Blitz on Kent

Blitz on Kent

Khan Mark

Pen Sword Aviation

nidottu
Located on the far south-eastern corner of Britain, Kent was the closest county to Occupied Europe. Suffering not only direct bombardment by heavy guns from France, the airspace over Kent provided the quickest route from Luftwaffe airfields in Northern France to London. As such the county suffered from the very beginning of the Battle of Britain, the Blitz in 1940, through the Tip and Run raids of 1942 and 1943, to the V-1 and V-2 weapon onslaught that only ended in 1945. Towns such as Canterbury were also singled out and suffered their very own Blitz. As a result of this continuous onslaught during the Second World War, the county earned the nickname "Hellfire Corner".

A captivating biography of Katharine, Duchess of Kent. Ideal for readers of Hugo Vickers, Anne de Courcy, Theo Aronson and Christopher Warwick. In this detailed biographical study of Katharine, Duchess of Kent, Helen Cathcart tells an enchanting story of a Yorkshire soldier squire's daughter who grew up to become an admired and popular member of the Royal Family. In this intimate and illuminating account, Cathcart charts the first forty years of the Duchess's life, from her birth during a snowstorm at the family home, Hovingham Hall, and wartime childhood through to schooldays at Castle Howard and early career working in a children's home. We also learn of her first meeting with Prince Edward, the Duke of Kent and of the affectionate friendship that matured into a royal romance. In The Duchess of Kent we follow the Duchess from Hovingham Hall and Coppins to Hong Kong and Germany as an Army officer's wife. We discover the deep veins of community service in her family, and the author reveals the source of the Duchess of Kent's wide popularity. Praise for Helen Cathcart: 'Wide acclaim as a royal biographer ... objective, uninhibited and penetrating' - Sunday Express 'Helen Cathcart writes about royalty as if she were one of them' - The Daily Mail 'The doyenne of royal biographers' - The Daily Telegraph 'A tireless chronicler of royalty' - The Guardian

Tales of Forgotten Kent is a collection of twenty-two essays about the people and events that have largely been neglected by historians, but remain an integral part of Kent’s rich tapestry, featuring the eccentric, unusual and often overlooked tales buried within the garden of England.Who would have thought that the cradle of British aviation was the unfashionable Isle of Sheppey, home to Britain’s first licensed pilots and the world’s first aircraft manufacturers; or that the greatest technological change in printing – computer typesetting – occurred in the small town of Westerham; and that the poet who wrote the first sonnet was not actually Shakespeare but Sir Thomas Wyatt of Allington Castle, lover of Anne Boleyn; or that Britain’s oldest school is The King’s School, Canterbury, whose alumni includes the controversial playwright Christopher Marlowe, and still plays host to ghostly legends.Read on to unearth more of Kent’s best kept secrets and keep its forgotten tales alive.

Bounded by sea on three sides, Kent has the longest coastline of any English county and was the base for much maritime activity, giving rise to communities rich in sea-lore.Fran and Geoff Doel explore the folklore, legends, customs and songs of Kent and the causative factors behind them. From saints to smugglers, hop-pickers to hoodeners, mummers to May garlands and wife sales to witchcraft, this book charts the traditional culture of a populous and culturally significant southern county.

The Maid of Kent pub sits in the village of Cobshaw and at the centre of controversy. The local descendants of the Plantagenets and the Tudors each have an eye on the property, but for different reasons. The current owner Percival needs to sell, but will only let it go to another Planter, as the descendants of the Plantagenets call themselves. Hotelier Howard Greene claims Plantagenet blood and wants to add the property to his long empire. But is he really descended from the kings who once ruled England?Local historian Brenda Randall knows everything there is to know about Cobsham and its inhabitants, including the history of the actual maid of Kent, Cecilia. What is now the pub was once her ancestral home, Cobshaw Court, and Brenda wants to restore the home and make it a stately inn. But her plans are soon interrupted. Then a windstorm uncovers a burial site, and Marsh and Daughter, the local authors and sleuths, have a new mystery to solve. But who was buried under the old copper beech? And how is it connected to the endless fighting between the Planters and the Tudors in the picture- perfect village of Cobshaw? Amy Myers has been a full-time writer since 1988, and has written a wide range of novels from historical sagas and contemporary romance to crime. She is married to an American and lives in Kent. An Historical Atlas of Kent

An Historical Atlas of Kent

David Killingray

Phillimore Co Ltd

Kent can probably claim to have more unique features in its history than most other counties, all fully reflected in this Atlas. The Cathedral at Canterbury with its medieval shrine to St Thomas Becket requires the general subject of pilgrimage to be covered in detail; the Cinque Ports - the echoes of their ancient privileges still apparent by the early 19th century - are another Kentish phenomenon; Romney Marsh, although not quite the separate continent that some claim, is nevertheless well worthy of the detailed account of its medieval history; Kent's perennial role as a gateway is perfectly illustrated by the 'Strangers' from the near Continent who settled widely here in the 16th and 17th centuries.Kent's industrial history is dominated by the unique concentration of royal dockyards; while the story of Kent's coalfield, isolated from its cousins in the North and Midlands, is yet another remarkable chapter. Finally, being located between the Capital and the shortest crossing to the Continent, Kent's relationship with London has been exceptionally close since medieval times and is a recurring theme in this Atlas. This comprehensive, new Historical Atlas, based on current research, fills a notable gap in the published histories of the County and will serve for many years as an important work of reference for the history of Kent. The 250 newly-drawn and reader-friendly maps cover topics ranging from the earliest Stone-Age occupation to such modern developments as the growth of leisure industries. Several topics not usually covered in county historical atlases are included, for example the introduction of public water and gas supplies in the 19th century, together with the expansion of banking services and the local press. Virtually every aspect of Kent's history is clearly mapped and explained in this remarkable new work. Though Kent has seen much in its time, it has never before seen a book like this, which will be welcomed well beyond the Kentish borders.
