A new early chapter book series starring a lovable vampire who's just trying to fit in.Frankie D and his family have just moved from Transylvania, looking for a fresh start. Where Frankie is from, the school day began at midnight and ended at dawn. Now in America, Frankie and his family must adjust their sleep schedule, train to be out in the sun, and strictly adhere to a vegan, zero-blood diet. Not only that, Frankie has to navigate school as the "new kid" and keep his vampire identity secret from other humans. A tall order for a deathly pale, fanged fourth-grader with a three-legged wolf as a pet Brian and Sally Dutra's entertaining series offers a whole new take on what it means to be an outsider. With so many playful twists on vampire tropes, a compelling plot (with a cliffhanger ending ) and loads of deadpan humor, this book is sure to have enormous appeal for early readers. Tiffani Brown's black-and-white illustrations on every spread bring just the right amount of vampire creepiness to the story, tempered by just the right amount of humor. Frankie's open nature and kindness toward others is endearing, and his difficulties trying to navigate a new life while still being true to himself will be relatable to all children. The story highlights important themes of friendship, family, dealing with bullies and adjusting to a new place. It also offers terrific character education lessons on adaptability, initiative and empathy.

Bennu, named for the ancient Egyptian phoenix, was the chosen destination of OSIRIS-REx, NASA’s premier mission of asteroid exploration, launched in 2016. Study of the asteroid is important in safeguarding the future of planet Earth, but Bennu is also a time capsule from the dawn of our Solar System, holding secrets over four-and-a-half billion years old about the origin of life and Earth as a habitable planet. In 2020 the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft successfully landed on the surface of Bennu and collected pristine asteroid material for delivery to Earth in September 2023. Scientific studies of the samples, along with data collected during the rendezvous, promise to help find answers to some of humanity’s deepest questions: Where did we come from? What is our destiny in space? This book, the world’s first complete (and stereoscopic) atlas of an asteroid, is the result of a unique collaboration between OSIRIS-REx mission leader Dante Lauretta and Brian May’s London Stereoscopic Company. Lauretta’s colleagues include Carina Bennett, Kenneth Coles, and Cat Wolner, as well as Brian May and Claudia Manzoni, who became part of the ultimately successful effort to find a safe landing site for sampling. The text details the data collected by the mission so far, and the stereo images have been meticulously created by Manzoni and May from original images collected by the OSIRIS-REx cameras.

As a Peace Corps volunteer, Sean struggles to gain acceptance into a small island community in the Philippines. Upon arrival on the island, Sean realizes that he is an outsider and must prove himself a loyal member of the community if he is to contribute to the island's environmental initiatives. Although he gains the trust of many community members, no good deed goes unpunished. Jealousies and misperceptions sabotage his efforts and vilify his reputation. The island's fisherfolk face great challenges trying to attain their daily sustenance amid environmental degradation and abject poverty. By telling the story of this small island community, the novel describes the lives and dreams of a multitude of characters that Sean meets during his stay in the Central Visayas. Those characters include a snakeboy, a teenage girl with synesthesia, dynamite fishermen, a reformed poacher, scuba divers, environmentalists, an island medic, several benevolent foreigners, some shady expats, ladies of the evening, two schoolteachers, street children, boatmen, some drug addicts and a murderer. Sean finds relief from the physical and psychological challenges of living on a small island by taking short trips to Cebu City. Although the excursions are under the pretext of Peace Corps training and duties, his absence further alienates him from the community on Gilutongan, his Peace Corps site. In Cebu, he befriends a group of expats from a local pub. They broaden Sean's perspective of life in a country with seven thousand islands. Sean also meets Nick, a benevolent American that owns a modest beach-bungalow resort on Mactan. Nick introduces Sean to Rachael. His relationship with Rachael offers solace from the growing hopelessness and dejection he experiences on Gilutongan. However, his inner conflict intensifies as he tries to balance his commitment to the community and his time with Rachael. Just as he is falling in love with Rachael, Sean becomes entangled in a murder investigation. On a deeper level, Sean's experiences expose the complexities of how a community battles to find a balance between their immediate needs and those of their future generations. The line between need and greed comes into question. The line between taking control and being controlled comes into question. The line between good intentions and selfish motives comes into question. The line between reality and perception comes into question. And since this is a story about dreams, the line between carnal desires and love has to come into question. The novel maintains an environmental theme while illuminating connections between environmental degradation and greed. The story emphasizes that it is the poor, especially women and children, who suffer the most when resources become scarce. The story also draws parallels between class domination and environmental degradation. Tides Ebb as Islands Dream is literary fiction that offers some historical background on the Philippines. Although it is an environmental novel, it uses romance, humor, irony, pain, suffering and death to provide insight into the human condition. For more info on the book the characters and the Philippines: http: //www.brianenglish.net/philippinedreams/tides_ebb_as_islands_dream.htm

This book is an introductory text to spinal disorders. Based on the highly successful forerunner to this volume, Practical Orthopaedic Medicine, the book still retains the original philosophy of this text which is to systematically cover all the joints discussing examination, diagnosis and treatment. The full spectrum of therapies is covered with particular emphasis on Maitland's widely practised spinal manipulation techniques - how they are assessed clinically and their role in the management of spinal problems. A complete review of the current literature has been undertaken and a valuable new chapter on the spine in sport has been added. This book will be essential reading for students and practitioners involved in sports medicine, orthopaedic medicine and physiotherapy.
