Did Muhammad use the sword to spread Islam across the Arabian Peninsula? In the Koran, Allah commands that there are to be no forced conversions to Islam. But the Koran also states that Muhammad spoke for Allah and must be obeyed. And over the centuries authoritative Muslim scholars have repeatedly written about a large number of incidents in which Muhammad offered non-Muslims, including entire Arab tribes, the stark choice of converting to Islam or being killed. Did Muhammad really make permissible what he knew Allah had made impermissible? In his fourth book about Islam Dr. Kirby investigates this question. He relies extensively on the translated writings of early authoritative Muslim scholars to take a historical approach to the examination of Muhammad and the early years of Islam. His conclusions may be surprising and troubling, but they are essential to understanding Islam. Dr. Kirby is the author of Letting Islam Be Islam: Separating Truth From Myth, a book that was reviewed in an Arabic language online publication of the Beirut Islamic University, Beirut, Lebanon. The reviewer noted that Letting Islam Be Islam "...provides a very deep understanding of the Koran and the Sunnah" and "is an excellent resource to guide you in understanding the enormous plethora of information about Islam" (Islamic Literature, Issue No. 73, 2013). This review was translated from the Arabic by Dr. Mark Christian, a native Arabic speaker.

Sunnah (pl. sunan) literally means way or practice. In Islamic terminology, it refers to any act performed, verbally encouraged or, to a lesser degree, sanctioned by the Messenger of Allah Ta'ala by being performed in his presence or knowledge and not meeting with his disapproval. Of equal if not greater importance are the characteristics that made up the personality of Muhammad PBUH, the concerns that impassioned him and the ideals that he strove for. The wisdom of the Messenger of Allah has, since the dawn of his mission, served to inspire, guide, enlighten and heal millions through the journey of life. And how could it not have been of him whose Maker has praised him thus: "And truly you stand on an exalted standard of character. " (68:4) Today, amongst the chaos and confusion of increasingly hectic lives, living in a world that replaces meaning with material value and purpose with temporal progress, far removed as we are from the time the blessed Messenger walked upon the earth, we need perhaps more than ever before to stop along the way and enrich ourselves with the teachings of truth and meaning of the Messenger of God, teachings in essence as timeless and as old as mankind itself: "Say: I am no new thing among messengers..." (46:9) The book in your hands is an anthology of some two hundred ahadith mostly of the second type of Sunnah referred to earlier, words of advice and teachings related to man and his relationship with his Maker, fellow human beings, and himself. Words of wisdom to mankind from one who was, after all his greatness and exalted stature, himself a man.

Ethics is the discipline concerned with what is morally good and bad, right and wrong. It occupies a remarkable position among the other disciplines because of its significant subject and high principle. The noble traits are the only means that achieves the high senses of humanity and perfection. The bad manners, on the other hand, deform man and line him up with beasts. Not only do moralities have influence on individuals, but also they creep into nations to reflect their modes of life and levels of development or retraction. Many historical events have proved that moral corruption has been the destructive axe that ruined civilizations. As a proof of the significance of morality is that Prophet Mohammed (s) considered morality as the aim of his Divine mission: He said: "I was appointed for prophethood so that I may accomplish moral perfection." This is the very purpose at which ethics aims through its regulations and standards that discipline the individuals' consciences, rectify their moralities, and guide to the reputable conduct and ideal behavior.

Fatima was the youngest daughter of Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, and his most beloved. He referred to her as being a part of himself. From a young age until his death she never left his side, learning everything she could from him, taking care of him and even protecting him from his enemies. This book summarizes her life for young readers. Many words can be used to describe Fatima; honorable, intelligent, beautiful, charitable, honest, loving, caring, yet none does justice to this unique character. She resembled her father in both looks and mannerisms and was said to be the person closest to him. Fatima dedicated her life to Islam and, together with her husband, Ali ibn Abi Talib, she was the perfect mother and teacher for her children who included Hasan and Husayn who continued the lineage of the blessed Prophet. Ranked alongside Khadija, Mary and Asiya as one of the four most important women in Islam, Fatima, who was promised a place in Paradise and who will be by her father's side on Judgment Day is an inspiration for all Muslims for all time. This book gives an insight into her life and character.

