Three Views on the Origins of the Synoptic Gospels

Three Views on the Origins of the Synoptic Gospels

Robert L. Thomas

Kregel Publications,U.S.
2002
nidottu
While secular critics and liberal religious scholars have discounted the historicity and integrity of the first three Gospels, evangelicals maintain that the Synoptic Gospels fully support a high view of inspiration and historicity, despite varying views among evangelicals on Gospel origins. Four evangelical scholars join together in a presentation/response format to examine the three dominant views on Gospel origins. Grant Osborne and Matthew Williams present the Two-Source or Markian Priority View; John H. Niemel presents the Two Gospel or Matthewan Priority View; and F. David Farnell presents the Independence View. Robert Thomas provides a helpful introduction to the issues and a final summary of the discussion.
Where There Is No Miracle – Finding Hope in Pain and Suffering
You don't always need a miracle to find light in times of darknessHeartbreak is impartial. Tragedies--global and personal--strike every day. Destruction, anxiety, and catastrophe have become our daily companions.Over his long career, Robert Wise has been on the front lines of disaster. From the Oklahoma City bombing to 9/11's ground zero to the bedsides of lost loved ones, Wise has stood on tragic ground and ministered to those who have lost seemingly everything. Each of those hurting people asked the same questions: Why do the innocent suffer? Why doesn't God deliver the light of miracles in the darkest times? In the midst of his own questioning, Wise has discovered some surprising and encouraging answers. In this book, he shares those lessons, encouraging all those who struggle. You'll learn some unexpected positive benefits of pain and suffering, and see how God is always behind the scenes working for the ultimate good--even when you can't see or imagine how."With transparency and compassion, Wise delivers numerous illustrations of God's incredible timing along with His grace, His mercy, and the unbelievable healing power of His love."--S. Bryan Hickox, Emmy-winning television producer

When faced with a patient whose psychological symptoms may stem from an organic, or medical, condition rather than psychology, how does the practitioner determine exactly which is the true case? To facilitate this process and give psychologists, social workers, and nurses a useable guide to assessment, Robert Taylor created Psychological Masquerade and has updated it to be the most complete handbook you will ever need in the field. New chapters on violent behavior, amnesia and dementia, sex obsession, and Munchausen-by-Proxy fill out the guide and numerous case studies help clarify diagnostic criteria and provide a welcome hands-on approach to caring for clients in this delicate balance. As a further enhancement of the text as assessment tool, self-tests for hypothetical cases are included as are specific clinical tests that aid in clue gathering. This is the perfect clinical guide for any practitioner who is likely to come into contact with psychological masquerade among their clients and will be a welcome addition to the practitioner's toolbox.

Jesse James and the Civil War in Missouri

Jesse James and the Civil War in Missouri

Robert L. Dyer

University of Missouri Press
1994
nidottu
The Civil War in Missouri was a time of great confusion, violence and destruction. Although several major battles were fought in the state between Confederate and Union forces, much of the fighting in Missouri was an ugly form of terrorism carried out by loose bands of Missouri guerrillas, by Kansas ""Jayhawkers"", or by marauding patrols of Union soldiers. This irregular warfare provided a training ground for people like Jesse and Frank James who, after the war, used their newly learned skills to form an outlaw band that ultimately became known all over the world. ""Jesse James and the Civil War in Missouri"" discusses the underlying causes of the Civil War as they relate to Missouri and reveals how the war helped create both the legend and the reality of Jesse James and his gang. Written in an accessible style, this text should be welcomed by anyone with an interest in the US Civil War, the legend of Jesse James, or Missouri history.
It Shouldn't be This Way

It Shouldn't be This Way

The failure of long-term care is the country's best-kept embarrassing secret. Almost every adult in the United States will either enter a nursing home or have to deal with a parent or other relative who does. Studies show that 40 percent of all adults who live to age sixty-five will enter a nursing home before they die, while even more will use another form of long-term care. Part memoir, part practical guide, part prescription for change, It Shouldn't Be This Way is a unique look at the problems of long-term care. Robert L. Kane, a highly experienced physician and gerontologist, and his sister, Joan C. West, tell the painful story of what happened to their mother after she suffered a debilitating stroke and spent the last years of her life in rehabilitation, assisted-living facilities, and finally a nursing home. Along the way, her adult children encountered some professionals who were kind and considerate but also many frustrations - inadequate care and the need to hire private duty aides, as well as poor communication and lack of coordination throughout the system. The situation, they found, proved far more difficult than it needed to be. As the authors recount their mother's story, they impart various lessons they learned from each phase of the experience. They alert those who are confronting such situations for the first time about what they will likely face and how to approach the problems. Closing with a broader look at why long-term care is the way it is, they propose steps to make necessary reforms, including the development of national organizations to work for change. Their message to families, care professionals, and policy-makers could not be more urgent.

Automotive Milestones

Automotive Milestones

Robert L. Norton

Industrial Press Inc.,U.S.

This is a general interest trade book that describes the development of automotive technology and engineering from the start of the industry before 1900 to the present day. It explains how various systems and elements in the automobile work in layman's terms, without resorting to mathematics, and highlights the keymilestones in the historical development of automotive technology. All photos and illustrations are in full color. The intended audience is older teens to adults of any age who are interested in the subject and may be involved in it as a hobby. Sometimes referred to as "gearheads" or "motorheads", they form a huge market. Over the years many of the author's engineering students were in this category, and he often would meet with on-campus car clubs to explain the way things automotive worked, being careful to damp down or eliminate any complicated mathematics, as he does in this book. An Internet search found only titles that are either "hard-engineering oriented" -- such as publications from the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) -- or mere compendiums of dates. Books in the latter category note the milestones but without hardly any explanation at all of how these developments actually work in a technical sense - which is the aim of this book. "Automotive Milestones, by Robert L. Norton, is about all the mechanisms that are needed in an automobile and how they work. The book consists of eight main chapters, each one covering a major mechanical system of the automobile plus a summary chapter and appendices. There are numerous photographs and illustrations used throughout the book to support the concepts discussed. The author has thoroughly researched the subject and leaves the reader with a new appreciation of what has been tried over the nearly 250 years of automobile history. The book is logically organized and clearly explained in a way that only a person with in-depth knowledge could do. His latest book is Automotive Milestones which provides the cornerstones of a thorough understanding of automobile technology. If you are just looking for a general understanding of the automobile, looking for inspiration in support of a new idea, or just want a concise history of automotive milestones, this book is a must read."—Parker Ackley, Antique Automobile EnthusiastDid you ever wonder?...Who formed the first automobile company in America? When and who made the first fully automatic transmission? (Hint: it was not GM in 1939)What is the difference between sprung and unsprung weight in a car, and why does it matter? When did the frame of a car get replaced by the unibody? How does a differential work?It took more than 100 years to develop the modern automobile. This book presents a very readable and informative description of this evolution. The author, Robert Norton, is an engineer with many years of experience in the design of machinery. Automotive Milestomes is a clear presentation of the internal workings of the automobile over the years. No matter whether you are a seasoned car buff or just curious to learn more about the history of cars, you will enjoy reading this book.—William J.
