F.M.R.L. – Footnotes, Mirages, Refrains and Leftovers of Writing Sound
Listening into writing, reading into writing take shape in F.M.R.L. through a collection of short texts, fragments and 'deranged essays', with attention to pacing and linguistic derives. An archive of books, notebooks, events and records prompts the texts in these pages, responding to encounters with Michel Leiris's autobiographical fictions; concerts and events at Cafe Oto and the Swedenborg House in London; visits to museums such as the Pitt Rivers in Oxford and exhibitions such as Ice Age Art at the British Museum, among the others. F.M.R.L. is a book constructed across sonic patterns, assonance, repetitions, comprising texts that intermittently drift from sense to sound and to nonsense and back. A flip from the immateriality of sound to the sounds of letters and words as material, a call from reading to voicing.
Feminist Critical Theory in Global Political Economy

Feminist Critical Theory in Global Political Economy

Daniela Tepe-Belfrage

Rowman Littlefield International

sidottu
Why should feminists engage with critical theory? Can feminists overcome the patriarchal problems within current notions of social totality? What can a feminist critical theory tell us about the gendered inequality of contemporary global issues? This book highlights how critical theory argues against relations of domination and advocates for emancipation as it envisions a social totality that goes beyond the particular spheres of society that feminist work usually concentrates upon. Specifically, it explores how the notion of social totality is developed within the work of Horkheimer and Adorno, though it problematizes the patriarchal assumptions that underlie the domination they envisage in society. The book then goes on develop a feminist notion of social totality, explaining how a critical engagement with research on primitive accumulation, social reproduction and intersectionality, which examines gendered division of labour, can shed light on the disproportionate effects of the financial crisis and austerity on women.

Ageing between Cultures

Ageing between Cultures

Daniela Cosmini-Rose

Troubador Publishing

This interdisciplinary volume addresses the multiple dimensions of the ageing experience of Italian migrants in South Australia by revisiting the concepts of health and wellbeing, intergenerational family care-giving practices and the role of language and culture in the ageing process. This collection of essays highlights the importance of a multi-layered approach, which recognises that elders, their families and their communities are closely intertwined and need to be explored in relation to one another. Older Italian immigrants are one of the largest ethnic ageing groups in Australia, but their experiences of ageing in a foreign land have been largely overlooked. This volume addresses the multiple dimensions of the ageing experience of the Italian elderly by revisiting the concepts of health and culture in the ageing process. It analyses how the population gathers the information they need for their everyday lives in an era when governments and businesses use the Internet and mobile devices to disseminate information about services and products. It also examines the home as the locus and symbol of migratory goals and host country experiences of first-generation Italian-Australians and discusses how food habits are intricately bound up with life experiences and personal identities and how they remain psychologically and physiologically significant in their later lives. At a time when the world’s population is ageing at a rapid rate, this comprehensive study on an elderly migrant minority, their families and communities, is a valuable contribution to the literature of migration and ageing and serves as a framework for the development of aged care models for other migrant communities. To date there has been very little research undertaken to explore the issues related to the ageing of the Italian community in Australia, and even few studies that are specific to South Australia. Ageing between Cultures aims to address this.
Procreation and Population in Historical Social Science
The book sees procreation, the forgotten basis of population dynamics, and its macrohistorical results through the lenses of world-system analysis in a nondogmatic way. This interdisciplinary book sheds light on the historical paths leading to the current unprecedented numbers of humans on the globe, fuelled by the capitalist demand for labor and mediated by the role of women in society. Procreation and Population is a critical text, opposing the current disciplinary fences that demonstrably hinder our comprehension of social phenomena. Attentive to gender relations, the book boldly tracks “the big picture” of population dynamics and its most reliable theories in times of postmodernist taboos on generalizations and on the search for the historical laws of human society.

Across the West, the explosion of social movement activity since the late 1960s has constituted a “participatory revolution” that has posed profound challenges for formal political parties. Through an analysis of new interviews, institutional documents, and a host of other largely unexploited sources, Daniela R. Piccio provides a rich and empirically grounded exploration of the wide-ranging responses to these movements. Focusing on Italy and the Netherlands since the 1970s, Party Responses to Social Movements demonstrates how political parties have incorporated the demands of movements to a surprising extent, even as both have grappled with fundamental and inevitable tensions between their respective roles and aims.
