Dry Rot in the Ivory Tower

Dry Rot in the Ivory Tower

John R. Campbell

University Press of America
2000
nidottu
While many books have criticized higher education for an apparent bias towards leftist agendas, John R. Campbell takes a different approach. Through the compilation of 65 vignettes that peek behind the boardroom door, the author focuses on the bureaucratic and organizational stagnation that has led to "dry rot" in the ivory towers of academia. Dry Rot in the Ivory Tower presents substantive evidence of the problems that exist in universities today, and provides the author's prognosis for change. He addresses nepotism, ineffective faculty, lack of effective leadership, and other serious problems at our institutions of higher education.
A Collective Biography of Twelve World-Class Leaders

A Collective Biography of Twelve World-Class Leaders

John R. Shoup

University Press of America
2005
nidottu
This collective biography on twelve world-class leaders provides timeless principles on how families, as well as educational, civic, religious, and military organizations, can facilitate the development of exemplary leaders. The biographies and autobiographies of great leaders reveal the importance of an involved parent, happy childhood, plethora of "apprenticeships," rich formal and informal education, a steady stream of prodigious patrons, gracious critics, and a favorable fate. In addition to biographical data, this study synthesizes the various trends in leadership studies to develop a comprehensive model. A coherent theory on leadership has been elusive because scholars have focused on specific parts of leadership without recognition of the whole. The biographical data and synthesis of various leadership theories demonstrates that leaders share similar story lines in their development. The seven identified influences and the three stages of leadership development outlined in the book illustrate themes necessary for true leadership qualities to emerge within an individual. This book is intended for anyone interested in developing exceptional leaders.
Christianity in Culture

Christianity in Culture

John R. Sommerfeldt

University Press of America
2009
nidottu
In Christianity in Culture, the author reflects upon the interaction of Christianity and culture. Although the history of the Church is often prominent in this book, the subject is not that of Church history. The history of the institution known as "church" is important to this story because the Church, like all institutions, becomes a component of culture, reflecting and influencing ideas. The Church is an institution devised to make Christianity real and tangible and, like all institutions, has changed over time in both structure and organization. The reformations of the sixteenth century, for instance, had repercussions as such that today it is no longer possible to speak simply of "the Church" without acknowledging its fragmentation. Sommerfeldt describes these competing ideas of Christianity without supporting any one side. Rather, the author provides the cultural and historical background that will enable the reader to understand the differing positions of Christianity.
The Flight and Fall of the Eagle

The Flight and Fall of the Eagle

The intellectual, cultural, and political renaissance that characterized the Europe of Charlemagne was threatened severely by invasions from all sides. Only Germany avoided the consequent phenomenon of feudalism. This was due to a series of rulers who provided protection to the people, reform to the Church, and patronage of cultural revival. From the thirteenth century, this cultural and political unity began to fragment, and by 1648 what had been a successful revival of the Roman Empire had been destroyed. In addition to tracing the political, cultural and religious history of medieval Germany, this volume examines the thought of outstanding German men and women, and includes an extensive account of the changing status of German Jews.

In an age of misinformation and public apprehension about climate change, droughts, floods, and polluted drinking water, Global Thirst offers a critical perspective on water, its uses, and access, as a major global issue in the 21st century. Environmental historian John R. Wennersten turns an unflinching eye on today's global water problems, critically analyzing pollution, drought, dying rivers, and the privatization of water utilities. He also offers commentary on what kinds of sustainable water options we should be pursuing in the 21st century. Wennersten's analysis of water ranges from Nigeria to India and China to Australia and the United States–it goes a long way towards correcting the popular notion that "there will always be water." This is an ideal treatise for professionals working in government, the environment, international affairs, and public policy.

From early December 1941 through much of 1945, many U.S. Navy and U.S. Army Air Force and Army personnel served at joint Brazilian–U.S. bases in the coastal cities of Brazil and on two islands in the Atlantic Narrows between that country and Africa. The U.S. Fourth Fleet, based in Recife, Brazil, and its Fleet Air Wing 16, based at several coastal cities, were there to wage war on Axis Power submarines, surface raiders, and blockade runners. The U-Boats and armed raiders were sinking Allied ships at an alarming rate. The blockade runners were carrying vital war materials to the Axis Powers. This compilation of anecdotes, photographs, and maps is presented to provide the reader with a perspective on the experiences of U.S. service personnel who were lucky enough to serve in Brazil. It is hoped that the commentary on the history of Brazil and its people will inspire greater interest in that country and the realization of its importance in the future of South America and the entire western hemisphere.
