A century ago the Symbolists in Moscow and St. Petersburg dreamed of a fundamental transformation of life in Russia. From their reading of signs in the heavens, these poets, philosophers, and mystics sensed that tsardom was on the threshold of an apocalyptic upheaval. They were influenced by Vladimir Solovyov and Friedrich Nietzsche, but under the impact of the 1905 Revolution they later also subscribed to current radical political ideas. The eventual collision between these dreams and tsarist reality generated enormous intellectual turbulence and the need for substitutes. Not least psychoanalysis came to the rescue of these stranded dreamers. The present collection of essays is intended for readers interested in Russian literature or the early history of Eastern European offshoots of psychoanalysis.
The academic career of Professor Magnus Ljunggren spans more than a half century. Here he looks back over his meetings with leading members of the Russian intelligentsia who, from the liberalizing Twenty-Second Party Congress, in 1961, to the present, have struggled with the totalitarian structures of Soviet and post-Soviet society. culture. His memoirs As a scholar, Ljunggren has focused on Andrei Bely’s prose, Russian Symbolism and Russian Silver Agereflect on how his study of Symbolism and his commitment to the Russian civil rights movement over the years have stimulated each other and contributed to a deeper understanding of Russia’s distinctive character. Ljunggren’s gallery of intimate and colorful portraits includes prominent cultural figures such as Bulat Okudzhava, Yevgeny Yevtushenko, Joseph Brodsky, Viktor Shklovsky, Lidia Chukovskaya, and Nina Berberova.
Since the Libya War in 2011 it has been widely suggested that NATO’s role in US security policy has diminished, because Washington gives Europe less and Asia more strategic priority (a tendency that is reinforced by budget restraints), and because the US is no longer interested in always leading NATO activities that mainly concern European conditions.Several experts have suggested that the US expect that the European security challenges primarily should be handled by NATO’s European allies in a new transatlantic burden sharing model, and that the US role should principally be Article V-focused. This book investigates to what extent these claims are valid, and what consequences they may have for European and international security.

The old philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900), now more than 100 years ago, prognotized that mankind would now and then enter into what is known as "Crazy Epochs" and, perhaps we are in such a one now? Aren't our times, rather peculiar, that first occurrence began in "The Disastrous 1970's" and we, shall be considering that time to be when the Nietzsche Crazy Period started "Big National Governments" came to dominate our national societies while, mighty "International Institutions" came to dominate our world. Nowadays, we can learn much from history. Citing the Old Biblian Prophet's saying from 3,000 years ago... "I have observed an error made in this world and it has its origin in the governments themselves... namely that the stupid and foolish ones receive high positions, all the while the people that really count, are given modest positions " - The Bible, The Preacher/Prophet, 10-5. We are, indeed on a dangerous course, although - as we will see in this book... now and lately, some vague signs are indicating "Our Crazy Epoch" is debilitating conservatism and somewhat recuperating, indeed But time can be running out and this so socialistic power might well continue - Our Crazy Epoch, could bring total disaster. On the other hand and as a very ironic consolation of all the craziness shown in this book, - let us take an old Swedish proverb: "You won't be a genius...until YOU are a little bit crazy " Thus, genius times might come...

