The Rocket Mass Heater Builder's Guide

The Rocket Mass Heater Builder's Guide

Erica Wisner; Ernie Wisner

New Society Publishers
2016
pokkari
Heating with wood is often considered a natural and economical alternative to electricity or fossil fuels. However, even with a fairly new and efficient woodstove, many cords of wood are required for burning over the course of a single winter, and incomplete combustion can contribute to poor air quality. A rocket mass heater is an earthen masonry heating system which provides clean, safe, and efficient warmth for your home, all while using 70 to 90 percent less fuel than a traditional woodstove. These unique and beautiful installations provide luxurious comfort year round. In cold weather a few hours of clean, hot burning can provide twenty or more hours of steady warmth, while the unit's large thermal mass acts as a heat sink, cooling your home on sizzling summer days. Packed with hard-to-find information, The Rocket Mass Heater Builder's Guide includes: Comprehensive design, construction, and installation instructions combined with detailed maintenance and troubleshooting advice Brick-by-brick layouts, diagrams, and architectural plans augmented with detailed parts drawings and photographs for clarity Relevant and up-to-date code information and standards to help you navigate the approval process with local building departments Earthen masonry heating systems are well-suited for natural and conventional builders alike. A super-efficient, wood-burning, rocket mass heater can help you dramatically reduce your energy costs while enhancing the beauty, value, and comfort of your home. Erica Wisner and Ernie Wisner have built over seven hundred super-efficient, clean-burning masonry stoves. They are dedicated to the search for sustainable solutions and the hands-on teaching of creative, ecological, and practical skills.
Adventure of Great Dimension: The Launching of the Chicago Assyrian Dictionary Transactions, American Philosophical Society (Vol. 92, Part 3)
Babylonian & Assyrian early civilizations left a vast corpus of records & scribes preserved through the medium of cuneiform writing on clay tablets. Reiner looks back on the last half-century & more of work on the Chicago Assyrian Dictionary (CAD) project at the Oriental Inst. of Chicago, focusing on the reformulation of the task that took place during her years of participation in the 1950s & 1960s. This included intellectual clashes between scholars Thorkild Jacobsen & Leo Oppenheim. Benno Landsberger supported Oppenheim & helped to move the project forward. Oriental Inst. dir. Robert McC. Adams concurs in the course that has made the CAD one of the great humanistic achievements of our time.
Remembering Occupied Warsaw

Remembering Occupied Warsaw

Erica L. Tucker

Northern Illinois University Press
2011
pokkari
Offering a rare glimpse into the lives of those who lived through the German occupation of Poland's capital, this important ethnography explores how elderly residents of Warsaw recollect, narrate, and commemorate their experiences, thus showing how the cultural legacies of the occupation reveal themselves in contemporary Polish society. The individuals who are the focus of this study, all long-time residents of the Warsaw neighborhood Zoliborz, responded to the daily deprivations and brutality of the German occupation by joining branches of the Polish underground, ultimately participating in the Warsaw Uprising of 1944—during which their neighborhood was burned, but not destroyed—as soldiers, couriers, and medics. Using life histories and ethnographic fieldwork, Tucker examines the ways that her informants recovered from the rupture of war, arguing that this process was connected to efforts to rebuild the city itself. Remembering Occupied Warsaw makes an important contribution to studies of collective memory. A moving work of oral history, this book will appeal to scholars and students of anthropology, sociology, and East European studies, as well as general readers interested in Polish history.

