Setting a goal to read and study the whole Bible, let alone the New Testament by its self, may seem daunting and an impossible challenge. Starting with the Gospels is one of the best ways to begin a study of the Bible and starting with the words of Jesus makes the challenge an even more exciting. After all, because of the fact that He is the Son of God, wouldn't studying his words, be the best way to start? For centuries, the Gospel of Jesus Christ has been preached throughout the world. His teachings have been taught in nearly every language, dialect and nation, astonishing the wise and humbling the proud. Christ's teachings focused on love: "Love one another as I have loved you" and "Do unto others as you would have them do to you". When Jesus was asked which of the Ten Commandments is the greatest commandment, He replies, "You will love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with your entire mind; this is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it, you will love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets". While reading His words, let us focus on what He says. Do we truly live as He taught? Do we follow in His footsteps? The word "Christian" means "Follower of Christ". Let's learn what He taught us and then follow what He said. The world is watching us; it was once said by Mahatma Gandhi that if India would ever truly become a Christian nation, it would be because of the Christ of the Christians and not because of the Christians of the Christ. Christians today have not left the greatest impression on the world. Let's be true followers of Christ and live by His words. Only then will the world know what a Christian truly is. As the song says, "They will know we are Christians by our love." Read carefully His words and then study the context in which He was speaking. Review the questions carefully and answer them as honestly as you can. Enjoy your study of Christ's words.

Matthew's Community

Matthew's Community

Stephenson Brooks

Bloomsbury Academic

sidottu
In this careful study, the unparalleled sayings in Matthew (the 'M' sayings) are investigated as a source of evidence for a reconstruction of the history of the community in which the various traditions were preserved. Using a wide range of criteria, Dr Brooks isolates fourteen 'M' sayings from major concentrations of unparalleled material in Matt. 5.17-6.18 and chs. 10 and 23, supplementing these with four additional sayings. The picture of the traditions that emerges provides the basis for a new hypothesis that reconstructs a three-stage history of the Matthean community, thereby accounting for the presence of some mutually exclusive traditions in the Gospel.
Matthew's Inclusive Story

Matthew's Inclusive Story

David B. Howell

Bloomsbury Academic

sidottu
Matthew has been described as an 'inclusive story', in which the experiences of the evangelist's post-Easter church are inscribed in the story of Jesus's earthly ministry. This book explores the inclusive nature of the Gospel by means of reader-response literary criticism. Some recent redaction studies of Matthew are reviewed from the perspective of reader-response criticism. Then, in an attempt to understand the interpretative moves readers make, Matthew's story, story-teller and audience are examined.
Matthew's Missionary Discourse

Matthew's Missionary Discourse

Dorothy Jean Weaver

Bloomsbury Academic
2015
sidottu
This book offers a distinctive solution to the interpretative difficulties surrounding Matthew's Missionary Discourse. While the discourse proper lies within a narrative framework designating the setting of its delivery, the outlined mission does not at all points agree with the designated setting. Weaver shifts attention from historical-critical to literary-critical concerns. Rather than focusing on the historical setting(s) of the disciples' mission(s), she analyses the role of Mt. 9.35-11.1 within its literary setting in the Gospel and assesses the impact of this text on the reader of the Gospel.
Matthew Arnold and English Education

Matthew Arnold and English Education

Poet and critic Matthew Arnold (1822-1888) was a prominent educator. One of Her Majesty's Inspectors of Elementary Schools for 35 years, he traveled abroad to report on foreign education. Though Arnold is recognized as an early proponent of comparative education, there has been little study of his work in the field. The author examines Arnold's writings and presents three related arguments--that England was well behind countries like France and Germany in "the civilization of her middle class"; that advances being made abroad were largely due to strong state education systems, and that it was essential for England to establish a system of post-elementary education modeled on foreign systems.

Abandoned on the streets of Philadelphia at age four, Matthew Saad Muhammad (1954-2014) survived orphanages, street gangs and prison to become one of the most exciting prizefighters of boxing's Golden Age of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Time and again he battled back from the brink of defeat to win against the best fighters of the era. His victory over Marvin Johnson for the WBC Light Heavyweight Championship was described by one veteran boxing writer as the only fight he covered where it seemed both fighters might die. He fought not just for wealth and fame but to discover his identity--he had no idea who he was, where came from or what happened to his parents. This book reveals the full story of "Miracle Matthew" and how he became one of Philadelphia's great ring legends.
