With Greater Mughals, the author has completed his study of the Gurgani dynasty (which was how the Mughals described themselves). He has already covered the later emperors in The Forgotten Mughals. The Europeans spoke of them as the ‘Great Mughals’, and undoubtedly, the first six of the house fully deserve that appellation. No European dynasty, before or since, has produced such remarkable rulers. Two of them wrote remarkably frank autobiographies, which can still be read with pleasure today. The splendour of their court, their apparently limitless power, and incomparable wealth became legendary, and it would be difficult to find anywhere in Europe’s numerous kingdoms, a parallel to Akbar who occupies, indisputably, the first place amongst the rulers of India. While the reigns of the first two padishahs were short, from the accession of Akbar to the death of Aurangzeb we have a span of 150 years, a period sufficient to firmly ground the dynasty.
Already as a teenager I had become acquainted with rheophytes, during swimming exercises between Utrecht and Bunnik in the 'Kromme Rijn', an ancient, then canalized course of the river Rhine, where a submerged waterplant occurred gregariously in dense stands on the sandy bottom. In the rather swift current of the then very clear water, its long, linear, ribbon shaped blades floated gracefully in serpentine fashion. We never found it in flower. At times the stands became so dense that the 'rugt' (all subaquatic weed growth) was mowed by scythe from shallow-bottom 'punters', in order to remove this obstacle to water traffic. It was never seen in stagnant water of the ditches in the meadows of the valley. After entering the University, with the purpose of devoting my further life to the study of botany, my attention was roused by the research subject of our professor F.A.F.C. Went, who became my tutor and mental father. As far as his free time was available - and that was precious little because he primarily devoted himself to tuition of students and promovendi besides administration of the botany department - he tried to study the morphology, anatomy and physiology of the Podostemaceae, of which tropical cascade plants he had made large collections and observations in Surinam.
The aim of this work is to initiate a systematic study of those properties of Banach space complexes that are stable under certain perturbations. A Banach space complex is essentially an object of the form 1 op-l oP +1 ... --+ XP- --+ XP --+ XP --+ ... , where p runs a finite or infiniteinterval ofintegers, XP are Banach spaces, and oP : Xp ..... Xp+1 are continuous linear operators such that OPOp-1 = 0 for all indices p. In particular, every continuous linear operator S : X ..... Y, where X, Yare Banach spaces, may be regarded as a complex: O ..... X ~ Y ..... O. The already existing Fredholm theory for linear operators suggested the possibility to extend its concepts and methods to the study of Banach space complexes. The basic stability properties valid for (semi-) Fredholm operators have their counterparts in the more general context of Banach space complexes. We have in mind especially the stability of the index (i.e., the extended Euler characteristic) under small or compact perturbations, but other related stability results can also be successfully extended. Banach (or Hilbert) space complexes have penetrated the functional analysis from at least two apparently disjoint directions. A first direction is related to the multivariable spectral theory in the sense of J. L.
The need for climatological data of the North Sea has increased during the past years. The increase in offshore and recreational activities can benefit greatly from such data. In order to meet this need weather observations made by ships and lightvessels in the North Sea have been processed extensively, which has resulted in a large number of tables, charts, etc. with climatological data. This publication gives a selection of these data, in which the emphasis lies on wind and wave data. In addition, some characteristic data on air and sea tempera ture, cloud cover, precipitation, visibility and sea level pressure are given. With regard to the observations of the lightvessels the publication can be consi dered as a continuation of earlier work. It also concludes the era of observations made by crew on board lightvessels, which gradually ended in the 1970's. The observations on fixed platforms which are now replacing the observations of the lightvessels are of a quite different character. The data are based on observations made on board lightvessels during the period 0 1949 -1980 and voluntary observing ships in the area between 51 ON and 60 N during the period 1961-1980. The observations of the lightvessels have been compared with those published for earlier periods (1859 -1883, 1884 -1909 and 1910 -1940).
