Women are encouraged to believe that they can occupy top jobs in society by the example of other women thriving in their careers. Who better to be a role model for career success than your mother? Paradoxically, this book shows that having a mother as a role model, even for graduates of top universities, does not predict daughters progressing in their own careers. Based on a large, cross-generational qualitative sample, this book offers a timely and original perspective on the debate about gender equality in leadership positions.

It finds that mothers with careers, whilst highly influential in their daughters’ choice of career path, rarely mentor their daughters as they progress. This is partly explained by ‘quiet ambition’ – the tendency of women to be modest about their achievements. Bigger issues are the twin pressures from contemporary motherhood and workplace culture that ironically lead career women’s daughters to believe that being a ‘good mother’ means working part-time. This stalls career progress. Based on a large, cross-generational qualitative sample, this book offers a timely and original perspective on the debate about gender equality in leadership positions.

Mr. Cassis and his Blueberries have screwed me up... by participating in the economic war against Russia, let them now go all the way... let them at least for once be consistent with their logic, for God's sake The diplomats of the rogue Tsar are also rogues, probably members of the post- Soviet secret service. Everything is a matter of and between friends in a supposedly civilized and transparent society, as everywhere else. (abstract)

Penny Brown was left to fend for herself at only thirteen. Her life changed when Brent Holbrook came to town; he cared for her. Then, when she became a young woman, he fell in love with her, or at least Penny thought he loved her. But on one cold, rainy night, when the thunder roared and the fierce flash of lightning lit up the dark sky, was it really Brent she saw? Who was the stranger who chased her down and stole her away? Beaten, bruised, and humiliated, she was caged like a wild animal. Was this her destiny? From the beautiful hills of Missouri to the swamps of the South, from being wild and free to the chains of bondage, who could she trust? Would love set her free or would she die believing the only people she had ever loved betrayed her?
