Il termine wop e riferito a tutte le persone che a partire dal 1860 emigrarono in massa nei nuovi continenti con prevalenza del Nord America. Queste persone andavano incontro agli stessi pericoli e alle stesse tragedie dei disperati che oggi tentano di raggiungere l'Europa e altri continenti ove sognano di trovare condizioni di vita umana. Ma mentre gli emigranti di allora lasciavano i loro paesi per evitare di morire di fame e dovevano affrontare i rischi nell'attraversare l'Atlantico, gli emigranti di oggi quando partono hanno spesso gia seppellito alcuni parenti morti sotto i bombardamenti. Vivono con l'angoscia di apprendere da un momento all'altro che la stessa fine e toccata ad altri loro cari rimasti a bersaglio di raid fatti da chi li vuole aiutare a ogni ora del giorno. E tutto cio in aggiunta alle tante offese e al disprezzo che riservano loro i banditori da quattro soldi e i loro elettori ignoranti aizzati e sobillati da questi con le parole e i modi dei loro canovacci.

This book explores Erasmus's ethnic and gender prejudices. It does not in any way seek to undermine the esteem in which Erasmus is generally held, as a prince of the humanists; it is rather a consideration of common early modern prejudices. The book’s principal innovation is the use of Erasmus’s commentaries on thousands of Greek and Roman proverbs (his adagia) as a source for examining Erasmus’s worldview. Researchers have often considered the adages as not voicing or reflecting Erasmus’s views, and as such have chosen to ignore them. However, this book shows that Erasmus occasionally expresses his opinions through the adages, giving us an invaluable window into his worldview. Die Arbeit untersucht den Wandel des europaischen Pindarverstandnisses: Bereitet Erasmus der Wiederentdeckung des princeps lyricorum den Weg, so bildet Herder einen Hohepunkt der enthusiastischen Rezeption, die im 19. Jahrhundert rasch verebbt. Pindar dient als Paradigma heterogener Diskurse, angefangen von der Rhetorik, Theologie und Philosophie bis zur Etymologie, Ubersetzungstheorie, Kulturgeschichte, Poetologie und Geschichtsphilosophie. Diese unterschiedlichen Zugange werden exemplarisch vorgestellt: an Erasmus, den englischen Pindaricks, dem Berliner Rektor Damm und Winckelmann, den ersten Ubersetzungen ins Deutsche wie auch an Goethes Sturmlied und Herder. Dieser zieht die Summe seines Jahrhunderts und weist uber dessen Grenzen hinaus. Der Autor ist erster Preistrager des "Heidelberger Forderpreises fur klassisch-philologische Theoriebildung".
