The publisher Edward Lloyd (1815-1890) helped shape Victorian popular culture in ways that have left a legacy that lasts right up to today. He was a major pioneer of both popular fiction and journalism but has never received extended scholarly investigation until now. Lloyd shaped the modern popular press: Lloyd's Weekly Newspaper became the first paper to sell over a million copies. Along with publishing songs and broadsides, Lloyd dominated the fiction market in the early Victorian period issuing Gothic stories such as Varney the Vampire (1845-7) and other 'penny dreadfuls', which became bestsellers. Lloyd's publications introduced the enduring figure of Sweeney Todd whilst his authors penned plagiarisms of Dickens's novels, such as Oliver Twiss (1838-9). Many readers in the early Victorian period may have been as likely to have encountered the author of Pickwick in a Lloyd-published plagiarism as in the pages of the original author. This book makes us rethink the early reception of Dickens. In this interdisciplinary collection, leading scholars explore the world of Edward Lloyd and his stable of writers, such as Thomas Peckett Prest and James Malcolm Rymer. Edward Albee and the Emergence of Difference and Diversity in US and World Theatre
This collection of essays seeks to present articles that examine the early ventures of the 1960s and 1970s in the progressive theatre of identity with a new contemporary view considering the intersection of race, gender, ethnicity, economic class, and sexual orientation.In 1964, Edward Albee and his producers, Richard Barr and Clinton Wilder, produced Funnyhouse of a Negro by Adrienne Kennedy, and Dutchman by Amiri Baraka (then, Leroi Jones), and by 1968, had produced the seminal gay drama, The Boys in the Band by Mart Crowley. No other major American playwright of this period (including Thornton Wilder, Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams, or William Inge) produced the plays of their junior colleagues with a specific focus on difference and diversity. For most scholars, these productions and Albee’s involvement in them are a somewhat obscure footnote in theatre history. But they remain important for their early support of diverse voices. Even as Albee’s career was skyrocketing, he and his producers had begun a producing project that began the seeds of diversity, equity, and inclusion in a decidedly anti-racist, decolonizing, and progressive move that still resonates powerfully today. Letters of Edward FitzGerald to Fanny Kemble (1871-1883) (Esprios Classics)
Edward FitzGerald or Fitzgerald (31 March 1809 - 14 June 1883) was an English poet and writer. His most famous poem is the first and best known English translation of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, which has kept its reputation and popularity since the 1860s. In 1853, FitzGerald issued Six Dramas of Calderon, freely translated. He then turned to Oriental studies, and in 1856 published anonymously a version of the Sal m n and Abs l of Jami in Miltonic verse. In March 1857, Cowell discovered a set of Persian quatrains by Omar Khayy m in the Asiatic Society library, Calcutta, and sent them to FitzGerald. At the time, the name with which FitzGerald has been so closely identified first occurs in his correspondence: "Hafiz and Omar Khayyam ring like true metal."
