nidottu
Atomistic Modeling of Materials Failure is an introduction to molecular and atomistic modeling techniques applied to solid fracture and deformation. Focusing on a variety of brittle, ductile, geometrically confined and biological materials, this detailed overview includes computational methods at the atomic scale, and describes how these techniques can be used to model the dynamics of cracks and other deformation mechanisms. A full description of molecular dynamics (MD) as a numerical modeling tool covers the use of classical interatomic potentials and implementation of large-scale massively parallelized computing facilities in addition to the general philosophies of model building, simulation, interpretation and analysis of results. Readers will find an analytical discussion of the numerical techniques along with a review of required mathematical and physics fundamentals. Example applications for specific materials (such as silicon, copper, fibrous proteins) are provided as case studies for each of the techniques, areas and problems discussed. Providing an extensive review of multi-scale modeling techniques that successfully link atomistic and continuum mechanical methods, Atomistic Modeling of Materials Failure is a valuable reference for engineers, materials scientists, and researchers in academia and industry.

It investigates linearly combined motion comp- sated signals and generalizes the well known superposition for bidirectional prediction in B-pictures. The number of superimposed signals and the sel- tion of reference pictures will be important aspects of the discussion. The application oriented part of the book employs this concept to the well known ITU-T Recommendation H.263 and continues with the improvements by superimposed motion-compensated signals for the emerging ITU-T R- ommendation H.264 and ISO/IEC MPEG-4 (Part 10). In addition, it discusses a new approach for wavelet-based video coding. This technology is currently investigated by MPEG to develop a new video compression standard for the mid-term future.

Strategic ICT Planning in Pathology

Strategic ICT Planning in Pathology

There is little doubt that information technology is a major force in transforming healthcare systems: physicians need to have considerable patient data at hand, even if diagnosis and treatment are relatively straightforward. But data are only as useful as ICT—information communication technology—systems make them. Inefficient handling of data can quickly lead to chaos, and possibly to fatalities. Strategic ICT Planning in Pathology illuminates these problems, as well as their potential solutions, based on a unique body of research from Australia. Focusing on core strategic factors such as laboratory information systems capability and effectiveness, business-IT alignment, strategic spending, research and education, and end-user involvement, the book explains why pathology labs lag behind other hospital departments. Survey and focus group findings pinpoint the importance of Strategic Information System Planning (SISP), and its relationship to quality service delivery and an improved bottom line [ok?]. Among the topics covered: Approaches to SISP and IS effectiveness measurement. The OpenLabs project and pathology practice. Development of a framework for SISP. Focus groups: the view from the hospital laboratory, the private pathology lab, and the experts. Key findings and their implications for strategy, planning, and business outcomes. Future research directions, including reverse SISP. Strategic ICT Planning in Pathology is a go-to resource for healthcare administrators and researchers in healthcare management, health policy, and health services research interested in troubleshooting systems, conducting surveys on IS, or better understanding how quality ICT works.
Mobile Authentication

Mobile Authentication

Mobile Authentication: Problems and Solutions looks at human-to-machine authentication, with a keen focus on the mobile scenario. Human-to-machine authentication is a startlingly complex issue. In the old days of computer security-before 2000, the human component was all but disregarded. It was either assumed that people should and would be able to follow instructions, or that end users were hopeless and would always make mistakes. The truth, of course, is somewhere in between, which is exactly what makes this topic so enticing. We cannot make progress with human-to-machine authentication without understanding both humans and machines. Mobile security is not simply security ported to a handset. Handsets have different constraints than traditional computers, and are used in a different way. Text entry is more frustrating, and therefore, it is tempting to use shorter and less complex passwords. It is also harder to detect spoofing. We need to design with this in mind. We also need to determine how exactly to integrate biometric readers to reap the maximum benefits from them. This book addresses all of these issues, and more.
Querying Moving Objects Detected by Sensor Networks

Querying Moving Objects Detected by Sensor Networks

Markus Bestehorn

Springer-Verlag New York Inc.

