The Rough Patch: Marriage and the Art of Living Together

The Rough Patch: Marriage and the Art of Living Together

"Anyone grappling with the bewilderment of midlife...will be at once provoked and comforted by this enormously wise book" (Dani Shapiro, New York Times bestselling author of Hourglass: Time, Memory, Marriage), from a psychologist who has worked for decades with people struggling to preserve and enhance their marriages and long-term relationships. People today are trying to make their marriages work over longer lives than ever before. But staying married isn't always easy. In the brilliant, transformative, and optimistic The Rough Patch, clinical psychologist Daphne de Marneffe explores the extraordinary pushes and pulls of midlife marriage, where our need to develop as individuals can crash headlong into the demands of our relationships. "A book of good intentions and helpful advice and a worthy manual for spouses" (Kirkus Reviews), The Rough Patch addresses common problems: money, alcohol and drugs, the stresses of parenthood, sex, extramarital affairs, lovesickness, health, aging, children leaving home, and dealing with elderly parents. Then, de Marneffe offers seasoned wisdom on these difficulties, explaining the psychological, emotional, and relational capacities we must cultivate to overcome them as individuals and as couples. Blending research, interviews, and clinical experience, de Marneffe dives deep into the workings of love and the structures of relationships. Intimate and always illuminating, The Rough Patch is an essential, compassionate resource for people trying to understand "where they are" on the continuum of marriage, giving them a chance to share in other people's stories and struggles. "De Marneffe writes with poetry, wit, and compassion about the necessity of struggle in the quest for true love. Anyone in any relationship at any stage of life could stand to learn from the wisdom in these pages" (Andrew Solomon, National Book Award-winning author of Far from the Tree).

Esteemed psychologist Daphne de Marneffe examines women's desire to care for children in an updated reissue of her "fascinating analysis that's a welcome addition to the dialogues about motherhood" (Publishers Weekly). If a century ago it was women's sexual desires that were unspeakable, today it is the female desire to mother that has become taboo. One hundred years of Freud and feminism have liberated women to acknowledge and explore their sexual selves, as well as their public and personal ambitions. What has remained inhibited is women's thinking about motherhood. Maternal Desire is the first book to treat women's desire to mother as a legitimate focus of intellectual inquiry and personal exploration. Shedding new light on old debates, Daphne de Marneffe provides an emotional road map for mothers who work and mothers who are at home. De Marneffe both explores the enjoyment and anxieties of motherhood and offers mothers in all situations valuable ways to think through their self-doubts and connect to their capacity for pleasure. Drawing on a rich tradition of writers, such as Simone de Beauvoir, Adrienne Rich, Carol Gilligan, and Susan Faludi, as well as her experience as a psychologist and mother of three, de Marneffe illuminates how we express our desire to care for children. By treating maternal desire as a central feature of women's identity--rather than as an inconvenient or slightly embarrassing detail--we can look with fresh insight at controversial issues, such as childcare, fertility, abortion, and the role of fathers. An "absorbing look at the enormous personal pleasure that women derive from mothering....Maternal Desire is a stirring book that celebrates women's love for their children and mothering while also supporting their interest in careers and other pursuits" (Booklist).

In Constructive Feminism, Daphne Spain examines the deliberate and unintended spatial consequences of feminism's second wave, a social movement dedicated to reconfiguring power relations between women and men. Placing the women's movement of the 1970s in the context of other social movements that have changed the use of urban space, Spain argues that reform feminists used the legal system to end the mandatory segregation of women and men in public institutions, while radical activists created small-scale places that gave women the confidence to claim their rights to the public sphere. Women's centers, bookstores, health clinics, and domestic violence shelters established feminist places for women's liberation in Boston, Los Angeles, and many other cities. Unable to afford their own buildings, radicals adapted existing structures to serve as women's centers that fostered autonomy, health clinics that promoted reproductive rights, bookstores that connected women to feminist thought, and domestic violence shelters that protected their bodily integrity. Legal equal opportunity reforms and daily practices of liberation enhanced women's choices in education and occupations. Once the majority of wives and mothers had joined the labor force, by the mid-1980s, new buildings began to emerge that substituted for the unpaid domestic tasks once performed in the home. Fast food franchises, childcare facilities, adult day centers, and hospices were among the inadvertent spatial consequences of the second wave.

Everyone has secrets. The goddess Athena has more than most Athena, beloved daughter of Zeus. Worshiped by millions as the goddess of Wisdom and War. What problems could she possibly have? Well... -Her mother was killed by Zeus to prevent an ancient prophesy from coming true; one that might be about Athena herself. -Athena is smart, gutsy and rebellious in an age that demands its females be gentle and submissive. -She eludes an arranged marriage only to find herself condemned to a lifetime of enforced virginity. So what is a goddess with a formidable intellect and a backbone of steel to do? She seizes control of her destiny, using her cunning to outwit the other gods and wins dominion over the greatest city in Greece. And when love finally strikes, Athena chooses to follow her heart without a backward glance. But the wheel continues to turn, and the golden age of ancient Greece is eventually threatened by a new military power growing in the west. When the Roman legions arrive, greedy for Greece's wealth and offering to adopt the Greek gods as their own, Athena and her fellow gods have a diabolical choice to make: Do they stand by the Greek people, or betray them to safeguard their own interests? In defiance of her father's wishes, Athena rebels one last time and sets forth to change the course of human history itself. Author Daphne Ignatius takes us behind the mythology and reveals a colorful version of one of the most powerful goddesses of the ancient world; one that is definitely not found in the textbooks *************************** "Creating a story about Athena is no small feat and the author created an unforgettable read." - Diana L, Amazon Top 500 Reviewer "Absolutely delightful and fresh. Ignatius's book is a pleasure to read. It's funny and playful and sincere." - Kameel Nasr, author of The World Up Close "The characters and the world she (the author) has created are great. Readers who love mythology will love this one." - A Creative Mind

