Full-Time Leaders/Part-Time Learners

Full-Time Leaders/Part-Time Learners

Joanne L. Erickson; Richard D. Howard; Kenneth W. Borland; Larry J. Baker

Rowman Littlefield Education
2004
nidottu
Over the past five to ten years the growing demand nationally for a "new breed" of educational leaders has resulted in new and restructured Educational Leadership programs. The students in many of these programs are part-time with substantial full-time job responsibilities in a leadership position. The traditional doctoral program design and student experience has not—indeed cannot—meet the needs of this population. Frequently the result is a frustrated student who leaves without completing the degree. This frustration is often born of an inability on the part of the institution and academic program to create a flexible set of learning experiences that meet both the student's professional goals and the institution's goals for academic excellence. The purpose of Full-Time Leaders/Part-Time Learners is to present a design for doctoral programs that recognizes the unique needs of the full-time leader/part-time learner with multiple priorities of a demanding leadership position and the equally demanding expectations of a doctoral program. Will be of interest to higher education faculty who serve doctoral students in leadership preparation programs.

Empirical research has clearly demonstrated that animal abuse in childhood is associated with family violence and violent behavior towards humans in general. Such abuse is accordingly of increasing interest within human services and the criminal justice system. This handbook will serve as an ideal resource for therapists in social work, psychology, psychiatry, and allied fields who work with children who have abused animals. It provides step-by-step guidance on how to assess, develop appropriate treatment plans for, and treat children who commit animal abuse, based on the AniCare model developed by the Animals and Society Institute. Exercises cover the identification and expression of feelings, the development of empathy, self-management skills, and working with parents. Careful consideration is also paid to the effects of witnessing animal abuse. The theoretical framework is eclectic, encompassing cognitive behavioral, psychodynamic, and attachment theories. A number of illustrative case studies are included, along with excerpts from treatment sessions. Accompanying electronic supplementary material demonstrates role-played assessment and treatment and includes workshop presentations of pedagogic material.

The Fetal and Neonatal Pulmonary Circulation

The Fetal and Neonatal Pulmonary Circulation

E. Kenneth Weir; Stephen L. Archer; John T. Reeves

Blackwell Futura
2000
sidottu
Birth is a sudden, traumatic transition of environments. Once the placental oxygen supply ceases, the foetus has only minutes to establish pulmonary oxygen transport, which requires not only inflation of the lungs, but also sudden and sustained changes in the lung circulation. Not long ago, research in this field was largely restricted to morphology and physiology. Now the powerful new tools of cellular and molecular biology have begun to shed light on the physiological processes in the developing lung and its supporting vasculature. In 22 chapters, three main sections explore lung growth and development, vascular cell growth and differentiation, and the mechanisms of hemodynamic control in the neonate; extensive illustrations give a comprehensive picture of pulmonary circulatory development. Factors controlling vasculogenesis and angiogenesis are described by the scientists who pioneered the field. Similarly, the intracellular signaling cascades that determine proliferation or growth inhibition of fibroblasts, smooth muscle cells, and endothelial cells are also presented in an understandable manner. Finally, the role of substances, such as nitric oxide and endothelin, that control the hemodynamics of the fetal and neonatal circulations are discussed in detail, particularly in relation to the changes occurring at birth. This book will inform basic scientists as well as the clinician and student, and should be of particular interest to pediatric cardiologists, pulmonary medicine physicians, and vascular biologists.
The Neighbor

The Neighbor

In "The Neighbor", three of the most significant intellectuals working in psychoanalysis and critical theory collaborate to show how the problem of neighbor love opens questions that are fundamental to ethical inquiry and suggest a new theological configuration of political theory. Their three extended essays explore today's central historical problem: the persistence of the theological in the political. In "Toward a Political Theology of the Neighbor," Kenneth Reinhard supplements Carl Schmitt's political theology of the enemy and friend with a political theology of the neighbor based in psychoanalysis. In "Miracles Happen," Eric L. Santner extends the book's exploration of neighbor love through a bracing reassessment of Benjamin and Rosenzweig. And in an impassioned plea for ethical violence, Slavoj Zizek's "Neighbors and Other Monsters" reconsiders the idea of excess to rehabilitate a positive sense of the inhuman and challenge the influence of Levinas on contemporary ethical thought. A rich and suggestive account of the interplay between love and hate, self and other, personal and political, "The Neighbor" has proven to be a touchstone across the humanities and a crucial text for understanding the persistence of political theology in secular modernity. This new edition contains a new preface by the authors.
