Covering Crime in the Safest State in the Nation: The Life and Days of Eric Francis (Dispatches #3)
Who decides to be a crime photographer is the state with the lowest crime statistics? Eric did, and he takes us along for his sometimes harrowing, sometimes banal work in his state of Vermont. We see the effects of uniquely American and criminal structures on even the safest part of the country, and we meet those most dedicated to serving that community, despite its fractures. Dispatches from individual lives, as they happen: Each short book originates in short confidences recorded by individuals during borrowed moments from their interesting lives. Set amidst some of our most pressing contemporary predicaments and edited by award-winning writers Peter Orner and Laura Lampton Scott, Dispatches captures some of the highs and lows of daily human endurance.

The novel was an early example (and Haggard's introduction implies it was the first) of modern efforts in English at pastiching Viking saga literature. It clearly shows the influence of the pioneering saga translations by William Morris and Eirikr Magnusson in the late 1860s. While it is perhaps not quite a match for Frans Gunnar Bengtsson's genre-defining 1941 novel R de Orm (later expanded and better known as The Long Ships), Bengtsson had the advantage of being culturally closer to his sources. For saga pastiches originating in English, Eric Brighteyes set a standard of quality and fidelity to the saga style that remained unmatched until Poul Anderson's novel The Broken Sword, 60 years later.

Eric Brighteyes By H. Rider Haggard You have graciously conveyed to me the intelligence that during the weary weeks spent far from his home-in alternate hope and fear, in suffering and mortal trial-a Prince whose memory all men must reverence, the Emperor Frederick, found pleasure in the reading of my stories: that "they interested and fascinated him." While the world was watching daily at the bedside of your Majesty's Imperial husband, while many were endeavouring to learn courage in our supremest need from the spectacle of that heroic patience, a distant writer little knew that it had been his fortune to bring to such a sufferer an hour's forgetfulness of sorrow and pain. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

An important innovator in the action-adventure genre, H. Rider Haggard didn't rest on his laurels after creating an immensely popular series based around gentleman explorer Allan Quatermain. Instead, Haggard continued to push the genre forward-sometimes by harking to the ancient past. In the novel Eric Brighteyes, Haggard borrows heavily from Norse mythology, setting a classic action-adventure tale in the land now known as Iceland.

Eric Parry is an architect who draws. This book is about the interaction and relationship of those two practices – of drawing as design tool, and as a way of engaging with the world in which buildings exist and which they play a part in shaping The text comprises a dialogue between Parry and Owen Hopkins, Senior Curator at Sir John Soane’s Museum, London, which is the venue for an exhibition of Parry’s drawings in spring 2019. The dialogue is arranged across ten episodes relating to themes and ideas that emerged over a series of conversations during the creation of the exhibition. At once self-contained and part of a broader whole, these episodes meditate on the meaning, medium and culture of architectural drawing. An essay by David Leatherbarrow, Professor of Architecture and Chairman of the Graduate Group in Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania, offers a counterpoint, providing both a detailed analysis of Parry’s drawing practice and context for the preceding dialogue.
