From the critically acclaimed author of Tallgrass comes a powerful novel about an unlikely friendship between two women and the secrets they've kept in order to survive life in a rugged Colorado mining town. It's 1936 and the Great Depression has taken its toll. Up in the high country of the snow-covered Rocky Mountains, eighty-six-year-old Hennie Comfort has lived in Middle Swan, Colorado, since before it was Colorado. When she first meets seventeen-year-old Nit Spindle, Hennie is drawn to the grieving young girl. Nit and her husband have come to this small mining town in search of work, but the loneliness and loss Nit feels are almost too much to bear. One day she notices an old sign that reads prayers for sale in front of Hennie's house. Hennie doesn't actually take money for her prayers, never has, but she invites the skinny girl in anyway. The harsh conditions of life that each has endured create an instant bond, and a friendship is born, one in which the deepest of hardships are shared and the darkest of secrets are confessed. Sandra Dallas has created an unforgettable tale of a friendship between two women, one with surprising twists and turns, and one that is ultimately a revelation of the finest parts of the human spirit.

Charles Darwin and the Question of Evolution

The publication of Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species in 1859 is widely regarded as a turning point in knowledge of the natural world. But Darwin's theory of natural selection was not developed in a vacuum; rather, it represents the culmination of an enormous shift in scientific and popular opinion on the subject of species mutability from the late eighteenth century onward. Through her insightful introduction and engaging collection of documents, Sandra Herbert examines this era of scientific thought and the startling discoveries that led Darwin and others to the conclusion that life has evolved. A wide range of documents from over a dozen authors, and excerpts from Darwin's own notebooks and On the Origin of Species -- offer a fascinating glimpse into this crucial era of scientific thought.

From the New York Times bestselling author of Prayers for Sale comes a powerful novel about the intersection of redemption, forgiveness, and love. . . . On a spring afternoon in 1920, Swandyke--a small town near Colorado's Tenmile Range--is changed forever. Just moments after four o'clock, a large split of snow separates from Jubilee Mountain high above the tiny hamlet and hurtles down the rocky slope, enveloping everything in its path. Meet the residents whose lives this tragedy touches: Lucy and Dolly Patch, two sisters long estranged by a shocking betrayal. Joe Cobb, Swandyke's only black resident, whose love for his daughter forces him to flee Alabama. Then there's Grace Foote, who hides secrets and scandal that belie her genteel fa ade. And Minder Evans, a Civil War veteran who considers cowardice his greatest sin. Finally, there's Essie Snowball, born Esther Schnable to conservative Jewish parents, who now works as a prostitute and hides her child's parentage from the world. Fate, chance, and perhaps divine providence all collide in the everyday lives of these people. And ultimately, no one is without sin, no one's soul is whiter than snow, and no one is without the need for forgiveness. A quintessential American voice and a writer of exquisite historical detail, Sandra Dallas illuminates the resilience of the human spirit in her newest novel.

This up-to-date bibliography on business communications which, unlike any other, also indexes the availability of sample documents and other learning aids has been compiled with students, faculty, librarians, and other working professionals in mind. It combines research sources with an annotated bibliography that emphasizes practical solutions to business and technical communications problems. The topical arrangement facilitates the prompt location of materials that emphasize specific communication skills such as editing, interviewing, and public speaking. The extremely fine-tuned subject index details the locations of all sources on a particular topic and specific kinds of assistance, such as outlines and sample documents. The guide is composed of two major divisions of three chapters each. Part I, the research handbook, assists researchers who need answers to basic questions: chapter 1 details standard reference sources including dictionaries, bibliographies, and directories; chapter 2 lists research tools such as indexes and online data bases; and chapter 3 cites additional important resources including grammar hot lines, national associations, and research institutions. Part II, a topical bibliography of books published between 1980 and 1988, facilitates the location of outlines, guidelines, examples, workbooks, sample documents, and similar forms of assistance. Chapters four through six are devoted to three skill areas: general skills such as editing, graphics and visuals, and word processing; written documents such as abstracts, newsletters and feasibility studies; and oral products such as interviewing, presentations, and workshops and seminars. Three distinct indexes provide access to this wealth of information by name, title, and subject. Better Said and Clearly Written should be made available not only to business and technical libraries but to academic and public libraries as well. It will be an indispensible tool for technical writers, small business owners, corporate personnel, and anyone wishing to improve their oral and written communication skills.

Ethnic Periodicals in Contemporary America provides easy and accessible information on 290 ethnic-interest periodicals, 32 of which have multiple ethnic-group listings, published in the United States. The basic information about the structure of the publication is presented in an easy-to-read data base format followed by a narrative about the editorial content/focus of the publication. In addition to this information, a list of the non-responding periodicals, complete with known addresses, is provided, and when appropriate, non-deliverable questionnaire responses are also included in this text. This guide is structured to provide basic information about the framework of the publication in a database format. This includes information of some 30 areas of the periodicals' publication structure and policies. Further information about the editorial content and focus of the periodicals is provided in the description of the publication. The description is based on information provided by editors and/or publishers who responded to a comprehensive questionnaire designed to find out about each publication. The questionnaire is also included in this book. In many of the publications, editors and/or publishers have provided valuable information to help contributors with writing skills and submission of manuscripts. Beyond providing information about targeting ethnic-interest periodicals and groups, this book contains the most comprehensive listing of ethnic periodicals in the United States, thus making it easier for other researchers to focus in on such areas as linguistics, immigration and assimilation into existing cultures through the periodicals, anthropology, geography, genealogy, social and political history through the popular medium of the periodicals, and many other areas of interest.
Birth Alternatives

