Carl-Magnus Fogelholm var nyfiken på författaren och aktivisten Konni Zilliacus, som levde åren 1855 - 1924. Berättelsen om Konni Zilliacus löper samtidigt med de viktigaste politiska händelserna i Finland och i Ryssland med största fokus på den första ofärdsperioden 1899 - 1905. Konni Zilliacus och aktivisternas arbete för att lösgöra Finland från Ryssland kunde idag, 100 år efter landets självständighet, vara mycket mera känt. Huvudpersonen Konni Zilliacus eller KZ som han ibland signerade sina artiklar med, var författarens mors farfar.Konni Zilliacus' renomme inom den egna släkten har ända till våra dagar varit förknippad med varierande omdömen. Hans rykte är inte fläckfritt. Man har till och med använt uttrycket persona non grata om honom inom släkten. Den beteckningen härrör väl främst från att han år 1889 plötsligt lämnade sin familj, hustru och barn, och började ett nytt liv i Amerika. Minnet av Konni Zilliacus är också förknippat med välmotiverad respekt hos många. Den politiska roll han kom att spela under vårt lands frigörelsekamp är allmänt erkänd bland historiker. Med en visionär blick förutsåg han tsardömets fall långt tidigare än de flesta i hans omgivning. Konni Zilliacus var i första hand en politisk realist som tidigt insåg att Finland inte kommer att kunna utvecklas i en fri västerländsk demokratisk ordning så länge landet styrs av en mer eller mindre despotisk rysk regering med en svag kejsare. Hans andra anlag härrör från hans författarskap med historiska analyser. Han utmärkte sig också som journalist i olika tidskrifter.Mest känd blev Konni Zilliacus för roll som aktivistledare under den första ofärdstiden 1899 - 1905. Under den här tiden då han mestadels var landsförvisad, utgav han tidskriften Fria Ord, organiserade revolutionskonferenser, grundade Finska aktiva motståndspartiet och inledde samarbete med den japanska underrättelsetjänsten. Hans mest uppseendeväckande politiska aktion, den så kallade Graftonaffären, var då han försökte smuggla stora mängder vapen till ryska arbetare i S:t Petersburg i avsikten att starta den första ryska revolutionen hösten 1905.Man kan inte förstå Konni Zilliacus karriär eller honom som människa, utan att föreställa sig det äventyrliga liv han levde utomlands under åren 1889 - 1898. Åren ändrade hans tillvaro från ung lovande jurist, familjefar, godsägare och medlem i Helsingfors societeten till den världsresenär, äventyrare, skriftställare, opportunist och politiskt aktiva nationalist. Den dagliga kampen för levebrödet, bland annat som ”chief of camp” i Latinamerika och journalist i Chicago och en drygt tvåårig vistelse i Japan, gav honom en sällsynt internationell överblick.Folkbeväpningsförbundet Voima, Konnis skötebarn, som aktivisterna grundade hösten 1905, gav modell åt studenter och ungdomar från landsorten att år 1914 bilda den motståndsrörelse riktad mot Ryssland som följande år omformades till jägarrörelsen. Tre år senare blev den genom de vita skyddskårerna kärnan i Finlands arme. Seeing Depression Through a Cultural Lens, the collaborative work of a clinical neuroscientist and a scholar of comparative culture, examines the effects of cultural identity on the epidemiology, phenomenology, and narratives of depression, the bipolar spectrum, and suicide. Culture is associated with emotional communication style, 'idioms of distress,' the conception of depression and of bipolar disorders, and how people with mood disorders might be stigmatized. It is linked to structural factors--environmental, social, and economic circumstances--that create or mitigate the risk of depression, sometimes precipitate episodes of illness, and facilitate or impede treatment. Culture shapes depressed people's willingness to disclose or acknowledge their condition and to seek care, their relationships with clinicians, and their acceptance or rejection of specific treatments. Cultural context is essential to understanding suicide. It underlies people's motives for suicide, factors that promote or prevent suicide, the social acceptability of death by suicide, and availability of lethal means of self-harm. Cultural identity is always intersectional, comprising elements related to race and ethnicity; gender; age, generation, and life stage; education; social class; occupation; migrant or minority status; region of residence; and religious belief and practice. This book explores the implications of each of these dimensions using salient concepts from the social sciences, memorable narratives from literature, film, and the clinic, and quantitative findings from epidemiology and psychometrics. It offers readers a framework for culturally aware assessment and management of depression, bipolarity, and suicidal risk in diverse individuals and populations.

After centuries of virtual isolation, during which time international sea travel was forbidden outside of Japan's immediate fishing shores, Japanese shogunal authorities in 1862 made the unprecedented decision to launch an official delegation to China by sea. Concerned by the fast-changing global environment, they had witnessed the ever-increasing number of incursions into Asia by European powers - not the least of which was Commodore Perry's arrival in Japan in 1853-54 and the forced opening of a handful of Japanese ports at the end of the decade. Japanese from varied domains, as well as shogunal officials, Nagasaki merchants, and an assortment of deck hands, made the voyage along with a British crew, spending a total of ten weeks observing and interacting with the Chinese and with a handful of Westerners. Roughly a dozen Japanese narratives of the voyage were produced at the time, recounting personal impressions and experiences in Shanghai. The Japanese emissaries had the distinct advantage of being able to communicate with their Chinese hosts by means of the "brush conversation" (written exchanges in literary Chinese). For their part, the Chinese authorities also created a paper trail of reports and memorials concerning the Japanese visitors, which worked its way up and down the bureaucratic chain of command. This was the first official meeting of Chinese and Japanese in several centuries. Although the Chinese authorities agreed to few of the Japanese requests for trade relations and a consulate, nine years later China and Japan would sign the first bilateral treaty of amity in their history, a completely equal treaty. East Asia - and the diplomatic and trade relations between the region's two major players in the modern era - would never be the same.
