Andre the Giant is known to millions beyond the boundaries of the wrestling ring. From his sheer size of 7' 4" and 500 pounds to his memorable acting role in The Princess Bride, the circumstances of his life and career ensured him recognition wherever he went. Born Andre Rousimmof in a small village in France in 1946 (to parents of average height, as were his four siblings) he suffered from acromegaly, or giantism, which results in an overabundance of growth hormones. By the age of seventeen Andre was 6 ' 7", and continued to grow throughout his life. At the time there was no treatment and life expectancy for this rare condition was forty-five. Determined to make the most of his life, Andre looked for a profession where he could put his size to good use and enjoy each day as if it were his last. As a wrestler he travelled to Canada and then to the USA where, under the aegis of Vince McMahon Sr, he quickly became a superstar, performing to crowds of up to 90,000. Chronicling his life and his phenomenal rise to stardom and featuring input from many who knew and worked with him, this book gives readers a unique insight into the man known and loved across the world as the gentle giant.
William Fernie Buist (1818-1860): The Gentleman of St. Andrews: By His Distant First Cousin
William Fraser Buist was described as a well-read, refined man, and most agreeable companion. He was the fourth child of the esteemed Reverend Dr. George Buist (1779-1860) and by 1842 the last surviving son. He was born at Lawpark in St. Andrews and St. Leonards Parish, Fife and was later educated at the University of St. Andrews in 1832-33 studying the Humanities. Buist would never marry and started his own coal and ironstone company in Airdrie, Lanarkshire called William Fernie Buist and Company with his father's financial backing. The business would eventually falter and he returned to St. Andrews. His attainments in experimental science, his discoveries in mechanics and general knowledge on other important topics, are well known to his old friends, although perhaps not to the world at large. Indeed, even while in Airdrie, he came back to St. Andrews frequently and was a member of the Literary and Philosophical Society of St. Andrews since 1841. However, he was an avid golfer and a member of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club for many years and described as the most successful gentleman player of his day. This then is the narrative of the life and times of William Fernie Buist.

The Immortal of Golf was born in humble circumstances in a weavers cottage. His father, John Morris (1777-1846), was a weaver and letter carrier as the family resided on North Street in the ancient city of St. Andrews. Tom, at the age of fifteen, was apprenticed to the renowned Allan Robertson, champion golfer, unbeaten in his lifetime, and continued his employment as a journeyman. Since being bred in the home of golf and also instructed in the ancient game it is not surprising that Morris began to acquire skillfulness in the sport and began earning distinction on the links. In one of the first public appearances of the young professional he was a partner with Robertson, and played in a match for 400 pounds against William and James Dunn, known as the Dunn Brothers of Musselburgh and Morris and Robertson succeeded on the last day of the match, after being four down with eighteen to play, in winning the match. A match for the ages.

The Illustrious Life of the Very Reverend Dr. George Buist (1779-1860) of St. Andrews: By His Fourth Great Nephew
"We have today to record the death, at St. Andrews, under peculiarly melancholy circumstances, of the venerable second minister of the Established Church there, the Reverend George Buist, D.D., at the advanced age of eighty-four sic] years... Dr. Buist was one of the oldest ordained ministers of the Church of Scotland... held the rank of Moderator of the Assembly of the Church. He was an attentive minister, sincere in the performance of his duties, a thorough business man and his loss will be greatly felt..." Thus ran the front page of the Dundee Advertiser Newspaper of Friday, 20 April 1860 giving a small glimpse of the accomplished life of the Very Reverend Dr. George Buist. Newspapers across Scotland published his obituary and his funeral which was largely attended was equally covered as well. The Reverend Dr. George Buist of St. Andrews was born at the farm of Orkie in Kettle Parish, the fourth child of George Buist (1750-1797), a tenant farmer and proprietor, and Margaret Low (1752-1781). He attended the United College from 1794-97 studying Latin and Greek and made rapid progress in his various studies. In his father's Trust and Disposition of 1796, George received 600 pounds sterling plus 10 pounds sterling a year while at college for defraying the expense of completing his college education. As a youth and well into old age, George Buist was universally regarded with affection for a quality of an unassuming kindness of disposition and temper, which made it impossible for him to initiate or to be irritated. He was ordained to his first charge as minister of Falkland in September of 1802 where he was esteemed as a preacher and was indefatigable in the discharge of his parochial duties. Thence he translated in 1809 but was not admitted until 1813 to the second charge of St. Andrews city and parish in which he laboured for the next 47 years. A year later the University of St. Andrews conferred the degree of Doctor of Divinity on the Reverend Buist. In 1817 he was appointed by the Crown, Professor of Hebrew and Oriental Languages at St. Mary's College, and in 1823 was promoted from the Hebrew Chair to that of Ecclesiastical History which he held this post until his death. Buist was present on Thursday, 18 May 1843 when 121 ministers and 73 elders led by Dr. David Welsh left the Church of Scotland General Assembly at the Church of St. Andrew in Edinburgh and subsequently formed the Free Church of Scotland which was known as "The Disruption of 1843." Five years later Dr. Buist was raised to the highest honour in which the Established Church of Scotland could bestow, unanimously electing him Moderator of the General Assembly. When Reverend Buist was 26 years old he married Margaret Fernie, the daughter of William Fernie, Esq., of Tillywhandland, Angus. They had seven children and by 1818 resided at Lawpark near St. Andrews. Most of his children and wife would pre-decease him with the exception of his daughter Jean (Jane) Buist. His wide knowledge and inquiring mind led him to become one of the original founding members of the Literary and Philosophical Society of St. Andrews and further was largely responsible for establishing the University museum. Buist, as a further testament to his academic stature, was accorded the honour of writing the New Statistical Account entry for the Parish of St. Andrews (1837-38). In 1857 he authored one publication entitled Expository Lectures on Chaps XV.-XIX. of the Acts of the Apostles, which he privately gave to many of his parishioners as a memorial for his ministry. This then is the narrative of the life and times of the Reverend Dr. George Buist.

