The Single Market Programme as a Stimulus to Change

The Single Market Programme as a Stimulus to Change

David Mayes; Peter Hart

Cambridge University Press
1994
sidottu
This book offers a comparison of British and German industries’ reaction to the opportunities and threats offered by the single European market (SEM). It outlines the effect that the SEM was expected to have on the two countries and contrasts this with their actual progress based on published data and a detailed study of four industries. While the single European market has had an impact, many measures have had a far weaker effect than expected. The existence of other barriers not tackled by the SEM programme - weakened measures, poor implementation, global business trends and the recent recession - helps dominate the impact of the SEM. Nevertheless the SEM stands out as one of the striking influences on British and German industries for many years. Germany, with its geographical advantage and stronger manufacturing seems better placed to benefit, but the less regulated and often more flexible UK economy may have competitive advantages as the pressures increase.
Nerve Cells and Animal Behaviour

Nerve Cells and Animal Behaviour

Simmons Peter J.; David Young

Cambridge University Press
1999
sidottu
This new edition of Nerve Cells and Animal Behaviour has been updated and expanded by Peter Simmons and David Young in order to take into account more recent advances while still maintaining the accessibility of the book to university students. The book introduces the reader to the way in which nervous systems of animals control behaviour without assuming any prior knowledge of neurophysiology. Using a carefully selected series of behaviour patterns students are taken from an elementary-level introduction to a point where sufficient detail has been assimilated to allow a satisfying insight into current research on how nervous systems control and generate behaviour. Only examples where it has been possible to establish a clear link between the activity of particular nerve cells and a pattern of behaviour have been used. This book is essential reading for students of zoology, psychology and physiology and serves as a clear introduction to neuroethology.

Nerve Cells and Animal Behaviour

pokkari
An extensively revised third edition of this introduction to neuroethology - the neuronal basis of animal behaviour - for zoology, biology and psychology undergraduate students. The book focuses on the roles of individual nerve cells in behaviour, from simple startle responses to complex behaviours such as route learning by rats and singing by crickets and birds. It begins by examining the relationship between brains and behaviour, and showing how study of specialised behaviours reveals neuronal mechanisms that control behaviour. Information processing by nerve cells is introduced using specific examples, and the establishing roles of neurons in behaviour is described for a predator-prey interaction, toads versus cockroaches. New material includes: vision by insects, which describes sensory filtering; hunting by owls and bats, which describes sensory maps; and rhythmical movements including swimming and flying, which describes how sequences of movements are generated. Includes stunning photographs which capture the detail of the behaviour.
Wisdom of the Elders: Sacred Native Stories of Nature
An in-depth, meticulously documented exploration of the ecological wisdom of Native Peoples from around the world Arranged thematically, Wisdom of the Elders contains sacred stories and traditions on the interrelationships between humans and the environment as well as perspectives from modern science, which more often than not validate the sacred, ancient Wisdom of the Elders. Native peoples and environments discussed range from the Inuit Arctic and the Native Americans of the Northwest coast, the Sioux of the Plains, and the Pueblo, Hopi, and Navajo of the Southwest to the Australian Outback, to the rich, fecund tropics of Africa, Malaysia, and the Amazon. "Our technological civilization is speeding toward a violent collision with nature, and we are threatening the ability of the Earth--our home--to support life as we know it. Suzuki and Knudtson's extraordinary work powerfully reminds us that we are indeed one with the Earth. We are truly indebted to them for charting for us the course toward a healthy and sustaining relationship with our planet."--Vice President Al Gore

Putting Words

pokkari
Sent blind soon after birth David Hume stubbornly refused to live the limited life well-meaning elders and social norms expected. 'I do not wake in the morning and regret I'm blind. No, I wake and look to another win in a busy life.' To date, that encompasses years in a blind institute, two marriages, grieving for two outstanding wives, founding recruiting firms, devising marketing techniques, facing business collapse, sailing ocean races and through much of it, being the lead singer in popular bands. If you enjoy a short biography that inspires, saddens, cheers and sticks in your memory, then don't put aside Blind Without Barriers. This eloquently written memoir is about sheer determination, resilience, and the courage to overcome the odds. It's also about a man who refused to accept that a 'normal life' was beyond his reach.
