Two persons-one man and one woman-are in an enclosed space and cannot be viewed below their shoulders; shots ring out; one person dies at the scene, the other person is charged with homicide. This case is designed to be tried twice: (1) once with the woman deceased-the man survives and is charged with homicide; (2) once with the man deceased-the woman survives and is charged with homicide. Mr. Diamond and Ms. Doyle had been in a relationship and living together for two months immediately prior to the shooting. Ms. Doyle was a waitress at the Truck Stop Cafe, and Mr. Diamond was a police officer and had just resigned from the Nita City Police Department. Mr. Diamond went to the Truck Stop Cafe to meet Ms. Doyle when she got off work at 6:00 a.m. He entered the cafe and sat in a booth. Ms. Doyle was sitting in a booth at the other side of the cafe talking with other waitresses. She did not speak to Mr. Diamond, and then at 6:30 a.m., Ms. Doyle got up and went to the entranceway of the cafe. Mr. Diamond followed her and they talked for a few minutes before two shots were fired. Was it murder, or an accident? This case file presents the same exact facts for both trials, with one exception: the gender of the defendant and the victim. Optimal use of this file is to try once as State v. Diamond and once as State v. Doyle. There are four witnesses for the State and three for the Defense. Exhibits include witness statements, police reports, medical reports, and gun diagrams.
To Raise the Fallen: A Selection of the War Letters, Prayers, and Spiritual Writings of Fr. Willie Doyle
Irish military chaplain Fr. Willie Doyle, S.J., died in action during the Battle of Passchendaele on August 16, 1917, having been hit by a German shell while rushing to the aid of wounded soldiers trapped in No Man's Land. In To Raise the Fallen, Patrick Kenny introduces readers to this remarkable man, whose faith, heroic courage and generosity in the trenches of World War I continues to inspire Christians and non-Christians alike. To Raise the Fallen incudes a selection of Willie Doyle's rich and vivid letters from the front, along with diary entries, prayers, spiritual writings and extracts from the pamphlets that made him a publishing sensation across Europe in the early years of the twentieth century. Fr. Doyle's compassion, cheerfulness and humility, alongside his great valor in wartime, are a testament to his commitment to Christ. His final act of bravery epitomizes Christ's words that there "is no greater love than to lay down one's life for one's friends".Those who knew Fr. Doyle testified to his heroic virtue. They witnessed his fearlessness in the face of enemy fire as he rescued the wounded, anointed the dying, and buried the dead. His letters home reveal both his deep faith and his great humor, even in the face of unspeakable horrors. His daily conquest of himself in little things, over many years prepared him for his selfless service on the battlefield.

