Why has "America" - that is, the United States of America - become so much more than simply a place in the imagination of so many people around the world? In both Europe and Latin America, the United States has often been a site of multiple possible futures, a screen onto which could be projected utopian dreams and dystopian nightmares. Whether castigated as a threat to civilized order or championed as a promise of earthly paradise, America has invariably been treated as a cipher for modernity. It has functioned as an inescapable reference point for both European and Latin American societies, not only as a model of social and political organization - one to reject as much one to emulate - but also as the prime example of a society emerging from a dramatic diversity of cultural and social backgrounds.

From the Pampas lowlands of Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil to the Altiplano plateau that stretches between Chile and Peru, the plains of Latin America have haunted the literature and culture of the continent. Bringing these landscapes into focus as a major subject of Latin American culture, this book outlines innovative new ecocritcial readings of canonical literary texts from the 19th century to the present. Tracing these natural landscapes across national borders the book develops a new transnational understanding of Hispanic culture in South America and expands the scope of the contemporary environmental humanities.Texts covered include works by: Ciro Alegría, Manoel de Barros, Ezequiel Martínez Estrada, Rómulo Gallegos, José Eustasio Rivera, João Guimarães Rosa, and Domingo Sarmiento.

The choice between BE and GET as auxiliary verbs, as in “She was promoted” vs “She got promoted”, is a central, grammatical feature, yet the many proposed nuances conditioning this phenomenon have escaped large-scale empirical validation to date. This book fills this gap, using multivariate statistical analyses of several large corpora to explore different factors determining the choice of English passive auxiliary.Addressing both diachronic developments (using the Corpus of Historical American English) and synchronic regional variation (using the Corpus of Global Web-based English), the book employs methods that combine traditional corpus linguistics with newer machine-learning tools in an innovative and intricate manner. To circumscribe the variable context, the authors train a statistical model to distinguish central from peripheral passives. The study tests the influence of various predictors, derived from the previous literature on the passive, with the use of automated sentiment analysis and subject detection, manual animacy coding, distributional semantics, and a mixed-effects regression model. Putting forward an automatic way of distinguishing more stative from more dynamic passives, the book demonstrates how to examine the passive construction in a much larger dataset than in previous studies, and shows how advanced computational models can be used to productively engage traditional philological questions, such as those related to language change and regional variation.
German U-Boat Losses During World War II

German U-Boat Losses During World War II

Hitler's U-boats fired some of the first shots of the Second World War, going on to threaten the Allies' maritime life lines until the very end of the fighting in Europe. Indeed, the Battle of the Atlantic was the longest continuous military campaign of the war. Not for nothing did Winston Churchill once state that, The only thing that ever really frightened me during the war was the U-boat peril. I was even more anxious about this battle than I had been about the glorious air fight called the Battle of Britain.' The Allies, however, fought back ferociously against the U-boats - as the losses recorded here by the renowned German naval historian Dr Axel Niestl testify. No other publication on this subject comes even close to including the amount of detail provided in this book. An introduction both summarizes previous works on the subject and describes the difficulties of obtaining and verifying information from either the Germans or the Allies on U-boat losses. The main part of the book lists by hull number each U-boat's date of commissioning, its commanding officer, and the date and port of departure for its last patrol. It also gives the date, position, and cause of loss of each submarine, with complete details on Allied units involved in the sinking, the names and ranks of their commanding officers and pilots, and the number of crew killed or rescued.

Coco Chanel's genius for fashion may have been distilled in simplicity, but her life was an extravaganza. A brilliant array of luminaries fell under her spell - Picasso, Churchill, Cocteau; lovers included the Grand Duke Dmitri; the English roue, Boy Capel; a French poet; and, a German spy and the Duke of Westminster, who offered to leave his wife for her permanently, if she would only bear him an heir. Paradoxically, though she might have been regarded in some lights as a pioneering feminist - sacrificing marriage to a revolutionary career in couture - Chanel was utterly baffled by the idea of women's politics. Educated women? 'A woman's education consists of two lessons: never leave the house without stockings, never go out without a hat'. Chanel's rise from penniless orphan to millionaire designer - 'inventing' sportswear, the little black dress and number 5 - makes compelling reading, not least because she was inclined to design her own life as deftly as she did her fashions. Axel Madsen negotiates Chanel's smoke screens with skill, bringing this tantalizing woman to life in all her alluring complexity.
Still Songs: Music In and Around the Poetry of Paul Celan

Still Songs: Music In and Around the Poetry of Paul Celan

Axel Englund

What does it mean for poetry and music to turn to each other, in the shadow of the Holocaust, as a means of aesthetic self-reflection? How can their mutual mirroring, of such paramount importance to German Romanticism, be reconfigured to retain its validity after the Second World War? These are the core questions of Axel Englund's book, which is the first to address the topic of Paul Celan and music. Celan, a Jewish Holocaust survivor who has long been recognized as one of the most important poets of the German language, persistently evoked music and song in his oeuvre, from the juvenilia to the posthumous collections. Conversely, few post-war writers have inspired as large a body of contemporary music, including works by Harrison Birtwistle, György Kurtág, Wolfgang Rihm, Peter Ruzicka and many others. Through rich close readings of poems and musical compositions, Englund's book engages the artistic media in a critical dialogue about the conditions of their existence. In so doing, it reveals their intersection as a site of profound conflict, where the very possibility of musical and poetic meaning is at stake, and confrontations of aesthetic transcendentality and historical remembrance are played out in the wake of twentieth-century trauma.
