The future innkeeper and builder of Cupar's largest hotel establishment was born in humble circumstances on Tuesday, 16 April 1816 at Feddinch in Cameron Parish to Thomas Buist and Elizabeth Christie. In his early youth, he relocated to Cunnoquhie, Monimail Parish, Fifeshire where he worked as a butler. He met and later married Boswell Angus on Friday, 27 April 1838 at Cupar. After his marriage, John Buist relocated to Cupar where he began a small grocery business and later began operating the Albert Inn which he would purchase. John Buist would later lease the Royal Hotel and operate this hotel for 22 years. Additionally, Buist would also lease the Tontine Hotel on Catherine Street in which he also was the innkeeper. He was known to supply the best quality and his uniform civility and obliging manner commanded the respect of his customers. The Tontine Hotel was Cupar's largest hotel establishment in the area and Buist would later re-build the hotel and after 20 years he would retire from the hotel business. He had a passion for horses and purchased many breeds as a Fife horse dealer. John Buist would later purchase Tailabout farm outside of Cupar where he raised his horses and where he eventually retired to. This then is the narrative of the life and times of John Buist, an innkeeper of Cupar.

Thomas Buist will most likely be remembered for his early photography of Fife during the nineteenth-century and saw the market opportunity to turn his passion from a hobby into a commercial success. He advertised himself as an ambrotypist and quickly learned to photograph subjects, buildings and landscapes with grace and ease. However, the road to his success was not easy and he worked many jobs before he realized that his real interest and passion was in photography. Steadily he would grow his business and established his photography branches in Fifeshire. Buist would later be elected as Chief Magistrate of Earlsferry in Elie Parish but did not serve long in the position due to his health. He is considered to be one of the early pioneers of photography for his time. This then is the narrative of the life and times of Thomas Buist, a Fife photographer.

In a letter to his son, Douglas Buist dated Wednesday, 18 April 1888 at Chesterville, Ontario, Canada, Robert Lowe Buist wrote: "I was glad to hear you had got work and that you are well. I would advise you to stick to the place you are in if you suite the boss. You will not gain anything by running around for bigger wages and try and get master of the trade. Be steady and not spend your means foolishly. Try and save a little in case of sickness or want of employment. Times they are very unstable and no permanent outlook and mind you are amidst strangers and every inducement to lead you away into all kinds of vice and wickedness. Without the fear and knowledge of God, you need not depend upon your own strength to shun the evil course of this world and mind. It is by a countenance in well doing to the end, we can look for eternal life in the Kingdom of God. Seek first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness, or the keeping of his commandments, which is the commandment of Jesus." A deeply religious man, Robert Lowe Buist read the Bible every day, once in the morning and once at night. He attended St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Chesterville, Ontario, Canada regularly until the day he died. Upon entering the old church there is a sign which reads: "Enter into His Court with Praise." Truly, Robert Lowe Buist entered into the Lord's Court with Praise all of his long life of 92 years. Robert was born at Feddinch where he began working as a male servant to the Lindsay family. Later he relocated to Lincluden, Terregles Parish, Kirkcudbrightshire where he met Helen Scott Hunter who was also working on the estate. By 1857 they were married in Kirkbean and shortly later left Scotland and resided in the small agricultural town of Chesterville, Dundas County, Ontario where they had eight children. Buist at first was a farmer and later established his own carpentry business and grocery store at Chesterville. He was a well-respected businessman throughout Chesterville and the surrounding area for many years. This then is the narrative of the life and times of Robert Lowe (Law) Buist, an entrepreneur of Chesterville.
George Buist (1746-1818): Tenant Farmer of the Grange of Lindores: By His Distant Third Cousin
The Grange of Lindores farm, situated in Abdie Parish, Fifeshire has been tenanted by members of the Buist family for at least two generations. Indeed, the first known tenant farmer was George Buist (1709- ), whose children were all born there beginning in 1743 with the birth of Jean Buist. His son, George (1746-1818), would assume the tenancy of the Grange of Lindores sometime after his father's death, although the exact date cannot be determined due to the lack of a death record of George Buist (1709- ). George would never marry and the tenancy of the Grange of Lindores would not be passed down after him on that side of the family again. However, years later a distant kinsman of the family, George Dun (1800-1874), would once again farm these lands. This then is the narrative of the life and times of George Buist, the tenant farmer of the Grange of Lindores.

The Immortal of Golf was born in humble circumstances in a weavers cottage. His father, John Morris (1777-1846), was a weaver and letter carrier as the family resided on North Street in the ancient city of St. Andrews. Tom, at the age of fifteen, was apprenticed to the renowned Allan Robertson, champion golfer, unbeaten in his lifetime, and continued his employment as a journeyman. Since being bred in the home of golf and also instructed in the ancient game it is not surprising that Morris began to acquire skillfulness in the sport and began earning distinction on the links. In one of the first public appearances of the young professional he was a partner with Robertson, and played in a match for 400 pounds against William and James Dunn, known as the Dunn Brothers of Musselburgh and Morris and Robertson succeeded on the last day of the match, after being four down with eighteen to play, in winning the match. A match for the ages.

This book examines incrementalism as a policymaking process in the USA. It provides an overview of incrementalism as a theoretical concept, assesses historical and contemporary attitudes toward it, and considers it as a viable alternative to rationality. The book argues that incrementalism is both an inevitable and desirable method of policymaking, despite seeming ill suited to the current system of highly ideological and polarized political parties. It also advocates a return to realism in which policymakers on both the left and right recognize the superiority of incrementalism, as well as a new system of partisan incrementalism through which political parties compete by offering distinctive incremental alternatives on major policy issues. The book will appeal to scholars and students of American public policy, public administration and politics.
