The cleft lip, alveolus, and/or palate is the most common congenital malformation of the face. The annual incidence ranges from 1/2,000 to 1/5,000 births. Non-syndromic clefts are believed to be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Factors such as exposure to teratogenic substances during pregnancy. Cleft lip and palate are seen twice as commonly in boys. The lip and alveolus anomaly is paramedian and is located at the philtrum level for the lip and at the level of the upper lateral incisors for the alveolar ridge. The diagnosis is clinical. Management requires multidisciplinary medical and surgical intervention from birth until the end of development. The oral disease represents a major health problem among patients with orofacial clefts. The prevalence and severity of oral disease among this group are higher when compared to the general population. Children and adults with cleft lip and palate are at increased risk for the development of gingival and periodontal diseases. This book analyses and compares the oral hygiene and periodontal status in patients with clefts of the palate (CP) and patients with unilateral cleft lip, palate and alveolus (UCLPA).

Oral Diseases: Grading and Staging focuses on the different types of grading and staging system of soft tissue diseases affecting the head and neck, with emphasis on premalignant and malignant lesions. This work has been prepared keeping post graduate students in mind as it provides easy access to the concisely collected information. It further incorporates the ICD disease classification and hence is a timesaver for the post graduate. Although primarily for post graduate students it is an equally helpful book for graduates, academicians and clinicians. We look forward to suggestions that may help in improving the book in future.

Oral epithelial dysplasias are potentially malignant disorders characterized by varying degree of cellular atypia. The accurate diagnosis and treatment of epithelial dysplasia is an important factor which can decrease the number of cases of carcinoma developing from potentially malignant disorder. It can also help to achieve better survival rates in patients prone to carcinoma and in improving the current rate of prognosis of oral cancer cure rates. An effort is being made now a days by using molecular and genetic markers which can help in early detection of lesion that are at great risk of malignant transformation.

There is more to good health than just a physically healthy body: a healthy person should also have a healthy mind. A person with a healthy mind should be able to think clearly, should be able to solve the various problems faced in life, should enjoy good relations with friends, colleagues at work and family, and should feel spiritually at ease and bring happiness to others in the community. It is these aspects of health that can be considered as mental health. Even though we talk about the mind and body as if they were separate, in reality they are like two sides of the same coin. They share a great deal with each other, but present a different face to the world around us. If one of the two is affected in any way, then the other will almost certainly also be affected. Just because we think about the mind and body separately, it does not mean that they are independent of each other. Just as the physical body can fall ill, so too can the mind. Disturbances of the body image are characteristics of psychosomatic disorders. The body image can be conceived as part of the self-concept that describes attitudes and representations of the body and its capacities.

I am pleased to present to users the Edition of ORAL BIOFILM "SYMBIOTIC TO PATHOGENIC INTERACTION AND ASSOCIATED DISEASES" for Dental students with thoroughly updated contents. The book attempts to incorporate the knowledge about the microorganism that harms the intraoral soft & hard tissues and also deals how to diagnose and to prevent the future loss of tooth supporting structures. The volume of literature available in dentistry today is vast. However, during both our graduation as well as postgraduation, we always felt the need for a book which would help us to revise and update our knowledge. Emphasis is laid upon the language which is simple, understanding and exclusively designed for undergraduates, postgraduates, practitioners and teachers in the field. I await the response of this first edition, which would improve the next editions to come.
