In primo luogo, essendo basati sull'hardware, la maggior parte di essi funziona a velocit prossime alla linea, incapsulando e spogliando flussi di dati al volo. Questo rende sempre pi difficile causare un attacco di tipo Denial of Service e quasi impossibile eseguire codice dannoso utilizzando i principi di buffer overrun ecc. Tuttavia, il fatto di essere hardware rende difficile l'aggiornamento nel caso in cui si riscontrino piccole stranezze che permettano, ad esempio, attacchi SYN.
