Perhaps the most controversiaZ aspect of this voZume is the number (V) assigned to the conference in this series. ActuaZZy, the first conference to be heZd under the titZe '~tomic CoZZisions in SoZids" was heZd at Sussex University in EngZand in 1969 and the second at GausdaZ, Norway in 1971, which wouZd ZogicaZZy make the conference heZd at GatZinburg, Tennessee, U. S. A. in 1973 the third (III). However, the appearance of the proceedings of the 1971 GausdaZ Conference (pubZished by Gordon and Breach) bore the number IV. The reasoning behind this was that, in fact, two pre- vious conferences had been ZargeZy dedicated to the same subject area. The first of these Was at Aarhus, Denmark in 1965 and the second in 1967 was heZd in ChaZk River, Canada. Hence, the number V for the 1973 meeting. ActuaZZy, the conference can easiZy be traced back to Paris, France in 196Z when it went under the coZorfuZ titZe of '~e Bom- bardement Ionique. " In 1962 a smaZZ conference was heZd at Oak Ridge, Tennessee, U. S. A. at which the discovery of channeZing was first formaZZy annunciated. This was foZZowed by conferences at ChaZk River, Canada in 1963 and at HarweZZ, EngZand in 1964. More- over, immediateZy foZZowing the ChaZk RiVer conference in 1967 there was a conference on higher energy coZZisions at Brookhaven, New York, U. S. A. Thus, strictly speaking, the Gatlinburg meeting is the tenth (X) in the series.

Entering a full-time private practice and forsaking the comforts of a regular paycheck was a difficult decision for me. Fortunately, I was able to begin my practice on a part-time basis in space rented from two physician friends. By using my behavior skills for self-management and organization, I was then able to help my practice grow so that, with some trepidation, I moved into a full-time practice. I have continued to maintain my practice according to the same ethical, professional, and business assumptions discussed in this book. One of the reasons for my writing this book is that, at the time I was beginning my practice, there was no one text that helped me begin or to explain what "nuts and bolts" issues I needed to consider. As my practice has grown, I continued to see a need for a resource text to help the beginning therapist get started. I decided to describe the assump tions, methods, and issues that I have used so as to present a discussion of timely issues relevant to the practice of behavior therapy.

Eight years ago, four psychologists with varying backgrounds but a common in terest in the impact of environmental stress on behavior and health met to plan a study of the effects of aircraft noise on children. The impetus for the study was an article in the Los Angeles Times about architectural interventions that were planned for several noise-impacted schools under the air corridor of Los Angeles Interna tional Airport. These interventions created an opportunity to study the same chil dren during noise exposure and then later after the exposure had been attenuated. The study was designed to test the generality of several noise effects that had been well established in laboratory experimental studies. It focused on three areas: the relationship between noise and personal control, noise and attention, and noise and cardiovascular response. Two years later, a second study, designed to replicate and extend findings from the first, was conducted.

Life in the theatre is often a rollercoaster ride, with all the excitement and occasional anguish that come with the highs and lows. The author's journey in the American theatre has been amplified by his experience as a Black man who has frequently been "one of the few," "the first" or even "the only." His directing career has been full of rewards and opportunities as well as huge challenges and frustrations, along with the anger that has come from being "chased by race" for so many years. Much of the author's experience comes from two decades artistic director of Pasadena Playhouse, one of the oldest and well-known theatres in America, and for a time early in his career, one of the whitest. It relates how the theatre was radically changed and reignited by his leadership, including his insistence on making diversity a priority onstage and off.
