The year 1939 was pivotal for Christopher Isherwood: he emigrated to the United States and his novel Goodbye to Berlin, which inspired the hit musical Cabaret, was feted by critics for its portrait of a city under the shadow of fascism. During the Second World War, Isherwood became a pacifist and studied in a Hindu monastery, provoking indignation back in Britain. His American novels, most notably A Single Man, both reflected his newfound spiritual interests and blazed a trail for the gay liberation movement. In this new biography, Jake Poller takes a holistic approach to Isherwood, exploring the development of his innovative autofiction and unpacking the Vedanta philosophy that informed his later work. He provides an incisive account of an iconic figure.
And Then It Was Now: The Autobiography of Christopher Guard
Since his highly-praised first appearance on TV at the age of twelve as a young David Copperfield in the BBC's 1966 serialisation of the Dickens novel, Christopher Guard has been an ever-present fixture on our screens. Highlights from his illustrious career include voicing Frodo in the 1978 animated version of The Lord of the Rings, playing Bellboy in Doctor Who, narrating twenty-five episodes of Jackanory and showing off his singing talents alongside Elizabeth Taylor in 1977's A Little Night Music. In addition to his work on-screen, Christopher is also a highly-respected artist and musician, having played at venues such as the Troubadour and Ronnie Scott's. An avid songwriter, his work has been featured in both television and film.In this candid autobiography, Christopher invites us into his unique world, sharing a smorgasbord of witty (and revelatory) memories of his adventures growing up in a family of actors and writers. Having known and worked with a veritable Who's Who of stars, his memoir boasts anecdotes featuring an impressive cast list, including Sir John Gielgud, Jenny Agutter, Hugh Grant, Mel Smith, Sir Elton John and many more.Perfect for fans of British TV, this is an absolute must-have addition to any bookshelf.

Christopher Hill was one of the leading historians of his generation. His work across more than fifteen books and dozens of articles fundamentally rewrote the way we understand the English Revolution and the development of the modern British state. While his career brought many of the trappings of establishment respectability - he was both a Fellow of the British Academy and the Master of Balliol College, Oxford - he was also seen as a threat to that very same establishment. Under surveillance by the security services for decades, in the 1980s Hill was publicly accused of having been a Soviet agent during the war. His was a Cold War life, as well as a scholarly one.In this brilliant work of biography, Michael Braddick charts Hill's development from his abandonment of the respectable, provincial Methodism of his youth, through his embrace of Marxism, to his membership and eventual break with the Communist Party, as well as his celebrated intellectual career. While many of his books - not least the thrilling work of historical resurrection The World Turned Upside Down and God's Englishman, his classic biography of Oliver Cromwell - are still widely read and admired, his intellectual reputation was damaged by sustained academic criticism in the politically charged atmosphere of the 1980s.Braddick's judicious biography not only situates Hill's life and work in their historical context but seeks to rescue Hill for a new generation of readers.

Christopher Lloyd (Christo) was one of the greatest English gardeners of the twentieth century, perhaps the finest plantsman of them all. His creation is the garden at Great Dixter in East Sussex, and it is a tribute to his vision and achievement that, after his death in 2006, the Heritage Lottery Fund made a grant of £4 million to help preserve it for the nation. This enjoyable and revealing book - the first biography of Christo - is also the story of Dixter from 1910 to 2006, a unique unbroken history of one English house and one English garden spanning a century. It was Christo's father, Nathaniel, who bought the medieval manor at Dixter and called in the fashionable Edwardian architect, Lutyens, to rebuild the house and lay out the garden. And it was his mother, Daisy, who made the first wild garden in the meadows there. Christo was born at Dixter in 1921. Apart from boarding school, war service and a period at horticultural college, he spent his whole life there, constantly re-planting and enriching the garden, while turning out landmark books and exhaustive journalism. Opinionated, argumentative and gloriously eccentric, he changed the face of English gardening through his passions for meadow gardening, dazzling colours and thorough husbandry. As the baby of a family of six - five boys and a girl - Christo was stifled by his adoring mother. Music-loving and sports-hating, he knew the Latin names of plants before he was eight. This fascinating book reveals what made Christo tick by examining his relationships with his generous but scheming mother, his like-minded friends (such as gardeners Anna Pavord and Beth Chatto) and his colleagues (including his head gardener, Fergus Garrett, a plantsman in Christo's own mould).

