While volumes have been written about the Protestant missionary movement in China, scant attention has been paid to the role of nursing and nurses in these missions. Set against a backdrop of war and revolution, Healing Henan brings sixty years of missionary nursing out of the shadows by examining how Canadian nurses shaped health care in the province of Henan and how China, in turn, influenced the nature of missionary nursing. From the time Presbyterian (later United Church) missionaries arrived in China in 1888 until the abrupt closure of the North China Mission in 1947, Canadian nurses were ubiquitous in Henan. As China underwent a tumultuous transition from dynastic kingdom to independent republic, Canadian nurses advanced a version of hospital-based nursing education and practice that rivalled modern nursing care in Canada. In Healing Henan, Sonya Grypma offers a highly readable and fresh perspective on China missions and the global expansion of professional nursing. As the first comprehensive study of missionary nursing in China, it will be of particular interest to nurses and missionaries, and to historians of Canada, China, nursing, medicine, women's work, and missions.
As is evident in this volume of her clinical and theoretical papers, Hanna Segal has established herself as one of the most productive and sensitive clinical psychoanalysts in the field today. Using techniques based on the work of both Freud and Klein, she has shown a consistent interest in working with patients presenting the most severe types of psychopathology. Her techniques stress the analytic and insightful resolution of these disturbances rather than avoidance based on anxiety in the therapist.
Te Henua Enana: Images and Settlement Patterns in The Marquesas Islands, French Polynesia represents the first attempt in Polynesian archaeology to systematically examine rock art in the Marquesas Islands in relation to settlement patterns and excavation data. Sidsel N. Millerstrom's groundbreaking archaeological research is based on more than 15 years of field work in the islands. Surveying the dramatic landscapes of the deep valleys and thick forests of the Marquesas, Millerstrom and her team found a significant quantity of rock art. They learned that every image was not randomly placed but rather purposefully positioned according to prehistoric Marquesan cultural norms. The images were found on public and private prehistoric architecture, on outcrops, rock shelters, walls of underground pits, narrow ridges and springs. Based on our present understanding of science, Millerstrom also explains what the prehistoric petroglyphs, pictographs and anthropomorphic sculptures probably signified to the past inhabitants. This monograph, first published in 2017, is volume 67 of the series Contributions of the University of California Archaeological Research Facility.

This book is a collection of oral stories from members of an African American family called the Hanna, Heastie, Tynes, who originated on a Bahama Island settlement called Pompey Bay, which is almost uninhabited today. The family traces their origins to three men (John Hanna, George Heastie, and Benjamin Tynes) who were settlers on Acklins Island, and the slaves who worked there in the late 1700s. Due to the isolated nature of the island, the people living there intermarried and became a proud, loving, tightknit family, who thrived and passed down family values through the generations. This book includes memories of everyday life experiences from some of the family members who lived on Acklins and later migrated to Miami, Florida. Today, the family has grown and spread to other Bahama Islands, the U.S. and other parts of the world. As a result of these stories, we have a glimpse of what life was like so many years ago.
