The Tiddlers series features fun stories with a word count of fewer than 50 words for children who are just starting to read. A word list at the start of the book allows you to check the child's ability to decode and understand each word before reading, providing a fully supported first reading experience. And a puzzle at the end of the story encourages rereading for pleasure.

This is the wartime diary of 492499 Private Fred Fish, of 60th Division 2/13th London Regiment (2nd Kensingtons) and 179 Light Trench Mortar Battery. Joining the war in June 1916 at the age of 19, Fred served in three theatres of World War I - in France on the Western Front, in Greece on the Macedonian Front, and in Palestine in the Battle of Jerusalem - before being shipped home from Egypt with malaria in October 1918. Fred's daily observations, illustrated with contemporary photographs (including many of Fred) and contextualised with excerpts from the Battalion's official War Diaries, offer a window onto the experiences of an ordinary soldier in the Great War: back-breaking work punctuated with moments of poignancy, comedy and terror.

To his horror, peculiar and dramatic changes then begin to occur to his body and the dreadful thought that he may be turning into a chicken starts to become real. When Jim starts teasing him and convincing him that he really is turning into a chicken, Fred becomes even more troubled. These troubles are greatly increased when his mother summons the doctor to examine him. Fred, however, is a determined and resourceful little boy who endeavours to stay one step ahead. But will his problems disappear, or will his worst fears be realised?
