or "curative" education in North America. Beginning with the efforts of Gladys and William Hahn at Lossing Manor in 1938, the author shows how, with the help of Dr. Karl K nig and Carlo Pietzner, the therapeutic education movement has blossomed into a nationwide phenomenon which continues to help those with developmental disabilities live in dignity and realize their potential.
From the Puddle to the Pond takes the reader on a profound journey spanning two countries-his native country, the Bahamas, and the United States of America. This deeply philosophical and spiritual journey is a candid look at everything from love and family to religion and relationships.
Not knowing what to say, he stood before the mysterious centuries-old captor, images of how they'd gotten themselves into this predicament running quickly through his mind. The sweltering, exhausting hike to see the blue hole, the thrill of seeing it for the first time, and the coolness of the water when they had rushed in, splashing and playing a game of hide and seek. Had it only been a few hours? It seemed like days had passed since they'd willfully ignored their parents' dire warnings in a search of summer adventure. A loud clattering shook him from his thoughts. The chief stood before him, and he contemplated his next words-knowing very well they could be his last.Set in beautiful Andros Island in the Bahamas, The Blue Hole is the story of four young boys who stole away from the confines of their close-knit and somewhat repressive out island community to go swimming-and the harrowing experience that awaited them in the dreaded blue hole.

"I need to imagine some end to life that transcends my tiny allotment of time and space," says the author of this wide-ranging, heartfelt, and intelligent book. "But I find it difficult to dream in a world filled with nightmarish violence. And yet I can't let go. I try to find my footing in an absurd world and search for signs of meaning and direction in the twisted turns of history that my generation has witnessed. I need to know how to dream in a world of diminishing expectations."

" ...]and cavernous-their serrated ridges piled on high in a confused jumble of sharp peak and castellated formation-the home of the markhoor and mountain sheep. Here a smooth, unbroken slab of rock, sloping at the well nigh precipitous angle of a high-pitched roof-there, at an easier slant, a great expanse of rock face, seamed and criss-crossed with chasms, like the crevasses on a glacier. No vegetation, either, to relieve the all pervading, depressing greyness, save where a ragged juniper or pistachio had found anchor along a ledge, or fringed the lip of some dark chasm aforesaid. No turn of the road brought any relief to the eye-any lifting of the unconscious oppression which lay upon the mind; ever the same hills, ...]."
A first-rate detective novel that explores media's manipulation of a gullible public. A cult leader announces a miracle will take place and she will rise to heaven. A medium prophesies the date, publicity gets to work, and all of America hums with anticipation. On the appointed day, she disappears and scientist Mortimer Hood, there to verify the miracle, must investigate how—and whether—the whole thing is a hoax, or if the priestess has been murdered. Originally published in 1936, this edition features a new introduction by poet and academic Gregory Betts (editor of The Wrong World: Bertram Brooker's Stories and Essays).

The book illustrates how biostatistics may numerically summarize human genetic epidemiology using R, and may be used successfully to solve problems in quantitative Genetic Epidemiology Biostatistics for Human Genetic Epidemiology provides statistical methodologies and R recipes for human genetic epidemiologic problems. It begins by introducing all the necessary probabilistic and statistical foundations, before moving on to topics related human genetic epidemiology, with R codes illustrations for various examples. This clear and concise book covers human genetic epidemiology, using R in data analysis, including multivariate data analysis. It examines probabilistic and statistical theories for modeling human genetic epidemiology – leading the readers through an effective epidemiologic model, from simple to advanced levels. Classical mathematical, probabilistic, and statistical theory are thoroughly discussed and presented. This book also presents R as a calculator and using R in data analysis. Additionally, it covers Advanced Human Genetic Data Concepts, the Study of Human Genetic Variation, Manhattan Plots, as well as the Procedures for Multiple Comparison. Numerous Worked Examples are provided for illustrations of concepts and real-life applications. Biostatistics for Human Genetic Epidemiology is an ideal reference for professionals and students in Medicine (particularly in Preventive Medicine and Public Health Medical Practices), as well as in Genetics, Epidemiology, and Biostatistics.
Since its publication in 1967, Bertram Huppert’s influential Endliche Gruppen I has remained a standard reference on group theory, with its clear, precise and complete exposition. The present volume makes this classic text available in English for the first time, updated with modern notation and notes. In addition to foundational material, the book contains the theory of permutation groups, linear groups, p-groups, nilpotent groups and solvable groups, as well as the transfer homomorphism and ordinary representation theory. All topics are fully developed and accessible to students with a basic knowledge of algebra. Its comprehensive coverage and inclusion of more advanced topics make this self-contained treatise an invaluable resource for graduate students and researchers.
The aim of the Expositions is to present new and important developments in pure and applied mathematics. Well established in the community over more than two decades, the series offers a large library of mathematical works, including several important classics. The volumes supply thorough and detailed expositions of the methods and ideas essential to the topics in question. In addition, they convey their relationships to other parts of mathematics. The series is addressed to advanced readers interested in a thorough study of the subject.
Was wäre die Welt ohne Verträge?