Jesus and Muhammad lived in different times and in different contexts. An absolute comparison of the careers of these two men is not a satisfactory method in understanding the similarities and differences between their teachings. This book approaches this topic from a different perspective. The time that Muhammad preached in Mecca is compared to the time Jesus spent preaching throughout Palestine. This improves the similarities in contexts between them and makes a comparison more valid. The number of similarities outweighs the number of differences when looking at the four books of the Gospel and the chapters of the Qur'an revealed in Mecca. On issues related to prayer, the Oneness of God, charity, the Hereafter and forgiveness the teachings in these two books are practically the same. A number of core theological issues surfaced in the Book of John do clash with Qur'anic teachings about the person of Jesus. These differences and the possible reasons for them are explored in this book. The conclusion of this book is that Muslims and Christians have more shared values and even theological similarities than differences. It is recommended that Muslims and Christians should spend more time understanding these commonalities.
Twenty-Two Cents: Muhammad Yunus and the Village Bank
A biography of 2006 Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus, who revolutionized global antipoverty efforts by developing the innovative economic concept of micro-lending.Now in paperback Growing up in Bangladesh, Muhammad Yunus witnessed extreme poverty all around and was determined to eradicate it. In 1976, as an Economics professor, Muhammad met a young craftswoman in the village of Jobra who needed to borrow five taka (twenty-two cents) to buy materials. No bank would lend such a small amount to an uneducated woman, so she was forced to borrow from corrupt lenders who charged an unfair interest rate, and left her without enough profit to buy food. Muhammad realized that what stood in the way of her financial security was just a few cents. Inspired, Muhammad founded Grameen Bank where people could borrow small amounts of money to start a job, and then pay back the bank without exorbitant interest charges. Over the next few years, Muhammad's compassion and determination changed the lives of millions of people by loaning the equivalent of more than ten billion US dollars in micro-credit. This has also served to advocate and empower the poor, especially women, who often have limited options. Twenty-two Cents is an inspiring story of economic innovation and a celebration of how one person-like one small loan-can make a positive difference in the lives of many.

Nicholas of Cusa (1401–1464), thinker, polymath, and cardinal, had a long-standing interest in Islam. To date, however, no work has satisfactorily dealt with his volatile attitude towards the Islamic faith and the Ottoman Turks. This book revisits Nicholas of Cusa’s attitude towards Islam, criticizing previous work that has overlooked Cusa’s involvement in preparations for a crusade, and the significance of Cusa’s polemical A Scrutiny of the Koran (Cribratio Alkorani) of 1461. The book also addresses the prevailing image of Cusa as a dove of peace and champion of interreligious dialogue, and suggests an alternative and more complex picture which takes account of Cusa’s crusading activities and his attitude towards Muslims and Jews. A significant new study, Nicolas of Cusa and Mohammed will appeal to students and scholars interested in the Renaissance, Humanism, church–state relations, the history of the crusades, and Nicholas of Cusa’s life and works. "Nathan Ron sets the record straight about Nicholas of Cusa as so-called pioneer of ‘inter-religious dialogue’ based on a close reading of the irenic Peace of Faith and the polemical Scrutiny of the Koran, together with his role in mounting a crusade for Pope Pius II." —Gerald Christianson, Professor Emeritus of Church History, United Lutheran Seminary, Gettysburg; Past President, American Cusanus Society "Nicholas of Cusa often is presented as a champion of interreligious dialogue. This book rightly brings to the fore Cusanus’ often harsh polemic against Islam and his role in Pius II’s crusade against the Turks." —Thomas Izbicki, Humanities librarian emeritus, Rutgers University
