Tourism in the USA

Tourism in the USA

Routledge
2009
sidottu
The United States continues to provide opportunities for travel and tourism to domestic and international travellers. This is the first book to offer students a comprehensive overview of both tourism and travel in this region, paying specific attention to the disciplines of Geography, Tourism Studies and, more generally, Social Science.Tourism in the USA explains the evolution of tourism paying attention to the forces that shaped the product that exists today. The focus of the book includes the manner in which tourism has played out in various contexts; the role of federal, state, and local policy is also examined in terms of the effects it has had on the US travel industry and on destinations. The various elements of tourism demand and supply are discussed and the influence that transportation (especially Americans’ high personal mobility rates and love affair with the auto) has had on the sector highlighted. The economics of tourism are fleshed out before focusing more narrowly on both the urban and rural settings where tourism occurs. A look into the manner in which the spatial structure of cities is transformed through tourism is also offered. Additionally, a brief examination of future issues in American tourism is presented along with explanations concerning the ascendancy of tourism as an economic development tool in various areas. The book combines theory and practice as well as integrating a range of useful student orientated resources to aid understanding and spur further debate, which can be used for independent study or in class exercises. These include: ‘Closer Look’ case studies with reflective questions to help show theory in practice and encourage critical thinking about tourism developments in this region ‘Discussion Questions’ at the end of each chapter encourage stimulating debates ‘Further Reading’ sections direct the readers to related book and web resources so that they can learn more about the topics covered in each chapter.Written in an engaging style and supported with visual aids, this book will provide students globally with an in-depth and essential understanding of the complexities of tourism and travel in the USA.

As analytical chemistry and biology move closer together, biologists are performing increasingly sophisticated analytical techniques on cells. Chemists are also turning to cells as a relevant and important sample to study newly developed methods. Practical Cell Analysis provides techniques, hints, and time-saving tips explaining what may be “common knowledge” to one field but are often hidden or unknown to another. Within this practical guide: The procedures and protocols for cell separation, handling cells on a microscope and for using cells in microfluidic devices are presented.Elements of cell culture are taken and combined with the practical advice necessary to maintain a cell lab and to handle cells properly during an analysisThe main chapters deal with the fundamentals and applied aspects of each technique, with one complete chapter focusing on statistical considerations of analyzing cellsMany diagram-based protocols for some of the more common cell processes are includedChapter summaries and extensive tables are included so that key information can be looked up easily in the lab setting Much like a good manual or cookbook this book is a useful, practical guide and a handy reference for all students, researchers and practitioners involved in cellular analysis.

The Bogomils: A Study in Balkan Neo-Manichaeism traces the development of this little-understood heresy from its Middle Eastern roots. The Bogomils derived elements of their doctrine and practice from the Manichaeans and the Paulicians. By the reign of Alexius Comnenus, Bogomilism was rife within the Bulgarian and Byzantine empire and had taken hold even amongst influential families in Constantinople itself. Though they suffered persecution, decline and ultimate disappearance in their Balkan heartlands, the Bogomils were subsequently an influence upon more celebrated heresies in France and Italy. Dmitri Obolensky’s magisterial study of Balkan dualism remains the definitive work on Bogomilism.

Computer-aided drug design. The HCV family example.
Hepatitis C and Dengue viruses belong to the family of Flaviviridae. Viruses in this family are enveloped, have positive-sense RNA and are responsible for a variety of life threatening diseases. Hepatitis C virus is the major etiological agent of post-transfusion hepatitis worldwide. An estimated 3 % of the world's population is infected with HCV according to the World Health Organization. Infection with HCV will most regularly result in chronic hepatitis, which leads to liver cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma and liver failure. Dengue is currently the most important viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes afflicting humans the world context. Clinical symptoms range from mild fevers to a severe haemorrhagic disease. To date neither specific antiviral treatments exist nor are there any vaccines available for both infections. Thus there is an urgent need for new therapies.

Well forget it Corporations and institutions don't care that you've studied Plato or Russian literature, they want hard-driving, bottom line, results driven workers that can tow-the-line and conform. "Oh, The Places You Will See" provides the reader with a dose of reality that their liberal arts college adviser never mentioned during freshman orientation. This somewhat jaded parody will set the newly minted graduate on the proper course to a lifetime of rejection and disappointment, as it should be Open wide and take a big bite my friend, for the "world is your oyster", and this one is rancid

'I grew up in a small village in southern Greece. We had no toilet, no TV, and often no water or electricity. We were so isolated that we learnt about John Lennon's death in 1984 - four years after the incident. There were also very few people around to talk to, and no girls to date. So, I fell in love with my surroundings. They became my friends and confidants. I spoke to them, and they spoke to me. From our large balconies I watched the seasons come and go in the changing hues of the landscape. The warm southerly winds from Africa told me that summer was on its way. The freezing north wind reminded me that I was alive. The spectacular lightning strikes and thunderclaps made me tremble. It was during these years that I realised I was just another speck of dust in the endless, unfathomable universe; a tiny spark in the dark, striving to reconcile my fleeting presence with the eternal majesty around me. That's what this collection is essentially about. Haiku and Hiccups speaks to all of us. My hope is that every person will find themselves in at least one of these poems. That they will feel as if it has been written specifically for them.'

Allison's plane lands in New York on a wintry November afternoon in 1998, where she will begin a MA in philosophy at Columbia University. In New York Allison reconnects with an old friend, Nava, who introduces Allison to her brother Hooman. Allison strikes up a friendship with Hooman.Allison had begun to experience strange altered mental patterns that she feared could be an emerging madness, but with Hooman's help she eventually finds rhythms of convergence in her life within a mystical framework of ideas hidden within old Egyptian funerary texts, like the Book of Gates, and mystical texts written by Bah ʼu'll h, the prophet founder of the Bah ʼ Faith.Together, Allison and Hooman come to realize that the world they knew never existed to begin with; a new world, both disturbingly beautiful and sublime, rises up to meet them, and they will never be the same again, connected as they are through time and space.

Sappho in the Making

Sappho in the Making

Dimitrios Yatromanolakis

Harvard University, Center for Hellenic Studies
2008
nidottu
This book offers the first interdisciplinary and in-depth study of the cultural practices and ideological paradigms that conditioned the politics of the "reading" of Sappho's songs in the early and most pivotal stages of her reception. In this wide-ranging synthesis, Dimitrios Yatromanolakis investigates visual representations and ancient texts in their synchronic and diachronic multilayeredness to trace the discursive nexuses that defined the making of "Sappho" in the late archaic, classical, and early Hellenistic periods. Offering a systematic analysis of the contextual cues provided by vase paintings and focusing on the sociocultural institution of the symposion, this book explores the intricate modes of the assimilation of Sappho's poetry into diverse social, aesthetic, and performative contexts. Drawing on a number of disciplines, including archaeology, papyrology, and anthropology, Sappho in the Making articulates a new methodological Problematik on the reception of archaic Greek socioaesthetic cultures.
