The Roman eastern frontier stretched from the north-east shore of the Black Sea to the Red Sea. It faced Rome’s formidable foe, the kingdom of Parthia, and its successor, Sasanian Persia. Rome’s bulwark in antiquity was the area known as Syria or the Levant, roughly modern Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel and Palestine. To the south lay the Nabataean kingdom, annexed by Rome in 106 and formed into the province of Arabia. To the north, the Cappadocian frontier was laid out in one of the most inaccessible and remote parts of Eurasia facing extremes of climate and topography, amid a patchwork of client kingdoms. This hidden and fascinating frontier in Turkey, whose bases mostly lie under reservoirs, is the major omission from this volume and it is hoped that a more in-depth account might appear in due course. The Caucasian forts along the edge of the Black Sea are, however, part of this volume; this is perhaps Rome’s least known frontier archaeologically but the subject of a unique account by Arrian when governor of Cappadocia.

The Law of Personal Privacy

The Law of Personal Privacy

Sherborne David; Hugh Tomlinson; Mark Thomson

Hart Publishing
2017
nidottu
The laws protecting personal privacy in England and Wales have evolved over many years, and until quite recently were derived from diverse sources, including the law of confidence, copyright, trespass, the European Convention on Human Rights, and statutes such as the Protection from Harassment Act 1997, the Human Rights Act 1998, and the Data Protection Act 1998. Prior to the implementation of the Human Rights Act the traditional law of confidence had developed incrementally, and there was much confusion about whether the origin of the law lay in equity or in tort. The purpose of this book is to analyse the new law which has evolved rapidly since the passage of the Human Rights Act, applying a new methodology and language to the modern legal and media landscape. In particular the effect of the internet is considered in some detail, since it is now an enormously important means of instant communication, via websites and email. In addition there is detailed consideration to the issues and remedies concerning street photography and how far the claims for misuse of private information and harassment can be applied to “public areas”.The new methodology rests upon a claim for 'misuse of private information'; the new claim is significantly different from the law concerning commercial confidences, in its nature, scope and application and the various defences that may be available. It is therefore not the purpose of this book to analyse the traditional law of confidence, but to focus entirely upon the law concerning the misuse of private information. The authors, all highly experienced practitioners in the fields of human rights and media law, have between them appeared in many of the modern English cases on privacy.
The Stonehenge Landscape

The Stonehenge Landscape

Stonehenge is arguably the greatest prehistoric monument in western Europe; as a World Heritage Site it ranks in significance with such sites as the Acropolis of Athens, the Pyramids of Giza, Great Zimbabwe and Machu Picchu. Stonehenge sits at the heart of a landscape rich in other monuments and remains of the Neolithic period and Bronze Age that are also part of the World Heritage Site. Recent research by English Heritage’s landscape archaeologists within the Stonehenge World Heritage Site has led to the identification of previously unknown sites and, perhaps even more importantly, the re-interpretation of known sites, including Stonehenge itself. This work has been carried out alongside recent and on-going independent research initiatives conducted by a number of academic institutions, involving international co-operation. This book presents the most significant findings of the English Heritage research and shows how it integrates with the results of work undertaken by colleagues in other research bodies. It traces human influence on the landscape from prehistoric times to the very recent past and presents an up-to-date synthesis of the results of recent fieldwork. It will be of value to anyone interested in Stonehenge itself, in megalithic monuments, in the Neolithic period and Bronze Age of Europe and in the historic evolution of chalkland landscapes.

Teaching Social Work Practice is a lively, practical guide to developing your knowledge and skills as a teacher of social work practice in an agency setting. Social work students learn to practise in college and agency settings, and this book will help to integrate the student’s experience of learning. Teaching social work is different from practising social work, and this book is designed to help practitioners to develop their teaching abilities with students. The author uses a combination of exercises, activities, notes and further reading to guide and encourage the reader through seven ’modules’, which include Anti-oppressive practice teaching, Models of adult learning, and Methods of practice teaching. Each module is designed to help you learn how to teach social work practice. There is an emphasis on self-directed learning and active teaching. The book also gives advice on collecting evidence of your developing abilities, and examples of how to demonstrate this in a portfolio. This is especially useful to people who are studying for the Practice Teaching Award. Finally, Teaching Social Work Practice provides useful digests of the relevant literature in the area of practice teaching and learning - helpful pointers for busy practitioners. Teaching Social Work Practice will be of interest to social workers who are considering practice teaching as well as those existing practice teachers who want to continue to develop their skills. College-based teachers and trainers will also find useful material. In addition, the book has much to offer social work managers who wish to develop their skills in staff and supervision and staff-development.

Numerical Range of Holomorphic Mappings and Applications

Numerical Range of Holomorphic Mappings and Applications

Mark Elin; Simeon Reich; David Shoikhet

Springer Nature Switzerland AG
2019
sidottu
This book describes recent developments as well as some classical results regarding holomorphic mappings. The book starts with a brief survey of the theory of semigroups of linear operators including the Hille-Yosida and the Lumer-Phillips theorems. The numerical range and the spectrum of closed densely defined linear operators are then discussed in more detail and an overview of ergodic theory is presented. The analytic extension of semigroups of linear operators is also discussed. The recent study of the numerical range of composition operators on the unit disk is mentioned. Then, the basic notions and facts in infinite dimensional holomorphy and hyperbolic geometry in Banach and Hilbert spaces are presented, L. A. Harris' theory of the numerical range of holomorphic mappings is generalized, and the main properties of the so-called quasi-dissipative mappings and their growth estimates are studied. In addition, geometric and quantitative analytic aspects of fixed point theory are discussed. A special chapter is devoted to applications of the numerical range to diverse geometric and analytic problems.
