This book is intended as a text for a course in programming languages. The pre­ requisites for such a course are insight in structured programming and knowledge as well as practical experience of at least one (e.g., Pascal) of the programming languages treated in the book. The emphasis is on language concepts rather than on syntactic details. The book covers a number of important language concepts that are related to data struc­ tures. The comparison of the programming languages Pascal, Algol 68, PL/1 and Ada consists in investigating how these concepts are supported by each of these languages. Interesting evaluation criteria are generality, simplicity, safety, readability and portability. The study of programming languages is based on a simple model called SMALL. This model serves as a didactic vehicle for describing, comparing and evaluating data structures in various programming languages. Each chapter centers around a specific language concept. It consists of a general discussion followed by a number of language sections, one for each of the languages Pascal, Algol 68, PL/1 and Ada. Each of these sections contains a number of illustrating program fragments written in the programming language concerned. For each program fragment in one language, there is an analogous fragment in the others. The book can be read "vertically" so that the programming languages Pascal, Algol 68, PL/1 and Ada are encountered in that order several times. A "horizontal" reading of the book would consist in selecting only those sections which only concern one language.

Gegenstand dieses Buches ist der sinnvolle Umgang mit klassischen Programmier- sprachen. Darunter werden die in der Praxis verbreiteten prozeduralen Sprachen verstanden, deren bekannteste Vertreter Fortran, Cobol, PLII, Basic und Pascal sind. Die Idee, dieses Buch zu schreiben, entstand angesichts der unbefriedigenden Situation auf dem Gebiet der Programmiersprachen. Obwohl die Informatikfor- schung in den letzten zehn bis funfzehn Jahren zahlreiche Sprachen hervorgebracht hat, die hervorragend aufgebaut sind und uber durchgangige und klare Sprachkon- zepte verfugen, werden nach wie vor in der Praxis hauptsachlich Programmierspra- chen eingesetzt, die vor dieser Zeit entstanden sind und nach heutiger Einschatzung entscheidende Mangel aufweisen. Es erscheint fraglich, ob die neue Generation von Programmiersprachen jemals die "alteingesessenen" Sprachen verdrangen kann, zumal die Flexibilitat der Betrie- be in dieser Hinsicht nicht besonders gross ist: viele betriebliche EDV-Anwender befinden sich noch heute im Stadium der Assembler-Programmierung, und haufig gilt es bereits als enormer Fortschritt, wenn uberhaupt der UEbergang zu Cobol oder einer anderen hoeheren Programmiersprache vollzogen wird. Die Entstehung des Software Engineering und die Weiterentwicklung der Soft- waretechnologie in den letzten ein bis zwei Jahrzehnten trugen dazu bei, dass wichti- ge Sprachelemente fur den sinnvollen Aufbau von Programmen und Programmsy- sternen in die neuentwickelten Sprachen bereits aufgenommen wurden. Dagegen bleibt der Anwender alterer Sprachen mit Schlagwoertern wie "struktu- rierte Programmierung", "schrittweise Verfeinerung", "Modularisierung", "Infor- mation Hiding" u. a. zunachst alleingelassen. In seiner Programmiersprache findet er keine oder nur wenige Ausdrucksmittel, die auf diese Konzepte unmittelbar zu- geschnitten sind.

The aim of these studies is to show how Pascal's moral outlook reflects the influence on his thought of the basic doctrine of the three orders. This does not mean that an attempt is made to classify all Pascal's moral judgements in order to relate them to that doctrine. The intention is rather to dIstinguish the different moral stances Pascal takes, and to ascertain how far the apparent inconsistencies between them can be explained, if not reconciled, in the light of the orders. It is made clear at the outset how the three orders form the framework of Pascal's scale of values, with the different orders representing at once categories of moral value and orders of being. The peculiar nature of this scale, in which moral and ontological values coalesce, calls for a double criterion, or variable, to allow for differences both of degree and of kind. Since the criterion of rank in the scale is reality, the assigning of value becomes largely a question of perspective: a quality from a given order taken by itself is real, and has moral value, but when compared with a quality from a higher order it loses both its reality and its worth.
