Denna volym ger en överblick av svensk antikforskning i Medelhavsområdet från början av 1800-talet till 1970-talet. Fokus ligger på kung Gustaf VI Adolf (1882-1973) och hans roll som arkeolog och ordförande i ett flertal arkeologiska sällskap, expeditioner och forskningsinstitut under tiden som kronprins, 1907-1950. Konferensvolymen speglar såväl forskningsmässiga utmaningar som en ansats att diskurera svensk arkeologi i Medelhavsområdet i historiskt perspektiv. "Gamle kungens" intressen och inflytande i diverse forskningsnärverk ligger i fokus här. Kungahusförbindelsens roll i termer av exempelvis forskningsinitiering har i det avseendet varit odiskutabel, samtidigt som exempelvis maktspel och samspelet mellan praktik och politik är viktiga faktorer för en mer nyanserad förståelse av detta inflytande. Skriften utgör ett steg på vägen mot en problematisering av Gustaf VI Adolfs roll i detta avseende. Den svenska fältarkeologiska verksamheten placeras i en vid samhällshistorisk, kulturell och politisk kontext. Diverse forskningshistoriska tolkningsnycklar betonas, såsom exempelvis nationalism, politik, rivalitet, kulturarvseffekter, satelliteffekter, initiatörer i relation till strukturer, kulturella, sociala och ekonomiska förutsättningar, samt könsroller och traditionsuppfattningar. However, the declassification of all historically significant documents related to Nazi Germany has proven Fest's statement wrong. Among millions of pages, researchers uncovered records detailing Hitler's health and the widespread drug use among German army members--including Hitler himself. For the last nine years of his life, Adolf Hitler--a lifelong hypochondriac--was treated by Dr. Theodor Morell. Hitler's mood swings, Parkinson's disease, gastrointestinal symptoms, skin issues, and steady decline leading up to his suicide in April 1945 are all documented in Morell's meticulous medical diaries.

Adolf Busch (1891-1952) galt zu Lebzeiten als der bedeutendste deutsche Geiger, seine Interpretationen der Werke von Bach, Beethoven und Reger sind bis heute legendar. Zwischen den Weltkriegen pragte er als Solist, als Leiter des Busch-Quartetts und im Duo mit dem Pianisten Rudolf Serkin das Zurcher Musikleben. Kein auswartiger Musiker trat so haufig in der Tonhalle auf wie er. Den Nationalsozialismus bekampfte Busch aus voller Uberzeugung und lehnte es nach 1933 ab, in Hitler-Deutschland aufzutreten. 1935 wurde er Schweizer Burger, emigrierte 1939 in die USA und kehrte nach 1947 immer wieder in die Schweiz zuruck. Adolf Busch war auch als Komponist bekannt. Ein Blick auf jene Werke, die im Zusammenhang mit dem Zurcher Musikleben entstanden, zeigt aber, dass er als Schopfer eigener Musik weniger Erfolg hatte. Anhand von Korrespondenzen und Zeitungsberichten vermittelt das Buch Eindrucke von Buschs Wirkung auf die unmittelbaren Zeitgenossen, unter ihnen der Schriftsteller Thomas Mann, die Geigerin Stefi Geyer, der Zurcher Dirigent Volkmar Andreae und der Winterthurer Musikmazen Werner Reinhart.

Contemporary architectural theory emphasizes the importance of 'tectonics', the term used to articulate the relationship between construction, structure and architectural expression. Despite the term's currency, little consideration has been given to its origins or historical significance. In this 2002 study, Werner Oechslin examines the attempts by early modern theoreticians of architecture to grapple with the relationship between appearance and essence, which is crucial to the discourse of tectonics. Referring to the writings of Joseph Lux, Karl Bötticher, and Adolf Loos, Oechslin follows this development from theories of a classical architecture without columnar orders to a Modern architecture upholding the 'truth'of its own architectural expression. Oechslin locates the culmination of this discourse in the work of Adolf Loos and in Le Corbusier's frequent references to Ancient Greece as the precedent of Modern architecture's honesty. This volume includes an anthology of primary texts by several theorists published in English.