The first full-length biography of Christopher Okigbo, the most anthologized modern African poet, giving an extended narrative and rounded account of his life and times. Christopher Okigbo, once described as 'Africa's most lyrical poet of the twentieth century' was killed in September 1967, fighting for the independence of Biafra. The Sunday Times described his death as 'the single most important tragedy of the Nigerian civil war'. The manner in which Okigbo died typified the passionate, tortured and dramatic quality of his life. Widely considered along with Wole Soyinka and Chinua Achebe as part of modern Nigeria'sgreatest literary triumvirate, Okigbo's death promoted him to cult status among subsequent generations of African writers. This is the first full biography of the Nigerian poet. It places Okigbo within the turmoil of his generation and illustrates the aspects of his life that gave rise to such an intense poetry. How did his experience in the prestigious, English-type boarding school, Umuahia, where he was known more as a sportsman than a scholar, influence his life and later choices? Why was he sacked from the colonial service, and how did that lead him towards a search for private recovery, and ultimately towards poetry? What led him to take up arms? In other words, how didhis eclectic pursuits as high school teacher, university librarian, publisher, gun-runner and guerrilla fuel his poetic drive? DescriptionChristopher's Story II has been written after the success of the original paperback, published in the hope of raising awareness of (Kanner's) autism and severe challenging behaviour. It continues the Telfer family's story of love and determination to remain together as opposed to place their son in residential care. Julie Telfer wrote of the first book "I would truly love others to look beyond the disability and see Christopher for who he really is. I hope this book goes some way towards making this a reality."In Book II it becomes clear that her remarkable work and writing has changed the views of many but that the road towards fair and unprejudiced services and opportunities for all is far from over.Luckily it also becomes clear that she, her family, and her son, have the determination to continue walking this road.Book Extract"INTRODUCTIONThe autistic spectrum has held much fascination since Austrian-American psychiatrist and physician Leo Kanner presented his seminal paper back in 1943. A year later and unaware of his previous works, the Austrian paediatrician Hans Asperger's own landmark paper, describing autistic symptoms was also completed. Whilst the former studies concentrated on children at the lower end of the spectrum, the latter studies were completed on higher-functioning children. But together, the resulting papers form the basis of the modern study of autism and encompass many conditions such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Fragile X syndrome, Asperger syndrome and of course, Kanner autism. The spectrum itself is vast and whilst all affected individuals will have varying degrees of development and/or behaviour traits, which are characteristic of the condition, for individuals placed at the lowest end of the spectrum, the level of learning disabilities present will be more profound. In recent years there has been much emphasis placed on the syndrome known as Asperger, with little reference being made to those affected by Kanner autism. However, this book gives an insight into what it is actually like to live in family where one of its members is placed on the lowest end of the spectrum and continues our son's story as he enters into adulthood.

The first fully illustrated account of the life and work of English painter Christopher Wood (1901-30), this authoritative work, which includes over 150 images, provides extensive visual analysis of individual paintings, set designs and drawings created by Wood in both Britain and France so bringing fresh perspective to his unique artistic development on both sides of the Channel. Wood’s short career drew on a multitude of influences, all of which contributed to the development of his faux-naïve style. His oscillation between diverse artistic reference points is borne out in Katy Norris’ fascinating narrative that analyses Wood’s engagement with the Parisian avant-garde on the one hand, and the attraction of the simpler life he encountered in Cornwall, Cumbria and Brittany on the other. The emotional turmoil of his final years underlines the tensions between the two worlds that Wood inhabited and which he was ultimately was unable to reconcile. Filling a surprising gap in the published literature about this early 20th-century painter, Christopher Wood will appeal to readers who are yet to encounter Wood’s work, as well as collectors and enthusiasts.
