On Beyond Living

On Beyond Living

Doyle Richard

Stanford University Press
1997

What do biologists study when they study "life" today? Drawing on tools from rhetoric and poststructuralist theory, the author argues that the ascent of molecular biology, with its emphasis on molecules such as DNA rather than organisms, was enabled by crucial rhetorical "softwares." Metaphors such as the genetic "code" made possible a transformation of the very concept of life, a transformation that often casts organisms as information systems. With careful readings of key texts from the history of molecular biology—such as those of Erwin Schrödinger, George Gamow, Jacques Monod, and François Jacob—the author maps out the complex relations between the practices of rhetoric and the technoscientific triumphs they accompanied, triumphs that bolstered a "postvital" biology that increasingly elides and questions the boundary between organisms and machines. There have been many popular books, and a few academic ones, on the Human Genome Initiatives. On Beyond Living is a genealogy of these initiatives, a map of how we have come to equate human beings with "information." Melding contemporary theory with scientific discourse, it is certain to provoke discussion (and controversy) in the fields of cultural studies, theory, and science with its penetrating inquiries into the relations between rhetoric and technoscience.
Faulkner's County

Faulkner's County

The rich history behind Faulkner's imagined world Lafayette County, Mississippi, was the primary inspiration for what is arguably the most famous place in American fiction: William Faulkner's Yoknapatawpha County. Faulkner once explained that in his Yoknapatawpha stories he ""sublimated the actual into the apocryphal."" This history of Lafayette County reverses that notion, using Faulkner's rich fictional portrait of a place and its people to illuminate the past. From the arrival of Europeans in Chickasaw Indian territory in 1540 to Faulkner's death in 1962, Don Doyle chronicles more than four centuries of local history. He traces the building of a permanent community and plantation economy by white settlers, the lives of slaves in the region, the experiences of secession, Civil War, and Reconstruction, town life in Oxford, and the ""Revolt of the Rednecks"" Faulkner captured in his saga of the Snopes clan. Drawing on both history and literature, Doyle renders a rich and deeply researched portrait of Faulkner's home. ""Yoknapatawpha was a place of the imagination, invented by Faulkner as a vehicle for developing a coherent body of fiction,"" Doyle writes, ""but the raw materials from which he created this place and its people lay right at his front porch.
Sex Objects

Sex Objects

The declaration that a work of art is “about sex” is often announced to the public as a scandal after which there is nothing else to say about the work or the artist-controversy concludes a conversation when instead it should begin a new one. Moving beyond debates about pornography and censorship, Jennifer Doyle shows us that sex in art is as diverse as sex in everyday life: exciting, ordinary, emotional, traumatic, embarrassing, funny, even profoundly boring. Sex Objects examines the reception and frequent misunderstanding of highly sexualized images, words, and performances. In chapters on the “boring parts” of Moby-Dick, the scandals that dogged the painter Thomas Eakins, the role of women in Andy Warhol's Factory films, “bad sex” and Tracey Emin's crudely evocative line drawings, and L.A. artist Vaginal Davis's pornographic parodies of Vanessa Beecroft's performances, Sex Objects challenges simplistic readings of sexualized art and instead investigates what such works can tell us about the nature of desire. In Sex Objects, Doyle offers a creative and original exploration of how and where art and sex connect, arguing that to proclaim a piece of art “about sex” reveals surprisingly little about the work, the artist, or the spectator. Deftly interweaving anecdotal and personal writing with critical, feminist, and queer theory, she reimagines the relationship between sex and art in order to better understand how the two meet-and why it matters. Jennifer Doyle is associate professor of English at the University of California, Riverside. She is coeditor, with Jonathan Flatley and José Esteban Muñoz, of Pop Out: Queer Warhol.