Bursting Neurons and Fading Memories

Bursting Neurons and Fading Memories

Advances in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) research have been challenging and without major breakthroughs in understanding its pathological basis. The reigning hypothesis suggests AD is the result of extracellular amyloid deposition that seed to form amyloid plaques, which then grow and kill neighboring neurons. However, there are several inconsistencies with this hypothesis, not to mention the inability to show clinical benefit in several failed clinical trials by pharmaceuticals (i.e., from Pfizer, Eli Lilly, etc.), and it is in the field’s best interest to explore and test multiple hypotheses for pathology rather than drive the majority of research on this single amyloid theory. Reviewing many scientifically peer-reviewed publications, this book describes the "Inside-Out" hypothesis on how amyloid escapes the circulatory system through a dysfunctional blood-brain barrier to bind to the alpha 7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor on pyramidal neurons. Over time, excessive amounts of amyloid appear to be internalized, resulting in neuron death and lysis. This simple mechanism readily explains plaque composition, size, shape, and location. Based on the current direction of research in the field, this hypothesis appears years from any research and development.
Intracellular Consequences of Amyloid in Alzheimer's Disease
Consequences of Intracellular Amyloid in Alzheimer’s Disease addresses one of the more currently unresolved aspects confounding Alzheimer’s research, the significance of intraneuronal amyloid. It seeks to explain some of the unresolved questions concerning intracellular amyloid and its origin, entry, and toxicity. Following up on Dr. D’Andrea’s first book, Bursting Neurons and Fading Memories: An Alternative Hypothesis for the Pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s Disease, this book further examines the Inside-Out or Bursting alternative hypothesis of how amyloid escapes the circulatory system to ultimately enter neurons, also examining whether there is a relationship between intracellular amyloid, amyloid plaques, and cognitive impairment. Through a comprehensive explanation of the currently relevant scientific research on intracellular amyloid compiled in this handy reference, readers will better understand the mechanisms that lead to neuron death.

A Minimalist Ontology of the Natural World

A Minimalist Ontology of the Natural World

This book seeks to work out which commitments are minimally sufficient to obtain an ontology of the natural world that matches all of today’s well-established physical theories. We propose an ontology of the natural world that is defined only by two axioms: (1) There are distance relations that individuate simple objects, namely matter points. (2) The matter points are permanent, with the distances between them changing. Everything else comes in as a means to represent the change in the distance relations in a manner that is both as simple and as informative as possible. The book works this minimalist ontology out in philosophical as well as mathematical terms and shows how one can understand classical mechanics, quantum field theory and relativistic physics on the basis of this ontology. Along the way, we seek to achieve four subsidiary aims: (a) to make a case for a holistic individuation of the basic objects (ontic structural realism); (b) to work out a new version of Humeanism, dubbed Super-Humeanism, that does without natural properties; (c) to set out an ontology of quantum physics that is an alternative to quantum state realism and that avoids any ontological dualism of particles and fields; (d) to vindicate a relationalist ontology based on point objects also in the domain of relativistic physics.
The Politics and Aesthetics of Hunger and Disgust

The Politics and Aesthetics of Hunger and Disgust

This study examines how hunger narratives and performances contribute to a reconsideration of neglected or prohibited domains of thinking which only a full confrontation with the body’s heterogeneity and plasticity can reveal. From literary motif or psychosomatic symptom to revolutionary gesture or existential malady, the double crux of hunger and disgust is a powerful force which can define the experience of embodiment. Kafka’s fable of the "Hunger Artist" offers a matrix for the fast, while its surprising last-page revelation introduces disgust as a correlative of abstinence, conscious or otherwise. Grounded in Kristeva’s theory of abjection, the figure of the fraught body lurking at the heart of the negative grotesque gathers precision throughout this study, where it is employed in a widening series of contexts: suicide through overeating, starvation as self-performance or political resistance, the teratological versus the totalitarian, the anorexic harboring of death. In the process, writers and artists as diverse as Herman Melville, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Christina Rossetti, George Orwell, Knut Hamsun, J.M. Coetzee, Cindy Sherman, Pieter Breughel, Marina Abramovic, David Nebreda, Paul McCarthy, and others are brought into the discussion. By looking at the different acts of visceral, affective, and ideological resistance performed by the starving body, this book intensifies the relationship between hunger and disgust studies while offering insight into the modalities of the "dark grotesque" which inform the aesthetics and politics of hunger. It will be of value to anyone interested in the culture, politics, and subjectivity of embodiment, and scholars working within the fields of disgust studies, food studies, literary studies, cultural theory, and media studies.