Hell's influence on humans is more devious than you think. Laverne (a.k.a Dirk) is a manipulative, formerly not-so-successful heavy metal rocker in life who finds an opportunity to finally make it big in the Underworld -- a place filled with unexpectedly devious tortures that he would love to avoid as much as possible. The big stage Dirk finds himself on is the annual, soul-fueled reality show that helps secure Hell's hold on unsuspecting, holiday-time humans. Over the course of three holiday seasons, a modern Christmas Carol unfolds with the help of an incredible cast of demons and a motley crew of the damned. While Laverne is driven to win in order to keep the Devil and his demons at bay, the power of love and music lead him to take a bold step that truly turns him into a cosmic megastar. If you'd like to explore the strangest Underworld you've ever imagined and see how Black Friday became blacker than you ever knew, the secrets lie within.
The Social Life of Unsustainable Mass Consumption draws on a variety of theories and research to contribute to our understanding of unsustainable mass consumption. It addresses the role of identities, social relations, interactions, belonging, and status comparison, and how perceived time scarcity is both a cause and an effect of consumption. It examines the power of consumer norms and how overconsumption is normalized and shows how consumption is embedded in the time-space arrangements of everyday life. Magnus Boström contextualizes such drivers within the larger institutional and infrastructural forces underlying mass consumption, including the economy, growth politics, and the problematic promises of consumer culture. Boström further draws on lessons from lived experiments of consuming less and discuss how insights about the flaws of consumer culture can help shape a growing critique and countermovement – a collective detox from consumerism.
Experiencing Disability Stigma in Ghana: Impact on Individuals and Caregivers explores the roots of disability stigma and discrimination in Ghana as well as the social and economic impact of discrimination on individuals with disabilities and their caregivers. Magnus Mfoafo-M’Carthy, Jeff Grischow, and Festus Moasun present interviews from individuals with disabilities, and caregivers faced with the burdens of caring for their loved ones. The inclusion of caregivers is particularly important, because very few studies have presented their voices despite the burdens they face alongside individuals in their care. The interviews addressed the socio-economic consequences of disability and/or mental illness in Ghana for individuals and their caregivers, the implications these consequences have for the practice of social work in Ghana, and the public policy implications of this research. This book provides new and insightful data and analysis through rich and detailed firsthand narratives of lived experiences and offers recommendations for enhanced policy and practices to reduce stigma and improve the lives and livelihoods of Ghanaians with disabilities.
Owner-Level Taxes and Business Activity examines advances in both theoretical and empirical research that paint a clearer picture of the effects of owner-level taxation on business activity. Commonly used macroeconomic models tend to find that taxes at the owner level are "neutral" and have little or no effect on firm activity. However, the conclusion that ownership taxation has no effect on firm behaviour - and on entrepreneurship - is derived from models based on unrealistic simplifications. When complex and more realistic dimensions such as entrepreneurship and corporate governance are incorporated into these models, taxes can affect business activity through these channels. A key lesson from this monograph is that the models used in economics are necessarily simplified. Moreover, it is important for political decision makers to be conscious of these simplifications when the conclusions derived from economic models motivate or are used to justify tax policy decisions. Conclusions from overly simplified models - such as the model that concludes that dividend taxes do not influence firm behaviour - may thus change when additional factors are considered.
In his book Magnus Nordenman sets out to explore the emerging competition between the United States and its allies in NATO and the resurgent Russian navy in the North Atlantic. The North Atlantic played a key role in the two world wars and the Cold War as the strategic link between the United States and Europe that allowed reinforcements and supplies to flow to embattled allies. Nordenman shows that while a conflict in Europe has never been won in the North Atlantic it surely has been lost there. However the North Atlantic fell away from attention as the Cold War ended the Russian navy fell into decay and the United States and its allies turned to counter-terrorism and expeditionary operations in the far corners of the earth. With Vladimir Putin's Russia threatening the peace in Europe since the annexation of Crimea in 2014 the North Atlantic and other maritime domains around Europe are once again coming into focus. But this battle will be different Nordenman shows due to an overstretched US Navy disruptive technologies a NATO that woke up to the Russian challenge while essentially unprepared for high-end warfighting in the maritime domain and a Russia that commands a far smaller but more sophisticated navy equipped with long-range cruise missiles that have already been used in operations in Syria. Nordenman concludes that the new contest in the North Atlantic will not be about keeping the sea lanes open or facing down a Russian anti-shipping campaign in the vast expanses of the ocean. Instead the Russian threat comes from submarines operating in the far North Atlantic where they can strike at targets across Europe using long-range cruise missiles.Nordenman's book describes the evolution of warfare in the North Atlantic in the 20th century and points to the enduring strategic factors and dynamics in that maritime domain that must be kept in mind as the United States and NATO devises new strategies for defense and deterrence in the North Atlantic. He also highlights how the strategic and operational environment has changed since the end of the Cold War with the coming of new technologies new players in the North Atlantic and the new Russian way of war in the maritime domain. He concludes with a set of recommendations for the United States and its NATO allies on how to build an effective approach to ensuring that the North Atlantic remains an open bridge between North America and Europe in both peace and war.

In 1948, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea is founded by General Kim Il-sung.In 1978, North Korea celebrates the thirtieth anniversary of its founding, and Kim Jong-il, who at the time is the head of the Propaganda and Agitation Department, orders the kidnapping of the greatest South Korean movie star, the actress Madame Choi, and her ex-husband, the famous film director Shin Sang-ok.In 2008, North Korea celebrates its sixtieth anniversary, and Magnus Bärtås and Fredrik Ekman take a bizarre, heavily guided tour to the world’s most isolated country. In All Monster Must Die, authors Magnus Bärtås and Fredrik Ekman weave together these three stories to create a mosaic of North Korea, past and present: from the Japanese occupation to the demarcation of the border at the 38th parallel and the Korean War, the development of North Korean Juche ideology, the establishment of the Kim dynasty’s cult of personality, and the aggressive manufacturing of political propaganda, which motivated the kidnapping of South Korea’s most famous film couple. Intelligent and shocking, this book offers a rare and fascinating window into the “hermit kingdom,” and includes an updated chapter on the passing of Kim Jong-il and the declaration of his son, Kim Jong-un, as supreme leader.