"In this important book, Adler, a mathematician, management consultant, and self-proclaimed "numbers junkie," equips mothers with researched data behind recommendations for what to do (and not do) during pregnancy... She writes in a tone that is both authoritative and assuring-that of a mother rooting for all other mothers." -Publishers Weekly When Daphne Adler, a mother and mathematician, was pregnant, a colleague scolded her for sprinkling parmesan cheese on her pasta. After dutifully dumping her dinner in the trash, she decided to investigate to find out whether the admonishment and similar warnings were based on fact. What she discovered surprised her-and will surprise you, too. After 3 years of research where she poured over thousands of studies, Adler has reframed the parameters of what should and shouldn't be allowable during pregnancy. Her refreshing and reassuring book finally provides us with a way to separate myth from reality.Fact or fallacy? Debunking the Bump sets the record straight with eye-opening revelations such as: -44% of obstetricians never mention the most important avoidable cause of birth defects.-Less than half of all pregnant women are counseled about the most dangerous activity they could undertake while pregnant.-In the long list of forbidden foods, one category is 10,000 times more risky than others...but its danger is not emphasized.-Many pregnant women cut down their consumption of the single substance that's the most beneficial to their developing baby. Debunking the Bump is a pregnancy book for women with a thirst for facts. It covers not only all the hot pregnancy topics (Is it safe to eat sushi and drink coffee?) but also a variety of additional subjects Adler's exhaustive research uncovered that aren't even mentioned in most pregnancy books. Filled with practical, actionable recommendations and clear explanations of risks and trade-offs, this unique guide will help you make informed choices so you can enjoy a relaxed and happy pregnancy. Secondary Data in Mixed Methods Research by Daphne C. Watkins, the latest contribution to the Mixed Methods Research Series, offers unique and necessary instruction in this growing topic. With the increasing amount of secondary data available through journals and repositories, researchers have a trove of sources for new investigations at their fingertips, but few books to guide them. This brief text provides readers with a step-by-step procedure for incorporating secondary data into various mixed methods research designs, as well as identifying key characteristics of existing datasets that make them good candidates for mixed methods projects and giving ideas for new uses of secondary data. Introductory chapters help the reader understand the “what” and “why” of secondary data. Subsequent chapters address the use of secondary data in convergent, exploratory sequential, explanatory sequential, and other complex research designs. The final chapters delve into writing and reporting on projects before, during, and after the project. Quotes throughout the chapter help readers remember key bits of knowledge, while learning objectives and summaries in each chapter structure the reading experience. Application questions at the end of each chapter help readers recall information and apply it to their own research projects. By emphasizing how to use existing qualitative and quantitative datasets in mixed methods research, Secondary Data in Mixed Methods Research will help readers answer new and ongoing questions in social science research.

A church where everyone--adults, young people and children--has one vision and moves together. It almost sounds too good to be true. The vision which has inspired Daphne Kirk for over thirty years, and which she has actively sought to pass on to others, is of a church which includes all ages (children, young people and adults) in every aspect of its life. This is the vision of the intergenerational Church. Kirk writes with great energy and passion, presenting a radical picture of intergenerational cell life without glossing over the difficulties of initiating and sustaining that life.
Intergenerational Cell Resources: five series of meeting outlines for the intergenerational cell

Daphne Greenwood presents the first comprehensive introduction to pluralist labor economics. She expands the economics toolbox with theories taken from institutionalist, feminist, social, ecological, and stratification economists. Pluralists, she explains, focus on how formal and informal institutions affect the distribution of productivity dividends—and how this has evolved over time. Pluralists are concerned with job quality as well as financial compensation. They acknowledge the modern-day abundance created by technology, but advocate for institutional changes to direct it in equitable and sustainable ways. Building on the work of many heterodox economists, Greenwood introduces wage and employment models that are embedded in the economy, environment, and society. Beginning with evidence on work and pay in the US today, she explains why tools for analyzing commodity exchange are not sufficient for analyzing labor relationships. She brings bargaining power to the fore, analyses dynamic monopsony, and looks at the role of wealth as well as income in framing opportunities. Throughout the book, Greenwood addresses threats to sustainability and equity from unpaid social costs; institutional changes such as financialization and fissured workplaces; as well as race-ethnicity and gender. Among the possibilities explored for improving work and pay are sectoral bargaining, job guarantees, worker-owned cooperatives, and universal basic income. The first undergraduate-friendly book on its topic, Work, Pay and Sustainability is an important resource for students and scholars alike.

What if, sometimes, letting go isn't the right thing to do?This story begins at the end of a thing that hasn't ended, and travels in orbit in the space between then and not yet, circling questions unanswered and unasked, alternative endings and futures that never came to pass, looking for a place to land. It is the story of Anna and Jack and it's a love story, because all stories are, essentially, about love and the inexplicable things we do in its name and in its absence, in its pursuit and in its wake.