The cricket on the hearth: a fairy tale of home. By: Charles Dickens: and By: Maclise, Daniel, 1806-1870; Doyle, Richard, 1824-1883; Stanfield, C
Sir Edwin Henry Landseer RA (7 March 1802 - 1 October 1873) was an English painter and sculptor, well known for his paintings of animals-particularly horses, dogs and stags. However, his best known works are the lion sculptures in Trafalgar Square...... John Leech (29 August 1817 - 29 October 1864 in London) was an English caricaturist and illustrator. 1] He is best known for his work for Punch, a humorous magazine for a broad middle-class audience, combining verbal and graphic political satire with light social comedy. Leech catered to contemporary prejudices, such as anti-Americanism and antisemitism and supported acceptable social reforms. Leech's critical yet humorous cartoons on the Crimean War help shape public attitudes toward heroism, warfare, and Britons role in the world.......... Clarkson Frederick Stanfield RA (3 December 1793 - 18 May 1867) was a prominent English marine painter; he is often though inaccurately called William Clarkson Stanfield....... Richard "Dickie" Doyle (18 September 1824 - 10 December 1883)was a notable illustrator of the Victorian era. His work frequently appeared, amongst other places, in Punch magazine; he drew the cover of the first issue, and designed the magazine's masthead, a design that was used for over a century.............. Daniel Maclise RA (25 January 1806 - 25 April 1870) was an Irish history, literary and portrait painter, and illustrator, who worked for most of his life in London, England........ Charles John Huffam Dickens ( 7 February 1812 - 9 June 1870) was an English writer and social critic. He created some of the world's best-known fictional characters and is regarded by many as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. His works enjoyed unprecedented popularity during his lifetime, and by the 20th century critics and scholars had recognised him as a literary genius. His novels and short stories enjoy lasting popularity. Born in Portsmouth, Dickens left school to work in a factory when his father was incarcerated in a debtors' prison. Despite his lack of formal education, he edited a weekly journal for 20 years, wrote 15 novels, five novellas, hundreds of short stories and non-fiction articles, lectured and performed extensively, was an indefatigable letter writer, and campaigned vigorously for children's rights, education, and other social reforms. Dickens's literary success began with the 1836 serial publication of The Pickwick Papers. Within a few years he had become an international literary celebrity, famous for his humour, satire, and keen observation of character and society. His novels, most published in monthly or weekly installments, pioneered the serial publication of narrative fiction, which became the dominant Victorian mode for novel publication. The instalment format allowed Dickens to evaluate his audience's reaction, and he often modified his plot and character development based on such feedback. For example, when his wife's chiropodist expressed distress at the way Miss Mowcher in David Copperfield seemed to reflect her disabilities, Dickens improved the character with positive features. His plots were carefully constructed, and he often wove elements from topical events into his narratives. Masses of the illiterate poor chipped in ha'pennies to have each new monthly episode read to them, opening up and inspiring a new class of readers.Dickens was regarded as the literary colossus of his age. ...

Throughout literary history, the figure of the mother has been the subject of much critical attention. While traditional studies have focused on women writers and the maternal, Laura Anne Doyle pairs literary movements not often considered together--Modernism and the Harlem Renaissance--to show how the figure of the mother haunts modern novels from their very opening pages. Figures such as the slave mother in the Prologue to Invisible Man, Lena Grove in Light in August, and Sethe in Beloved, Doyle shows, form a tradition that marks the tip of a cultural iceberg, the peaking expression of a cultural matrix at once racial and sexual, literary and scientific. Exploding the assumed persona of the mother, Doyle formulates a theory of "racial patriarchy" in which the circumspection of reproduction within racial borders engenders what she calls the "race mother" figure in literary and cultural narratives. Making use of heterogeneous materials, ranging from kinship studies to histories of slavery, Bordering on the Body traces the symbolic operations of the "race mother" from Romanticism and nineteenth-century biology to eugenics and twentieth-century fiction. This newest title in the Race and American Culture series offers a breakthrough in race and gender theory, a racial reconfiguration of modernism, and a reinterpretation of discourses of nature since Romanticism.

This volume is designed as a basic text for upper level and graduate courses in contemporary sociological theory. Most sociology programs require their majors to take at least one course in sociological theory, sometimes two. A typical breakdown is between classical and contemporary theory. Theory is perhaps one of the bro- est areas of sociological inquiry and serves as a foundation or framework for more specialized study in specific substantive areas of the field. In addition, the study of sociological theory can readily be related to various aspects of other social science disciplines as well. From the very beginning sociology has been characterized by alternative theoretical perspectives. Classical theory includes the European founding figures of the dis- pline whose works were produced during the later half of the nineteenth century and the first couple of decades of the twentieth century plus early American th- rists. For most of the second half of the twentieth century, a fairly high consensus has developed among American sociologists regarding these major founders, p- ticularly with regard to the works of Durkheim and Weber in analyzing the overall society and of Simmel in analyzing social interaction processes. Since the late 1960s and early 1970s the influence of Marx has also been recognized. Recent decades have also witnessed an increased emphasis on the important contributions of several pioneering feminist perspectives in the early years of sociology.
