Saunders Mac Lane was an extraordinary mathematician, a dedicated teacher, and a good citizen who cared deeply about the values of science and education. His recollections bring to life a century of extraordinary accomplishments and tragedies that inspire and educate. Saunders Mac Lane's life covers nearly a century of mathematical developments. During the earlier part of the twentieth century, he participated in the exciting happenings in Göttingen---the Mecca of mathematics. He studied under David Hilbert, Hermann Weyl, and Paul Bernays and witnessed the collapse of a great tradition under the political pressure of a brutal dictatorship. Later, he contributed to the more abstract and general mathematical viewpoints developed in the twentieth century. Perhaps the most outstanding accomplishment during his long and extraordinary career was the development of the concept of categories, together with Samuel Eilenberg, and the creation of a theory that has broad applications in different areas of mathematics, in particular topology and foundations. He was also a keen observer and active participant in the social and political events. As a member and vice president of the National Academy of Science and an advisor to the Administration, he exerted considerable influence on science and education policies in the post-war period. Mac Lane's autobiography takes the reader on a journey through the most important milestones of the mathematical world in the twentieth century.

It includes 1) a reproduction of the original January 1960 factory 'Service Manual' (part number F.469/3R/2M) and 2) a reproduction of the original May 1953 illustrated 'Spare Parts List' (part number F.473). The total number of pages in this manual is 128. However, both the 'Service Manual' and the illustrated 'Parts List' have their own individual index and page numbers. Consequently, the 'Parts List' begins immediately after page 88 of the 'Service Manual'. We encourage you to exercise caution when purchasing technical publications for your Velocette as many of the reprints found on internet websites are from 'bedroom sellers' at enticingly low prices by individuals that really have no idea what they are selling. Many are nothing more than poor quality, comb-bound photocopies that are scanned and printed complete with greasy pages and thumbprints and, as such, are deceptively described as 'pre-owned', 'used' or even 'refurbished'. In addition, they are often advertised for the incorrect series and/or model years. Der eheliche Himmel h ngt allerdings etwas schief, als Franz auf Grund des straffen Ausflugsprogramms den Tag der Hochzeit vor bergehend vergisst. Da ist guter Rat erst mal "teuer" und auch der erwachsene Sohn im fernen Deutschland hat wenig sinnvolle L sungsvorschl ge vorzuweisen. Aber...Franz erz hlt und das wird auch den Leserinnen sehr gefallen, denn Franz ist ein liebenswerter Mittvierziger, er arbeitet beim Finanzamt und ist u erst bodenst ndig. Manches, was Hannah sagt, h rt er nicht oder versteht es falsch, er findet Socken nur, wenn sie vorne in der Schublade liegen, und er liebt seine Familie, samt Schweigermutter und Hund. Er leidet unter Flugangst und ist erst einmal wenig begeistert von Hannahs Idee nach USA zu reisen, zumal er bereits den n chsten Campingurlaub im S den plant. Einzig die Aussicht die Staaten in einem amerikanischen Wohnmobil zu durchqueren, kann ihm die Entscheidung schmackhaft machen und ein zustimmendes Nicken entlocken.