Declarative query interfaces to Sensor Networks (SN) have become a commodity. These interfaces allow access to SN deployed for collecting data using relational queries. However, SN are not confined to data collection, but may track object movement, e.g., wildlife observation or traffic monitoring. While rational approaches are well suited for data collection, research on Moving Object Databases (MOD) has shown that relational operators are unsuitable to express information needs on object movement, i.e., spatio-temporal queries. Querying Moving Objects Detected by Sensor Networks studies declarative access to SN that track moving objects. The properties of SN present a straightforward application of MOD, e.g., node failures, limited detection ranges and accuracy which vary over time etc. Furthermore, point sets used to model MOD-entities like regions assume the availability of very accurate knowledge regarding the spatial extend of these entities, assuming such knowledge is unrealistic for most SN. This book is the first that defines a complete set of spatio-temporal operators for SN while taking into account their properties. Based on these operators, we systematically investigate how to derive query results from object detections by SN. Finally, process spatio-temporal queries are shown in SN efficiently, i.e., reducing the communication between nodes. The evaluation shows that the measures reduce communication by 45%-89%.

'The most beautiful book I ever read.' – Rune Larsson, ultra-distance runner Markus Torgeby was just 20 years old when he headed off into the remote Swedish forest to live as a recluse and dedicate himself to his one true passion: running. He lived in a tent in the wilderness, braving the harsh Swedish winters – for four years. This is his story. An international bestseller, this extraordinary book is a powerful exploration of running, resilience, loss, and self-discovery. A talented long-distance runner in his teens, Markus Torgeby excelled in training, but often failed inexplicably in competition. Pressurised by his coach and consumed by the suffering of his MS-afflicted mother, he chose to do something that most of us only dream of: escape the modern world. In his stripped-back lifestyle in the woods, surviving with the bare minimum of supplies and enduring extreme cold, he found salvation and ultimately his true direction in life.
Caesarism in the Post-Revolutionary Age

Caesarism in the Post-Revolutionary Age

Markus J. Prutsch

This book is open access and available on www.bloomsburycollections.com. It is funded by Knowledge Unlatched.Debates about the legitimacy and ‘essence’ of political rule and the search for ‘ideal’ forms of government have been at the very heart of political thought ever since antiquity. Caesarism in the Post-Revolutionary Age explores the complex relationship between democracy and dictatorship from the 18th century onwards. More concretely, it assesses how democracy emerged as something compatible with dictatorship, both at the level of political thought and practice. Taking Caesarism – a political alternative somewhere between democracy and dictatorship – as its key concept, the book considers: * To what extent was Caesarism seen as a new post-revolutionary form of rule?* What were the flaws and perils, strengths and promises of Caesaristic regimes?* Can 19th-century Caesarism be characterised as a ‘prelude’ to 20th-century totalitarianism?* What is the legacy and ongoing appeal of Caesarism in the contemporary world? This study will be of value to anyone interested in modern political history, but also contemporary politics.
History of Early Christianity

History of Early Christianity

Markus Öhler

Baylor University Press
2025
pokkari
This comprehensive textbook presents the history of early Christianity from its beginnings to the time of the Second Judean Revolt against the backdrop of the social and historical developments of the early imperial period. Markus Öhler offers a thorough overview of the historical, social, and religious contexts of the Jesus movement in Judea and the various forms of Christian communities and traditions in the Greco-Roman world. From this foundation Öhler reconstructs the origins and trajectory of the Jesus movement, beginning with the ministry of Jesus of Nazareth and the events immediately after his death. Attention is given to the different forms of early Christianity in Judea, Galilee, and Samaria as well as the developments in Syrian Antioch. Special emphasis is placed on the presentation of the ministry of Paul of Tarsus and the social structure of the assemblies of Christ-believers founded by him. An item of central importance for the reconstruction of further developments is the ongoing debate about the significance of the Torah for Christian identity formation. The increasing confrontations with forms of state power are dealt with as well as the further processes of change within early Christianity up to 135 CE. Thus, a coherent overall picture emerges, which is suitable both as an introduction to the history of early Christianity and as a stimulus for further research.
