Cognitive Radio for Dynamic Spectrum Access gives a comprehensive overview of the main concepts behind radio spectrum regulation, dynamic spectrum access and cognitive radio. Spectrum measurements are introduced to illustrate the inefficiencies in today’s spectrum usage and the book also discusses enablers for horizontal and vertical spectrum sharing. Among others a game-theory-based approach for spectrum sharing is described and evaluated. Institution and standardisation approaches in academic research and industry are highlighted including IEEE SCC41, 802.11k/n/s/y and 802.22 which lead towards commercial exploitation of cognitive radio. In conclusion, this book looks at the initial steps towards the vision of true cognitive radio and the potential impact on telecommunication business. Supply Network Strategies deals with how companies activate relationships with suppliers in order to become more efficient and innovative. In recent years, increasing emphasis has been placed on the ways in which these relationships link companies in supply chains and networks. In this substantially revised, new edition, the authors examine the supply side of companies from a network perspective. The IMP (Industrial Purchasing and Marketing) Group of researchers includes leading international experts in the fields of industrial / business marketing and purchasing. This group is very influential and many university courses have been developed based on the ‘philosophy’ of the IMP group.
Alternative Beta Strategies and Hedge Fund Replication

Alternative Beta Strategies and Hedge Fund Replication

Lars Jaeger; Jeffrey Pease

John Wiley Sons Inc
2008
sidottu
There s a buzzword that has quickly captured the imagination of product providers and investors alike: "hedge fund replication". In the broadest sense, replicating hedge fund strategies means replicating their return sources and corresponding risk exposures. However, there still lacks a coherent picture on what hedge fund replication means in practice, what its premises are, how to distinguish di erent approaches, and where this can lead us to. Serving as a handbook for replicating the returns of hedge funds at considerably lower cost, Alternative Beta Strategies and Hedge Fund Replication provides a unique focus on replication, explaining along the way the return sources of hedge funds, and their systematic risks, that make replication possible. It explains the background to the new discussion on hedge fund replication and how to derive the returns of many hedge fund strategies at much lower cost, it differentiates the various underlying approaches and explains how hedge fund replication can improve your own investment process into hedge funds. Written by the well known Hedge Fund expert and author Lars Jaeger, the book is divided into three sections: Hedge Fund Background, Return Sources, and Replication Techniques. Section one provides a short course in what hedge funds actually are and how they operate, arming the reader with the background knowledge required for the rest of the book. Section two illuminates the sources from which hedge funds derive their returns and shows that the majority of hedge fund returns derive from systematic risk exposure rather than manager "Alpha". Section three presents various approaches to replicating hedge fund returns by presenting the first and second generation of hedge fund replication products, points out the pitfalls and strengths of the various approaches and illustrates the mathematical concepts that underlie them. With hedge fund replication going mainstream, this book provides clear guidance on the topic to maximise returns.

Marketing Strategies for the New Economy

Marketing Strategies for the New Economy

Lars Tvede; Peter Ohnemus

John Wiley Sons Inc
2001
sidottu
Two men meet a big bear in the forest. One of them sits down to put on his running shoes. The other looks at him and says, ‘It’s no use. You can’t outrun a bear anyway.’ The first one answers, ‘I don’t have to outrun the bear. I just have to outrun you.’ Speed against competitors is just one of the key lessons outlined in this new book from Lars Tvede and Peter Ohnemus. E-business is here for good and people are waking up to the fact that traditional marketing techniques may not stand up to new requirements set out by the ‘new economy’. The question is, ‘which of the traditional techniques still work, and which techniques need to be revamped?’ The authors outline marketing strategies that use traditional methods where appropriate but, where required, introduce new techniques. These techniques are part of a new, distinctive school of thought in marketing — the ‘Digital School of Marketing’. Traditional marketing schools, for example, have observed the importance of moving fast — in the Digital School ‘fast’ is not just important, it’s crucial: It took Microsoft 10 years to reach 100 million dollars in revenue, AOL spent nine years, Yahoo! spent five years, Onsale four, Amazon three, and Priceline spent just one and a half years reaching the same amount. Speed is just one of the key lessons to learn from this book. Whether you are an entrepreneur out there on your own or a marketer in a large company, read on to discover how you can temper your marketing strategies to bring them in line with what is required today. Enjoy the race!
Before Motown

