Michael Perry, a leading constitutional theorist, here continues his inquiry into the role of morality in American public life that began with his critically acclaimed Morality, Politics, and Law. In this sequel, he addresses the proper relation of moral convictions to the politics of a morally pluralistic society, focusing on religious morality. Perry devises a theory of `ecumenical politics' in which moral values can be brought to bear in a productive way on political deliberation. `There is no question in my mind that it will have a large, diverse, and eager audience.' Milner S. Ball, University of Georgia Law School.

In the modern period of American constitutional law--the period since the U.S. Supreme Court outlawed racially segregated public schooling in Brown v. Board of Education (1954)--there has been a persistent and vigorous debate in the United States about whether the Court has merely been enforcing the Constitution or whether, instead, in the guise of enforcing the Constitution, the Court has really been usurping the legislative prerogative of making political choices about controversial issues. In this book, Professor Perry carefully disentangles and then thoughtfully addresses the various fundamental issues at the heart of the controversy: What is the argument for "judicial review"? What approach to constitutional interpretation should inform the practice of judicial review? How large or small a role should the Court play in bringing the interpreted Constitution to bear in resolving constitutional conflicts? To what extent are the Court's most controversial modern decisions--for example, decisions about racial segregation, discrimination based on sex, abortion, and homosexuality--sound; to what extent are they problematic? The Constitution in the Courts is a major contribution to one of the most fundamental controversies in modern American politics and law.

Among American religious believers there is disagreement about many fundamental religious/moral matters. Because the United States is both such a religious country and such a religiously pluralistic country, the issue of the proper role of religion in politics is extremely important to political debate. In Religion in Politics, Michael Perry addresses a fundamental question: what role may religious arguments play, if any, either in public debate about what political choices to make or as a basis of political choice? He is principally concerned with political choices that ban or otherwise disfavour one or another sort of human conduct based on the view that the conduct is immoral. He divides the controversy into two debates: the constitutionally proper role of religious arguments in politics, and a related, but distinct, debate about the morally proper role. Perry concludes that political choices about the morality of human conduct should not be based on religion. The newest work by one of the most important constitutional theorists writing today, Religion in Politics is sure to spark a new debate on the subject.

In his new book, Michael Perry evaluates the grave charge that the modern Supreme Court has engineered a "judicial usurpation of politics". In particular, Perry inquires which of the several Fourteenth Amendment conflicts---the conflicts over race segregation, race-based affirmative action, sex-based discrimination, homosexuality, abortion, and physician-assisted suicide---have been resolved as they should have been resolved. Perry lays the necessary groundwork for his inquiry by addressing both questions of constitutional theory and questions of constitutional history.

A finalist for the Barry Award for Best Thriller Edgar Award-winning author Thomas Perry writes thrillers that move "almost faster than a speeding bullet" (Wall Street Journal). The Old Man is his latest whip-smart standalone novel. To all appearances, Dan Chase is a harmless retiree in Vermont with two big mutts and a grown daughter he keeps in touch with by phone. But most sixty-year-old widowers don't have multiple driver's licenses, savings stockpiled in banks across the country, and a bugout kit with two Beretta Nanos stashed in the spare bedroom closet. Most have not spent decades on the run. Thirty-five years ago, as a young hotshot in army intelligence, Chase was sent to Libya to covertly assist a rebel army. When the plan turned sour, Chase reacted according to his own ideas of right and wrong, triggering consequences he could never have anticipated. And someone still wants him dead because of them. Just as he had begun to think himself finally safe, Chase must reawaken his survival instincts to contend with the history he has spent his adult life trying to escape. Armed mercenaries, spectacularly crashed cars, a precarious love interest, and an unforgettable chase scene through the snow--this is lethal plotting from one of the best in crime fiction.