Birth Alternatives

A woman's childbirth care choices have a profound effect on her pregnancy and childbirth experience. Today, some pregnant women have three different options to choose from: obstetrical care and a hospital birth, a midwife-assisted birth in a hospital, and a midwife-assisted birth at an out-of-hospital birthing center. By using a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods, this volume examines how and why 200 women made their choices, how satisfied they were with the care they received, and the impact of their choices on the availability of options in the future. Although most women in the U.S. still choose an obstetrician and a hospital setting, the number of women who choose to be assisted by a Certified Nurse Midwife is growing, with the result that this profession is acquiring new strength and jurisdiction over childbirth care.

Over the past fifty years, children's literature has freed itself of many traditional restrictions and become a field of exciting innovations in both form and content. The new status of children's literature has been accompanied by an unprecedented growth in research on children's literature internationally. This volume explores the many changes that have taken place in the past half-century in children's literature, showing how those changes reflect our rapidly-changing world and attempt to prepare children for the new millennium. Among the issues discussed are the shifting boundaries between children's literature and adult literature, postmodern trends, paradigm shifts, national literatures, and the reconceptualization of the past.
Bleep! Censoring Rock and Rap Music

Bleep! Censoring Rock and Rap Music

Examining the various boundaries of American artistic tolerance, chapters address the societal and legal responses to rock and rap music. Artistic expression has historically clashed with mainstream views, resulting in apprehension acted upon internally and externally, especially when expression is aimed toward children or young adults. This work studies the mass media content and programming in network television, Rolling Stone magazine, and the New York Times reviews and spot news concerning rock and rap music. The National Endowment for the Arts, the FCC, and the music industry's internal responses to parents and adults are discussed as well. Inhibitions and censoring, it is argued, stem from adult concerns for a healthy functioning society and from anxiety about the impact of sexual explicitness and uncontrolled behavioral expression on adolescents. This work attempts to explain why societal intolerance has a pattern of limiting the lyrics and sounds of rock and rap music.Uniquely combining both societal and legal viewpoints on censorship of America's popular music culture, these essays address issues of concern to various scholars including those studying mass media, censorship, and American popular culture. Legal appendices are included as useful references, such as the National Endowments for the Arts Obscenity and Rejections Sections.

In the period between the Civil War and World War I, German universities provided North American women with opportunities in graduate and professional training that were not readily available to them at home. This training allowed women to compete to a greater degree with men in increasingly professionalized fields. In return for such opportunities, these women played a key role in opening up German universities to all women. Many devoted the rest of their lives to creating better research and graduate opportunities for other women, forever changing the course of higher education in North America. This study provides accounts of the incredible barriers encountered by these first women students in Europe. It documents their perseverance and hard-won triumphs and includes as well the stories of the progressive men who mentored them and fought for their rights to higher education. Never before has documentation of so many North American students at German-speaking universities been included in one volume. This collection of stories from women across disciplines makes it possible to assess the truly remarkable nature of their combined contributions to higher education and research in North America and Europe.

Food in Colonial and Federal America

The success of the new settlements in what is now the United States depended on food. This book tells about the bounty that was here and how Europeans forged a society and culture, beginning with help from the Indians and eventually incorporating influences from African slaves. They developed regional food habits with the food they brought with them, what they found here, and what they traded for all around the globe. Their daily life is illuminated through descriptions of the typical meals, holidays, and special occasions, as well as their kitchens, cooking utensils, and cooking methods over an open hearth. Readers will also learn how they kept healthy and how their food choices reflected their spiritual beliefs. This thorough overview endeavors to cover all the regions settled during the Colonial and Federal. It also discusses each immigrant group in turn, with attention also given to Indian and slave contributions. The content is integral for U.S. history standards in many ways, such as illuminating the settlement and adaptation of the European settlers, the European struggle for control of North America, relations between the settlers from different European countries, and changes in Native American society resulting from settlements.

This revealing portrait of the real Paris Hilton gets underneath the hype and hate, the glamour and greed.Unlike other biographies that range from the exposé to the gushing, Paris Hilton: A Biography is both detailed and objective. It covers Paris's checkered family history, her privileged yet surprisingly unassuming upbringing, and her explosion with sister Nicky as "It Girls" on the international social scene. Readers will learn how her family influenced her, why she made the decision to step into the limelight, and why she continues today, despite her many critics and setbacks. Each chapter of the biography provides an in-depth view of a specific aspect of Paris's life: her relationship with men and the media, how she turned herself around emotionally and projected a new image, and what makes her such a smart businesswoman. The book also looks at darker moments, including the sex tape, her jail time, and her publicity faux pas. In the end, readers will understand what makes this complex young woman tick—and have a better sense of what it is like to walk a mile in her Manolo Blahniks.