Illustrated with more than a hundred photographs, this is the most detailed and comprehensive history to date of Berry College, located in northwest Georgia. Ranging from Berry’s modest beginnings in 1902 as a trade school for rural Appalachian youth to its present-day standing among the Southeast’s best liberal arts colleges, the book tells how Martha Berry’s founding vision—to educate the head, the heart, and the hands—evolved to meet the challenges of each new generation. The photographs, many of them rarely seen before, capture happenings at Berry over its first century: preparations for the world wars, visits by renowned benefactors, student protests, expansions of campus facilities, and diverse aspects of daily life in and out of the classroom.Parts of Berry’s history have achieved legendary status—the story, for example, of how Martha Berry was inspired to start a school after visiting with poor mountain children in her log cabin. Ouida Dickey and Doyle Mathis separate myth from fact as they address Berry’s traditions, controversies, and triumphs and relate important developments at Berry to wider events in Georgia and Appalachia. As Berry graduates and career-long members of its faculty and staff, Dickey and Mathis themselves are part of the Berry tradition. Their meticulous research draws on a rich trove of documents to reveal a story that surpasses many of the familiar and beloved tales connected to the school. Berry’s enviable standing—as a model for work-study colleges nationwide, as a place intimately tied to the cultural life of its region, as a choice recipient of philanthropy—makes this new book important to historians, scholars of higher education, and thousands of Berry students, faculty, and alumni.
Ath: Its Use and Meaning

Ath: Its Use and Meaning

My study is an investigation of the "tradition" of Greek poetry in two senses. First, words have meaning, and they are much better understood if this fact is firmly recognized and a given concept is seen in its historical development. Sophistry is a recurrent human temptation. Secondly, the body of poetry from Homer to Euripides forms an organic whole, not only because a Greek poet, in spite of the emergence of new poetic genres, always felt the impact of his predecessors, but also because, with the death of tragedy, something entirely new arose in Greek letters: philosophy and oratory. My decision to limit my investigation of ATH much by the realization that such an organic whole provided an adequate body of literature to delineate the boundaries of a serious investigation as by the fact that, with a rare exception (Herodotus I.32), ATH is a word not used in Greek prose.

When was the last time you felt a sense of hope in regard to the Middle East? When was the last time you even heard some good news about the Middle East? Missionary Tom Doyle, who travels extensively throughout this key region of the world, finds much cause for hope. In fact, he observes that a spiritual breakthrough has come to the Middle East. A new generation of believers, passionate for God in spite of great challenges, including persecution, provides reason for genuine hope. Breakthrough was written to tell their story. Doyle reports that in recent years amazing numbers of people in the Middle East--particularly Muslims but also individuals from Jewish or traditional Christian backgrounds--have come to Christ. While surveying how the Christian faith is blossoming in the Middle East, the heart of this book is its personal stories. You'll read about Hamsa, who drove a tank in Saddam Hussein's army during the first Gulf War. Since then Hamsa has become a Christian and today he is a pastor in Baghdad. Rachel grew up in Jerusalem as an Orthodox Jew. At a low point in her life she met some messianic believers. Though it has cost Rachel her relationship with her family, she has embraced Jesus in her own life. Rachel also exercises a fruitful gift of hospitality, inviting both Jews and Arabs into her home for dinner and fellowship nearly every evening. These stories and many more like them, will inform, inspire and challenge you to pray more effectively for the Muslim world in general and the Middle East in particular.

The Rise of US Military Legalism

The Rise of US Military Legalism

Doyle K. Hodges

TAYLOR FRANCIS LTD
2025
sidottu
This book introduces and explains the concept of military legalism, and analyzes its importance for US military decision-making. The book documents a change over the past 50 years in the way in which US military officers make decisions about using force, which it calls "military legalism". Rather than relying solely on professional military judgment and professional military ethics, officers are increasingly using legal norms and reasoning to justify their choices. This book explores how widespread this practice has become, explains why it has emerged, and examines some of its implications. Using historical cases from World War II through the opening days of Operation Iraqi Freedom, this book traces changes in the way in which civilian policymakers have governed US military decisions about the use of force, and how the military has responded to these changes. While military legalism is normatively neither good nor bad, legalistic reasoning has been used to justify morally deficient policies, and a reliance on legal reasoning may have unanticipated and unexamined effects on the norms of civil-military relations. This book will be of interest to students of law, military studies, ethics, and International Relations.