When most people think of Detroit and music, they think of the Motown sound. But what many people forget is that Detroit has a remarkable jazz history, which became a major influence in what came to be known as the Motown sound. Before Motown is the first book about the history of jazz in Detroit. It shows the significant impact Detroit has had on the development of jazz in America, with its own sound, distinct from that of the other jazz centers of Chicago, New Orleans, St. Louis, or Kansas City. Starting with the big bands in the 1920s,with groups like the McKinney's Cotton Pickers and Jean Goldkette's Orchestra, and continuing into the 1950s, Detroit experienced a golden age of modern jazz centered around clubs like the Blue Bird Inn. That jazz scene comes alive in interviews with musicians and club owners, combined with unique period photographs and advertisements. In addition, Detroit's vital jazz scene is placed in its social context, particularly within the changing relations between blacks and whites at the time.Long overdue, Before Motown tells the story of Detroit jazz as it really happened, told by the people who lived it. More importantly, it shows how life can mirror art in the most pragmatic of American cities, Detroit.Lars Bjorn is Professor of Sociology, University of Michigan, Dearborn, and the author of numerous articles and publications about jazz. Jim Gallert is Vice President of the Jazz Alliance of Michigan and a veteran jazz broadcaster. He has been involved with the Detroit jazz scene for over twenty-five years.
Politics, Markets, and Grand Strategy

Politics, Markets, and Grand Strategy

Lars S. Skalnes

Why do states sometimes discriminate in favor of certain states and at other times choose to pursue nondiscriminatory policies? In answering these questions, Lars S. Skålnes stresses the international political importance of foreign economic policy, arguing that trade, foreign investment, and foreign aid policies are strategic instruments great powers use to manage political and military relations with allies and adversaries.Skålnes explains changes in foreign economic policy in terms of shifting strategic assessments regarding the importance of military support from allies. When states need military support from their allies to meet threats to their security, they will adopt discriminatory foreign economic policies in an attempt to strengthen alliance relations. When states can go it alone without military support, by contrast, they will not pursue foreign economic policies that discriminate in favor of either allies or other countries. Discriminatory policies, Skalnes argues, are important strategic instruments for several reasons. First, they can be used to tie countries to a military alliance. Second, they are useful as signals of intention. Third, discriminatory policies may strengthen an ally militarily by increasing the economic resources available for military purposes.Skålnes provides detailed accounts of the grand strategies of Germany (1879-1914), France (1887-1914), Great Britain (1919-1939), and the United States (1945-1967).Politics, Markets, and Grand Strategy will be important reading for scholars and students in the fields of national security studies, international political economy, and economic history, and to economists working on problems associated with foreign investment and trade generally and customs union theory and discriminatory trade agreements specifically.Lars S. Skålnes is Associate Professor of Political Science, University of Oregon.

The Socialist Response to Antisemitism in Imperial Germany

What set antisemites apart from anti-antisemites in Imperial Germany was not so much what they thought about 'the Jews', but what they thought should be done about them. Like most anti-antisemites, German Social Democrats felt that the antisemites had a point but took matters too far. In fact, Socialist anti-antisemitism often did not hinge on the antisemites' anti-Jewish orientation at all. Even when it did, the Socialists' arguments generally did more to consolidate than subvert generally accepted notions regarding 'the Jews'. By focusing on a broader set of perceptions accepted by both antisemites and anti-antisemites and drawing a variety of new sources into the debate, this study offers a startling reinterpretation of seemingly well-rehearsed issues, including the influence of Karl Marx's Zur Judenfrage, and the positions of various leading Social Democrats (Franz Mehring, Eduard Bernstein, August Bebel, Wilhelm Liebknecht, Karl Kautsky, Rosa Luxemburg) and their peers.

Random Geometrically Graph Directed Self-Similar Multifractals
Multifractal theory was introduced by theoretical physicists in 1986. Since then, multifractals have increasingly been studied by mathematicians. This new work presents the latest research on random results on random multifractals and the physical thermodynamical interpretation of these results. As the amount of work in this area increases, Lars Olsen presents a unifying approach to current multifractal theory. Featuring high quality, original research material, this important new book fills a gap in the current literature available, providing a rigorous mathematical treatment of multifractal measures.

#1 INTERNATIONAL BEST SELLER - A serial killer is spinning a sinister web and Detectives Joona Linna and Saga Bauer are caught dead center. This pulse-pounding descent into the chilling world of The Spider is another shocking thriller in the Killer Instinct series. Three years ago, Detective Saga Bauer received an ominous postcard describing a gun and nine white bullets--one of which was intended for her partner, Detective Joona Linna. The sender alleged that Saga was the only person who could save him. But as time passed, the threat faded. Until now. A sack with a decomposing body has been found hanging from a tree in the forest. A milky white bullet casing turns up at the scene. When the body count begins to rise, the police realize that the killer is sending riddles, offering them the chance to stop the murders before they happen. But the police always seem to arrive a moment too late. As they begin to close in, the case becomes more and more tangled: someone is spinning a fiendishly intricate web, pulling Joona ever closer to a trap he may not be able to escape. The Spider is shocking and exhilarating in a way only Lars Kepler could accomplish.
