Noemí is more suited for cocktail parties than amateur sleuthing. Three women in three different eras encounter danger and witchcraft in this eerie multigenerational horror saga from the New York Times bestselling author of Mexican Gothic.'Back then, when I was a young woman, there were still witches': That was how Nana Alba always began the stories she told her great-granddaughter Minerva - stories that have stayed with Minerva all her life. Perhaps that's why Minerva has become a graduate student focused on the history of horror literature and is researching the life of Beatrice Tremblay, an obscure author of macabre tales. In the course of assembling her thesis, Minerva uncovers information that reveals that Tremblay's most famous novel, The Vanishing, was inspired by a true story: Decades earlier, during the Great Depression, Tremblay attended the same university where Minerva is now studying and became obsessed with her beautiful and otherworldly roommate, who then disappeared under mysterious circumstances. As Minerva descends ever deeper into Tremblay's manuscript, she begins to sense that the malign force that stalked Tremblay and the missing girl might still walk the halls of the campus. These disturbing events also echo the stories Nana Alba told about her girlhood in 1900s Mexico, where she had a terrifying encounter with a witch.Minerva suspects that the same shadow that darkened the lives of her great-grandmother and Beatrice Tremblay is now threatening her own in 1990s Massachusetts. An academic career can be a punishing pursuit, but it might turn outright deadly when witchcraft is involved.

We live in an age of digital ID. Through the digitisation of our biometric and demographic selves, digital ID converts human beings into digital data, which in turn mediates access to services and rights – be they public or private, commercial or not-for-profit, essential or non-essential. Allegedly designed to improve services, and to aid humanitarianism and social inclusion, digital ID has multiple hidden complexities. From denying access to essential goods, to algorithmic bias, to the sharing of sensitive data about vulnerable groups – digital ID is not necessarily just, or balanced, or helping. It is often severely unfair. This book offers a journey into stories of unfair ID. Exploring examples across sectors, countries and data-managed populations, it takes a data justice perspective on what this unfairness effectively means for the users of digital identity systems. Examples range from denial of food rations to eligible beneficiaries, to the searchability of asylum-seeker data in police force databases, to the algorithmically-determined exclusion of genuinely entitled users from anti-poverty schemes. This book also explores forms of resistance to these injustices, showing how solidarity movements can resist, engage and challenge the damages of unfair ID. Through its research, it sets out to imagine forms of fair ID where people’s rights and entitlements are upheld, ultimately contributing to build a future of justice for the digitally identified. Silvia Masiero is an Associate Professor of Information Systems at the HISP Center, Department of Informatics, University of Oslo.

Experience the drama that was twentieth century Cuba and the aftermath of the Cuban diaspora of the 1960s from the front row seat of Rosa Maria (Rosy) Teresa de la Concepci n de Varona de Morell Romero (1914-2011). Rosy grew up in the Havana society of the 1920s; worked in the underground to topple Cuban dictator Gerardo Machado; married Jos Morell Romero, a student revolutionary, who later became cabinet minister, supreme court justice and provisional president of Cuba in exile; escaped from repression in Cuba in the 1930s; was again exiled to Florida in 1960, leaving behind a grown daughter, grandchildren and extensive real estate holdings; cooperated with her husband in efforts to liberate Cuba from Communism, including serving as the First Lady of Cuba in exile; endured her son's imprisonment after the unsuccessful Bay of Pigs invasion; raised three children and experienced the loss of two (one at birth); left her mark in Western Nebraska, where she made many friends and became president of a small town woman's club that was featured in Life Magazine; suffered the loss of her husband of 68 years; painted over 150 works in oil; charmed, loved and was loved. She inspired many with her unceasing faith in her Maker and lived by the precept that things should be done well or not at all. Come with the author on a journey through Rosy's transformation from a Havana socialite, to an impoverished exile and ultimately to a naturalized citizen living the American dream.
