His exceptional good looks made him a matinee idol, and for 20 years, Franco Corelli was dubbed "Mr. Sold-Out." In 1958, just seven years after beginning his career, he was already the highest paid tenor in Italy. Following his Metropolitan Opera debut in 1961, he was celebrated as the greatest tenor in the world. His charismatic performances in such operas as "La Vestale" and "Fedora" (both in collaboration with Maria Callas), coupled with a formidable mystique, as well as a number of notorious and colourful incidents - including a real-life sword fight with Boris Christoff, the beating up of an audience member in Naples, and his alleged biting of Brigit Nilsson - created a worldwide mania for Corelli.Based on nearly a decade of research into theatre archives and interviews with the stars friends, family, and colleagues, this is the definitive biography of one of opera's greatest stars.

Kefalonia, 1941. Captain Corelli, an enigmatic young Italian officer, is posted to the idyllic Greek island as part of the Axis occupying forces. Shunned by the locals at first, he proves to be civilised, humorous – and a consummate musician. The captain is soon thrown together with Dr Iannis's strong-willed and beautiful daughter, Pelagia, who discovers all of the complexities of love, and how it can blossom in the most unexpected and profound way. Rona Munro's adaptation of Louis de Bernières' much-loved epic novel, Captain Corelli's Mandolin, premiered on tour of the UK in 2019, before transferring to London's West End.

S. Rachmaninoff. Variations on a Theme of Chopin. Op. 22. Variations on a Theme of Corelli. Op. 42
"Variations on a Theme of Chopin" were written in 1903 and to some extent represent a "workshop" composition, reflecting Rachmaninoff's searches in the field of piano texture. The cycle is based on the famous prelude in C minor, shortened by the composer to eight measures. "Variations on a Theme of Corelli" is one of Rachmaninoff's later works. Variations are dedicated to Fritz Kreisler, whom Rachmaninoff considered the best violinist of his time. The theme in the genre of folia, forming the cycle, is one of the earliest known themes of European music. Corelli used "Folia" in his Twelfth Violin Sonata, creating a cycle of variations on its basis. The edition is addressed to pianists - students of music colleges and universities, as well as concert performers.

This book, originally published in 1978, argues that there was no ‘turning-point’ in Bonaparte’s career, but rather a consistent pattern from beginning to end. As a commander Bonaparte’s forte was speed and aggressiveness. As a planner, however he was slapdash: his armies starved and went barefoot. The author argues that far from being a master of concentration of force on the battlefield, he was again and again caught with his army dispersed and only rescued from disaster by the last-minute arrival of reinforcements.

The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The eighteenth-century fascination with Greek and Roman antiquity followed the systematic excavation of the ruins at Pompeii and Herculaneum in southern Italy; and after 1750 a neoclassical style dominated all artistic fields. The titles here trace developments in mostly English-language works on painting, sculpture, architecture, music, theater, and other disciplines. Instructional works on musical instruments, catalogs of art objects, comic operas, and more are also included. ++++The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title.