Sargent's Daughters

One of the most celebrated painters of his day, John Singer Sargent defines for many the style, optimism and opulence of turn-of-the-century America. Among his renowned portraits, "The Daughters of Edward Darley Boit" stands alongside "Madame X" and "Lady Agnew of Lochnaw" as one of Sargent's immortal images. This painting depicts four young sisters in the spacious foyer of the family's Paris apartment, strangely dispersed across the murky tones and depths of the square canvas, as though unrelated to one another, unsettled and unsettling to the eye. "The Daughters" both affirms and defies convention, flouting the boundaries between portrait and genre scene, formal composition and quick sketch or snapshot. Unveiled at the Paris Salon of 1883, it predated by just two years the scandal of "Madame X" and was itself characterized by one critic as "four corners and a void"; but Henry James came closer to the mark when he described the painter as a "knock-down insolence of talent," for few of Sargent's works embody the epithet as well as "The Daughters of Edward Darley Boit." Drawing on numerous unpublished archival documents, scholar Erica E. Hirshler excavates all facets of this iconic canvas, discussing not only its significance as a work of art but also the figures and events involved in its making, its importance for Sargent's career, its place in the tradition of artistic patronage and the myriad factors that have contributed to its lasting popularity and relevance. The result is an aesthetic, philosophical and personal tour de force that will change the way you look at Sargent's work, and that both illuminates an iconic painting and reaffirms its pungent magnetism.

John Singer Sargent’s approach to watercolour was unconventional. Disregarding late-nineteenth-century aesthetic standards that called for carefully delineated and composed landscapes filled with transparent washes, his confidently bold, dense strokes and loosely defined forms startled critics and fellow practitioners alike. One reviewer in England, where Sargent spent much of his adult life, called his work ‘swagger watercolours’. For Sargent, however, the watercolours were not so much about swagger as about a new way of thinking. In watercolour as opposed to oils his vision became more personal and his works more interconnected. Presenting nearly 100 works of art, this book is the first major publication of Sargent’s watercolours in twenty years. Each chapter highlights a different subject or theme that attracted the artist’s attention during his travels through Europe and the Middle East: sunlight on stone, figures reclining on grass, patterns of light and shadow. Insightful essays by the world’s leading experts enhance this book and introduce readers to the full sweep of Sargent’s accomplishments in the medium, in works that delight the eye as well as challenge our understanding of this prodigiously gifted artist.

In this vivid account of one of Boston’s best-loved paintings, leading American art specialist Erica E. Hirshler illuminates the context of Childe Hassam’s 1880s city scene. With its rosy rust tones, nurturing woman, and quiet expanse of snow-laden park, today At Dusk (Boston Common at Twilight) seems to encourage reflection, yet Hirshler reveals the ways in which it heralded the emerging modern city, from subtleties about women’s place in the urban landscape to the uproarious clang of the streetcars that would have been heard on the busiest block in Boston. Enriched with related paintings and archival illustrations, this evocative volume explores the countered conventions and bulldozed buildings behind the canvas’s creation. Carefully researched and elegantly presented, the latest addition to the MFA Spotlight series will delight Hassam fans and history buffs alike.

A paperback edition of the book described by the New York Times Book Review as `thoroughly absorbing’. Henry James minced no words in crediting John Singer Sargent with a `knock-down insolence of talent.’ Among the painter’s many renowned works, few deserve the phrase as much as The Daughters of Edward Darley Boit, which stands alongside Madame X and Lady Agnew of Lochnaw as one of Sargent’s greatest images. The painting, depicting four young sisters in the family apartment (first exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1883, it predated by just one year the scandal of Madame X), both explores and defies convention, crossing the boundaries between portrait and genre scene, formal composition and casual snapshot. At its unveiling, one prominent critic rushed to praise Sargent’s stunning originality, while another dismissed the canvas as `four corners and a void.’ Using numerous unpublished archival documents, Erica E. Hirshler explores this iconic canvas from a variety of angles, discussing its innovative significance as a work of art, the people involved in its making and what became of them, its importance to Sargent’s career, its place in the tradition of artistic patronage, and its changing meanings and lasting popularity. Sargent’s Daughters is an evocative, multifaceted book that will transform the way you look at Sargent’s work, simultaneously illuminating a much beloved painting and reaffirming its mystery

