Today, the final exam at the end of Secondary School is the main gateway to further education, training, and jobs in Ireland. With an enhanced level of completion, the importance of this exam has come sharply into focus. The emphasis is now swaying towards continuous assessment; you, as a student, have an opportunity to develop, enhance and show off your skills during the year and work done will be aggregated towards your final mark. I am sure you would prefer to have some marks in the bag heading into the final exam as opposed to having all the emphasis on one day, similar to what is currently happening in subjects like History, Construction Studies and Geography for example. Air Commodore Peter Malam 'Pete' Brothers CBE, DSO, DFC, and Bar (1917-2008) was one of the most heroic and highly praised pilots of the Second World War. Decorated extensively, he secured a total of 16 'kills' over the course of the conflict, with 10 of these occurring during the Battle of Britain. Pivotal moments in his career include the time, in August 1940, when his flight encountered around a hundred enemy aircraft, including Messerschmitt 110's; he led the flight in attack against them, and soon found himself in a stalled position, out of which he spun, only to be confronted by a Dornier 215, which he shot down, before later destroying a Messerschmitt 109. Scores of these kind of risky manoeuvres and winning victories punctuated a career defined by great courage, leadership and initiative in the face of fierce opposition. This new and engaging biography profiles a pilot who, until now, hasn't been the subject of such a thorough book-length study. Wolfgang Luth was one of only seven men to win Germany s highest combat decoration. He operated in almost every theatre of the undersea war from Norway to the Indian Ocean and he was the second most successful German U-boat ace in World War II. Luth is credited with sinking 47 Allied ships and a submarine a record topped only by Otto Kretschmer. In 1944, after 16 war patrols, including one that lasted a record 203 days at sea, he was named commandant of the German naval academy and, aged 30, became the youngest commandant of the German Naval Academy. Until the publication of this comprehensive study his accomplishments were overshadowed by other aces. To correct the neglect, Jordan Vause provides an entertaining, authoritative biography. Vause was intrigued after seeing a portrait of Luth as a midshipman on display and set out to learn all he could, tracking down some of Luth s crewmen and fellow U-boat commanders. Reinhard ‘Teddy’ Suhren fired more successful torpedo shots than any other man during the Second World War and he was the first junior officer to be awarded the Knight’s Cross for his achievements. However, this is not the reason Teddy remains legendary within the U-boat world. Fondly remembered for his good humour and leadership skills, he was also rebellious by nature, and frequently in trouble with higher authority. Despite his refusal to conform to the rigid thought-patterns of National Socialism, his operational successes protected him, and he found himself accepted in the highest circles of power in Germany, staying as a guest at Martin Bormann’s house – and on one occasion even dancing with Eva Braun. He was also one of the first to publish his reminiscences, his account being typically forthright and unconventional. Teddy Suhren died in 1984 but interest in his career was revitalised by the discovery of a cache of photographs documenting one of his operations in U-564, published with great success in 2004 as U-Boat War Patrol by Lawrence Paterson. Paterson's collaborator, Frank James, was the man who discovered the significance of the photographs, and his interest in the project led to his translation of Suhren’s own book.
