Assessment and Intervention with Children and Adolescents Who Misuse Fire

Assessment and Intervention with Children and Adolescents Who Misuse Fire

David J. Kolko; Eric M. Vernberg

It's surprisingly common for children and adolescents to play with fire and to actually set fires. A single fire has the potential to cause a cascade of serious consequences to children, families, and their community, sometimes with devastating impact. Yet, there is limited practical information and evidence-based advice available to help programs and practitioners with children and adolescents who engage in this behavior. Assessment and Intervention with Children and Adolescents Who Misuse Fire presents practical guidelines to facilitate the clinical assessment and treatment of youth firesetting. Based on nearly four decades of research and intervention experience, the treatment is directed toward reducing any inappropriate involvement in fire or related activities in order to lower the risk for property damage, personal injury, and other adverse consequences associated with these behaviors. This evidence-based intervention provides clinicians with a comprehensive program for school-aged children, early adolescents, and adolescents, and the child and his/her caregiver(s) are both important participants in treatment. The modular approach allows for therapists to be flexible in deciding which topics to cover in order to best meet the needs of children and families. This treatment model encourages more appropriate and safe behaviors in both children/adolescents and their caregivers and provides skills likely to discourage fire involvement. In addition, the materials promote controlling exposure to incendiary materials and opportunities to use fire. The intervention is provided in a single volume, encompassing a practitioner guide, parent workbook, and child/adolescent workbook, including handouts for participating clients.
Confronting Cyber Risk

Confronting Cyber Risk

Gregory J. Falco; Eric Rosenbach

OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS INC

nidottu
An adaptive cyber risk management guide from MIT scientist and Johns Hopkins professor Gregory Falco and "Cyber Czar" Eric Rosenbach Cyberattacks continue to grow in number, intensity, and sophistication. While attackers persistently adapt, business leaders have suffered from employing the same cyber risk management strategies for decades. Organizations must learn how to move past temporary solutions and invest in long-term resiliency measures to thrive in the future cyber economy. Confronting Cyber Risk: An Embedded Endurance Strategy for Cybersecurity is a practical leadership guidebook outlining a new strategy for improving organizational cybersecurity and mitigating cyber risk. Veteran cybersecurity experts Falco and Rosenbach introduce the Embedded Endurance strategy as a systems-level approach to cyber risk management which addresses interdependent components of organizational risk and prepares organizations for the inevitability of cyber threats over the long-term. Using real world examples from SolarWinds to the Colonial Pipeline attack, the authors extend beyond hardware and software to provide a thoughtful ten-step process for organizations to address the simultaneous operational, reputational, and litigation risks common to cyberattacks. They conclude with helpful "cryptograms" from the future, in which business leaders are confronted with the next generation of cyber risk challenges. Clear and informative, Confronting Cyber Risk provides CEOs and cyber newcomers alike with concrete guidance on how to implement a cutting-edge strategy to mitigate an organization's overall risk to malicious cyberattacks in an evolving cyber risk landscape.

U.S. Export Controls and Economic Sanctions

This book is a must for those who deal with United States government export control and economic sanctions regulations. Written as a user's manual rather than an academic or historical treatise, it covers in considerable detail - but in language that is intelligible to non-lawyers as well as lawyers - the Commerce Department's controls on: exports of commercial; 'dual-use' (having both commercial and military utility) and low-level military items; the State Department's controls on higher-level military items; the Treasury Department's approximately thirty different economic sanctions programs; the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's controls on nuclear-related commodities; and the Energy Department's restrictions on assistance to foreign nuclear programs. Given the authors' decades of experience with these regulations, the book not only explains the legal rules but also offers advice - not necessarily reflected in the regulations themselves - about how to interpret the regulations and deal with the regulators.

Originally published in 1951, Social Choice and Individual Values introduced “Arrow’s Impossibility Theorem” and founded the field of social choice theory in economics and political science. This new edition, including a new foreword by Nobel laureate Eric Maskin, reintroduces Arrow’s seminal book to a new generation of students and researchers."Far beyond a classic, this small book unleashed the ongoing explosion of interest in social choice and voting theory. A half-century later, the book remains full of profound insight: its central message, ‘Arrow’s Theorem,’ has changed the way we think.”—Donald G. The Inequality of COVID-19

The Inequality of COVID-19

ELSEVIER SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY

The Inequality of COVID-19: Immediate Health Communication, Governance and Response in Four Indigenous Regions explores the use of information, communication technologies (ICTs) and longer-term guidelines, directives and general policy initiatives. The cases document implications of the failure of various governments to establish robust policies to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in a sample of advanced and low-income countries. Because the global institutions charged with managing the COVID-19 crisis did not work in harmony, the results have been devastating. The four Indigenous communities selected were the Navajo of the southwest United States, Siddi people in India, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples of Australia and the Maasai in East Africa. Although these are all diverse communities, spread across different continents, their base economic oppression and survival from colonial violence is a common denominator in hypothesizing the public health management outcomes. However, the research reveals that national leadership and other incoherent pandemic mitigation policies account for a significant amount of the devastation caused in these communities.

Chinese and Indian Strategic Behavior

George J. Gilboy; Eric Heginbotham

Cambridge University Press
2012
sidottu
This book offers an empirical comparison of Chinese and Indian international strategic behavior. It is the first study of its kind, filling an important gap in the literature on rising Indian and Chinese power and American interests in Asia. The book creates a framework for the systematic and objective assessment of Chinese and Indian strategic behavior in four areas: (1) strategic culture; (2) foreign policy and use of force; (3) military modernization (including defense spending, military doctrine and force modernization); and (4) economic strategies (including international trade and energy competition). The utility of democratic peace theory in predicting Chinese and Indian behavior is also examined. The findings challenge many assumptions underpinning Western expectations of China and India.

Novel Ecosystems

Novel Ecosystems

Richard J. Hobbs; Eric S. Higgs; Carol Hall

John Wiley Sons Inc
2013
sidottu
Land conversion, climate change and species invasions are contributing to the widespread emergence of novel ecosystems, which demand a shift in how we think about traditional approaches to conservation, restoration and environmental management. They are novel because they exist without historical precedents and are self-sustaining. Traditional approaches emphasizing native species and historical continuity are challenged by novel ecosystems that deliver critical ecosystems services or are simply immune to practical restorative efforts. Some fear that, by raising the issue of novel ecosystems, we are simply paving the way for a more laissez-faire attitude to conservation and restoration. Regardless of the range of views and perceptions about novel ecosystems, their existence is becoming ever more obvious and prevalent in today’s rapidly changing world. In this first comprehensive volume to look at the ecological, social, cultural, ethical and policy dimensions of novel ecosystems, the authors argue these altered systems are overdue for careful analysis and that we need to figure out how to intervene in them responsibly. This book brings together researchers from a range of disciplines together with practitioners and policy makers to explore the questions surrounding novel ecosystems. It includes chapters on key concepts and methodologies for deciding when and how to intervene in systems, as well as a rich collection of case studies and perspective pieces. It will be a valuable resource for researchers, managers and policy makers interested in the question of how humanity manages and restores ecosystems in a rapidly changing world.