Hyman Bloom: Matters of Life and Death

Accompanies the exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, on this key member of the Boston Expressionist school Hyman Bloom (1913–2009) was a key member of the Boston Expressionist school and a contemporary of Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock and Arshile Gorky. This new study focuses on Bloom’s paintings and drawings of human corpses, anatomical studies and archaeological excavations from the 1940s and 1950s. He often returned to these subjects throughout his career, using thickly applied paint in rich colours as he aspired to present both the physical and the spiritual on canvas. Insightful curatorial essays accompanied by beautiful full-colour reproductions explore this difficult but compelling work, considering themes such as the life, death and rebirth of Bloom’s artistic reputation; the growing divide between figuration and abstraction at this defining moment of American art; earlier artistic traditions of representing mortality; the relationship between these works and Bloom’s Judaism, interest in eastern religions, and belief in reincarnation; and the artist’s desire to find beauty and meaning within death and decay. In these drawings and paintings, as Bloom himself asserted, ‘the paradox of the harrowing and the beautiful [can] be brought into unity.’

When Erica Reid's son almost died of a bacterial infection at only three years old, the painful experience drove her to seek out the knowledge to make her home a healthier environment for her family. Over time, this passion came to encompass every aspect of conscience parenting. From health and nutrition, to discipline and spirituality, Reid schooled herself in every area that is part of creating a totally healthy environment in which a family will flourish. Reid will draw upon her own experiences in creating a toxin-free, green lifestyle for her family, as well as encouraging the development of creative, spiritually balanced children. The objective of THE THRIVING CHILD is to show and explain to parents how they can put their family on a healthy path, both physically and emotionally, in a world that seems to push in the other direction. It will include narrative of the author's experience but balanced by tips and advice. While Reid will draw upon lessons she has learned and concepts she has developed from her own experience, THE THRIVING CHILD is not a memoir but instead prescriptive work, including in-depth perspectives from experts in various fields as well as insight from other celebrity mothers.

I'm Old So Why Aren't I Wise?: Snarky Senior in the Sunshine State
"...sharp-witted, well written, and refreshingly outspoken..." -Abigail Thomas, NY Times bestselling author of Three Dog Life and What Comes Next and How to Like It. Did you ever swear you'd never end up like your parents but you did anyway? And not only that-you discovered you actually liked it? This is the mostly true story of how a cool, hip native New Yorker married the wrong man, moved to upstate New York, went through a nasty divorce, got stuck in artsy Woodstock, a place she should have loved but actually hated and in her seventies wound up reinventing her life in a place she should have hated but wound up loving-the cultural and architectural wasteland of South Florida-despite her determination never to suffer that fate. Erica proves it is possible to survive in Florida even if you don't play canasta, or bridge, or mah-johng or even Scrabble. She is now firmly embedded in enemy territory-Century Village-which is best described by a quote from Pogo, "we have met the enemy and he is us." Erica's insightful and witty essays demonstrate that you can be a rebel, with or without a cause, no matter how old you are. "In a punk yet kind approach to the always complicated issue of aging, Manfred gets to a lot of the knotty problems of growing old when you still feel young. Heartfelt and problematic in the best way." -Julie Powell, NY Times bestselling author, Julie and Julia "Erica Manfred's new book is sharp-witted, well written, and refreshingly outspoken. Manfred is a deliciously good writer who takes no prisoners and speaks her mind. It is a lot of fun to read this." -Abigail Thomas, NY Times bestselling author, Three Dog Life and What Comes Next and How to Like it "Erica draws us into her Florida adventures with such keen attention to the details of aging in the sunlight that we can take her lessons anywhere we happen to be. . Her irreverent sense of humor carries the day " -Linda Gravenson editor: In the fullness of Time, 32 Women on Life after 50 "Erica Manfred is a snarky senior banished to Florida from hippie dippy small town Woodstock. Long winters and bad memories push her to burn bridges. She tosses things into her car and drives south in a snowstorm to restart her life in sunny Florida. Erica is a very funny writer, tussling with pool police and fighting parking space wars. Ironically, she lands up living in the same retirement complex as her deceased parents My favorite essays discussed a red diaper baby returning to her roots and surviving among Trump voters. If you are planning a move to Florida, this book a must read." -Kate Walter, author Looking for a Kiss: A Chronicle of Downtown Heartbreak and Healing
