Beyond Thingification: Helping Your Church Engage in God's Mission
"This book is a road-map for a church to find new vibrancy, new life, new joy. I heartily recommend it."-Tod Bolsinger, VP and Chief of Leadership Formation at Fuller Seminary, author of Canoeing the Mountains: Leading into Uncharted TerritoryBeyond Thingification will help you get clear on your church's mission and help your church do ministry that really matters.Leading churches is so much harder than it used to be. You used to be able to grow a church simply by starting one. Or by improving the preaching or the music or the children's ministry. That's just not the case anymore. We try to attract people to our churches with new programs. Occasionally it works. Most of the time it doesn't.That's frustrating And it makes us feel like failures.Eventually, most of us realize that getting our churches to be bigger and better is not God's top priority. We begin to understand that what God really wants is to heal the world. And we want that, too. We want to help our churches bless our communities and restore shalom in the world. The problem is...it's so hard to know how to do that today. In Beyond Thingification: Helping Your Church Engage in God's Mission, Markus Watson: -Describes the historical background that got us to where we are...-Explores the mission to which all of us have been called, and...-Presents a practical way to discern how God is calling your particular church to participate in the healing of the world. As you and your church read Beyond Thingification and implement what Markus Watson terms "Vocational Connection Groups," you will: -Help your church meaningfully engage in God's mission.-Escape the hamster wheel of doing the same old-but now ineffective-ministry programs.Beyond Thingification will help you move: -From confused about the church's purpose...to clear about the church's mission.-From frustrated about your church's ineffectiveness...to excited about what God is doing through your people.-From distracted by meaningless measures of success...to focused on faithfulness as the true measure of success. If you're ready to get clear on how God is calling your church to engage in the mission of God in your unique context, Beyond Thingification will help you do just that.

Impact Evaluation

Impact Evaluation

In recent years, interest in rigorous impact evaluation has grown tremendously in policy-making, economics, public health, social sciences and international relations. Evidence-based policy-making has become a recurring theme in public policy, alongside greater demands for accountability in public policies and public spending, and requests for independent and rigorous impact evaluations for policy evidence. Frölich and Sperlich offer a comprehensive and up-to-date approach to quantitative impact evaluation analysis, also known as causal inference or treatment effect analysis, illustrating the main approaches for identification and estimation: experimental studies, randomization inference and randomized control trials (RCTs), matching and propensity score matching and weighting, instrumental variable estimation, difference-in-differences, regression discontinuity designs, quantile treatment effects, and evaluation of dynamic treatments. The book is designed for economics graduate courses but can also serve as a manual for professionals in research institutes, governments, and international organizations, evaluating the impact of a wide range of public policies in health, environment, transport and economic development.
Islamabad and the Politics of International Development in Pakistan
This is a highly original account of the design and development of Pakistan's capital city; one of the most iconic and ambitious urban reconstruction projects of the twentieth century. Balancing archival research with fresh, theoretical insights, Markus Daechsel surveys the successes and failures of Greek urbanist Constantinos A. Doxiadis's most ambitious endeavour, Islamabad, analysing how the project not only changed the international order, but the way in which the Pakistani state operated in the 1950s and 1960s. In dissecting Doxiadis's fraught encounter with Pakistani policy makers, bureaucrats and ordinary citizens, the book offers an unprecedented account of Islamabad's place in post-war international development. Daechsel provides new insights into this period and explores the history of development as a charged, transnational venture between foreign consultants and donors on the one side and the postcolonial nation state on the other.

Looking beyond the events of the second intifada and 9/11, this book reveals how targeted killing is intimately embedded in both Israeli and US statecraft, and in the problematic relationship between sovereign authority and lawful violence underpinning the modern state system. It details the legal and political issues raised in targeted killing as it has emerged in practice, including questions of domestic constitutional authority, the use of force in international law, the law of belligerent occupation, the law of targeting and human rights law. The distinctive nature of Israeli and US targeted killing is analysed in terms of the compulsion of legality characteristic of the liberal constitutional state, a compulsion that demands the ability to distinguish between legal 'targeted killing' and extra-legal 'political assassination'. The effect is a highly legalized framework for the extraterritorial killing of designated terrorists that may significantly affect the international law of force.

Political interest is the strongest predictor of 'good citizenship', yet hardly anything is known about it. For the first time in over three decades, here is a study explaining what political interest is, where it comes from, and why it matters. Providing the most thorough description available of political interest in four Western democracies this study analyzes large household panel data sets rarely used in political science to explain how interest develops in people's lives. In an accessible manner, the book's analytical approach pushes applied social scientists to consider how panel data can be used to better understand political behavior. It does so in a way that doesn't gloss over complexities, and explains them in straightforward language. Advanced statistical methods are presented informally, accompanied by graphical illustrations that require no prior knowledge to understand the methods used.
The Block Theory of Finite Group Algebras: Volume 2

The Block Theory of Finite Group Algebras: Volume 2

Markus Linckelmann

Cambridge University Press
2018
sidottu
This is a comprehensive introduction to the modular representation theory of finite groups, with an emphasis on block theory. The two volumes take into account classical results and concepts as well as some of the modern developments in the area. Volume 1 introduces the broader context, starting with general properties of finite group algebras over commutative rings, moving on to some basics in character theory and the structure theory of algebras over complete discrete valuation rings. In Volume 2, blocks of finite group algebras over complete p-local rings take centre stage, and many key results which have not appeared in a book before are treated in detail. In order to illustrate the wide range of techniques in block theory, the book concludes with chapters classifying the source algebras of blocks with cyclic and Klein four defect groups, and relating these classifications to the open conjectures that drive block theory.
