A Republic in Time

Building a nation by envisioning the future. The development of the American nation has typically been interpreted in terms of its expansion through space, specifically its growth west-ward. In this innovative study, Thomas Allen posits time, not space, as the most significant territory of the young nation. He argues that beginning in the nineteenth century, the actual geography of the nation became less important, as Americans imagined the future as their true national territory.Allen explores how transformations in the perception of time shaped American conceptions of democratic society and modern nationhood. He focuses on three ways of imagining time: the romantic historical time that prevailed at the outset of the nineteenth century, the geological ""deep time"" that arose as widely read scientific works displaced biblical chronology with a new scale of millions of years of natural history, and the technology-driven ""clock time"" that became central to American culture by century's end. Allen analyzes cultural artifacts ranging from clocks and scientific treatises to paintings and literary narratives to show how Americans made use of these diverse ideas about time to create competing visions of American nationhood.

Degrees Of Freedom: Living In Dynamic Boundaries

Drawing especially on insights emerging from studies of the cellular networks formed by fungi, this book describes the fundamental indeterminacy that enables life forms to thrive in and create inconstant circumstances. It explains how indeterminacy arises from counteraction between associative and dissociative processes at the reactive interfaces between living systems and their surroundings. It stresses the relevance of these processes to understanding the dynamic contexts within which living systems of all kinds — including human societies-explore for, use up, conserve and recycle sources of energy.By focusing on dynamic boundaries, the book counterbalances the discretist view that living systems are assembled entirely from building-block-like units — individuals and genes — that can be freely sifted, as opposed to channeled, by natural selection. It also shows how the versatility that enables life forms to proliferate in rich environments, whilst minimizing losses in restrictive environments, depends on capacities for error and co-operation within a fluid, non-hierarchical power structure. Understanding this point yields a more compassionate, less competitive and less self-centred outlook on life's successes and failures.

Emerging technology and online environments have contributed to significant growth in the online knowledge market and entrepreneurs have begun to build businesses in the digital arena selling knowledge as a product. This study addressed the question of how personality traits impact the consumer's perceived value of online paid knowledge (OPK) products. The purpose of this qualitative analysis was to address how personality traits impact consumers' perceptions of value with online paid knowledge (OPK) products. Further, exploration of how these constructs form patterns that explain the perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use of OPK products, specifically online courses, of consumers in the U.S. from 2018-2021. Using a case study design, the conceptual framework for the study included the technology acceptance model (TAM) and the fivefactor model (FFM) of personality traits. The researcher analyzed responses from 22semi-structured interviews through an inductive thematic analysis approach.
Security And Nationalism In The Indian Ocean
I thank Peter Duignan for suggesting that the book be done and The Hoover Institution on War, Peace, and Revolution for a grant that facilitated the early stages of research. Other grant funds were generously provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities and by Johnson State College, which also allowed me to run off with the stipend on academic leave. I obtained invaluable advice and access to special resources at the Centre d'Etudes et de Recherches des Pays de l'Ocean lndien (CERSOI) at the Universite d'Aix-Marseille in Aix•en•Provence and at the Centre de Documentation et de Recherches sur I' Asie du Sud-Est et le Monde lnsulindien (CeDRASEMI) in Sophia Antipolis, Valbonne, France; particular thanks go to President Louis Favoreu, Professor Jean Benoist, Marc Besson and Mme. Besson at Aix. Similar courtesies were extended by Mme. Lauret at the Centre de Documentation de l'Ocean Indien at St. Denis in La Reunion and by archivists and librarians in all of the islands, France, the United States, and Montreal. Thanks go to Paul Gallagher and to Linda Kramer of the Johnson State College Library for finding and smoothing paths.
Security And Nationalism In The Indian Ocean
The five island societies of the Western Indian Ocean—Madagascar, Mauritius, the Seychelles, the Comoros, and the French Overseas Department of Réunion—have retained distinctive national characters while cultivating regional cohesion and the establishment of a Zone of Peace. In this study, Dr. Allen places the nations of the maritime Latin Quarter

In 1877, Maximilienne Carpentier died after being shipwrecked off the Danish coast. Emilie Carpentier, however, survived the tragedy, and suddenly this diminutive cousin of the enigmatic Max finds herself thrust center-stage as the drama surrounding her mid-Atlantic island and its potential for evil unfolds. But Emilie’s troubles aren’t only external. Forced to this out-of-the-way place by circumstances beyond her control, she meets duty more than she can bear, temptation greater than she ever envisaged, and hope more fulfilling than any that has yet entered her life. From a dread of personal relationships to the fear of fear itself, this young woman finds herself coming of age in every aspect as she sways between raw physical passion and deep emotional insight. Answering the need for a sequel to The Islander, the author now gives us rare insight into the mind—and heart—of a woman.

Esidarap: a city where wealth and political clout rule and pride abounds. The Council of Five has favorable trade agreements with every town in sight, an army on tap to enforce their wishes and food for a thousand years. Why, even the elusive mountain folk are under their thumb. Or are they? Well, apparently not, for as the Council members are about to discover, not everyone they try to get the better of rolls over and allows them to have their own way. Now the disenfranchised make a stand against illegal acquisition, and the results are quite devastating, for with one calculated move the metropolis is threatened, not simply with poverty, but extinction. Into this simple fantasy the author has woven the timeless themes of war and peace, greed and generosity, pride and humility, love and indifference, giving us an enduring—and heart-warming—tale.
